Where the Saints stand in waiver claim priority after 2023 roster cuts

The Saints will have a great opportunity to claim players off the waiver wire. They’ll slot in at No. 10 out of the league’s 32 teams when roster cuts are processed:

Tuesday’s NFL roster cuts deadline is just half of the week’s business — the New Orleans Saints and every other team will have the opportunity to claim many of the players who were just let go around the league when the waiver wire updates on Wednesday. You can find the full list of waiver claim priority here.

This year’s change to go down to just one day of roster cuts means more than one thousand names will be on the list. But the Saints are in a good spot to find some help. The order for waiver claims is the same as the initial 2023 NFL draft order, without any trades; which means New Orleans is slotted in at No. 10 out of the 32 teams.

But teams rarely find big contributors on the waiver wire. It makes sense, seeing as all of the players available are inexperienced pros who were just let go by their previous team. Sometimes, though, they’ll find a diamond in the rough. Taysom Hill is the Saints’ most notable waiver claim in recent years, with fullback Adam Prentice in second-place, though they’ve also added players like wide receiver Austin Carr and linebacker Michael Mauti.

The Saints have also used the waiver wire as an opportunity to bring back their former players, plugging holes on the roster and quickly addressing needs. Some of the reunions over the years include defensive end Kasim Edebali, plus offensive tackles Bryce Harris and Derrick Kelly.

So will they claim anyone on Wednesday? We’ll just have to wait and see. It’s worth remembering that any pickups will need a corresponding roster move to open a spot, so that could lessen the appeal if the Saints are content with their depth chart as it stands. Additionally, only players with fewer than four years’ experience in the NFL will hit waivers. Everyone with four or more seasons behind them will become a free agent upon their release. Keep that in mind as roster moves roll in over the next few days.

Saints claim former Packers guard Chuck Filiaga off the waiver wire

The Saints were awarded former Packers guard Chuck Filiaga after claiming him on the waiver wire, reuniting Cesar Ruiz with one of his old teammates:

Wednesday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire reports that the New Orleans Saints were awarded former Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Chuck Filiaga after claiming him on the waiver wire — a move that reunites Cesar Ruiz with one of his old teammates.

Filiaga signed with Green Bay as a rookie free agent after the 2023 NFL draft, having transferred to Minnesota after beginning his college career at Michigan. He played both guard spots in Ann Arbor on either side of Ruiz, the Wolverines’ former center, but Minnesota started him at right guard for 13 games last season. Pro Football Focus credited Filiaga with allowing just 2 sacks on 682 snaps in pass protection while drawing 7 penalty flags on his 1,525 career reps at the college level.

The 25-year-old from Aledo, Texas enters a suddenly-crowded competition in New Orleans, but there are plenty of snaps to go around while starting left guard Andrus Peat continues to recover from a strained quadriceps muscle. Filiaga joins Tommy Kraemer and Koda Martin as recent additions to the depth chart at guard, along with Max Garcia (who is also pushing rookie center Alex Pihlstrom to back up Erik McCoy), Mark Evans II, Lewis Kidd, and Calvin Throckmorton. They’re all competing for one or two roster spots up for grabs behind Peat, Ruiz, and rookie fourth-round draft pick Nick Saldiveri.

Notre Dame in NFL: Former first round pick waived

Here’s hoping he finds a new football home soon.

Former Notre Dame star defensive lineman [autotag]Jerry Tillery[/autotag]’s time with the Los Angeles Chargers is done. The Chargers announced Thursday evening they had waived Tillery. He had missed practice this past week due to a personal matter according to our colleagues at Chargers Wire.  He had also been dealing with a back injury he suffered during a lifting session.

Tillery was selected by the Chargers 28th in the 2019 NFL draft. Until [autotag]Kyle Hamilton[/autotag] was selected by the Ravens this year, Tillery had been Notre Dame’s most recent first-round selection. In four seasons with the Chargers, Tillery recorded 10.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss and 106 total tackles.

Tillery turned 26 last month. Assuming his back isn’t a major issue, you would have to assume he’ll get another NFL opportunity. Here’s to good health and a fresh start soon for perhaps the biggest star on Notre Dame’s 2018 defense.

Sean Payton on Broncos’ roster building: ‘The hay is never in the barn’

Waiver wire claims can be an important part of building an NFL roster — it’s how Sean Payton landed Taysom Hill with the Saints in 2017.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has emphasized this offseason that the transactions never stop. Players are always competing not only against their teammates for a roster spot, but also against players on other teams who might become available.

“You guys know this better than anyone — the transactions continue here from now until training camp,” Payton said on May 25. “There may be a player of two that we are still looking to sign.”

Since those comments, the Broncos have signed kicker Elliott Fry, tight end Tommy Hudson and pass rusher Frank Clark (wide receiver Nick Williams was also signed and later cut).

The transactions could continue through training camp. Even after setting their initial 53-man roster in August, Denver will look to the waiver wire and consider picking up players cut by other teams.

“That final cut down from 90 [players] to 53 [players] — it happens on one night,” Payton said on June 15. “There’s a lot of work that’s done leading up to that. You’re watching film, and you have roughly over a day to look at who’s available. We tell our players all the time, ‘You’re not just competing with the depth chart in your room, you’re competing with your room on 31 other teams, as well.’

“We weren’t looking for Taysom Hill when we found him. We were looking at another receiver for a practice squad position. We kept watching the film. This was 11:30 at night. I finally call [Jeff] Ireland in and said, ‘Who is this No. 7?’ He tells me, ‘It’s Taysom Hill.’ I asked him to bring me all of his tape. A day later, we put a claim in, and we were awarded Taysom Hill. That doesn’t stop. The hay is never in the barn, relative to things like that.”

Hill went on to become a key, versatile player for Payton in New Orleans. Payton also claimed linebacker Michael Mauti off waivers in 2015 and he made 35 appearances in three seasons. After wide receiver Willie Snead was cut from the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad in 2014, the Saints signed him to their practice squad.

Snead later earned a promotion to the active roster and he totaled 149 receptions for 1,971 yards and seven touchdowns in three seasons in New Orleans.

Hill, Snead and Mauti were all cut by other teams before finding success with Payton. We’ll be tracking all of Denver’s roster moves on Broncos Wire this year as Payton seeks his next waiver-wire success story.

Colts claim C Dakoda Shepley off waivers from Cowboys

Colts claimed C Dakoda Shepley off waivers from the Cowboys.

The Indianapolis Colts claimed center Dakoda Shepley off the waiver wire from the Dallas Cowboys, the team announced Tuesday.

Because the playoffs are still going on, the waiver claim is deferred until Monday, Feb. 13. That is when the waiver period for the 2023 offseason officially begins. Teams can essentially make their claims, but they won’t be official until then.

Shepley, 28, appeared in four games with the Cowboys this season, logging a total of 14 offensive snaps. He’s appeared in 13 career games (no starts) since entering the league in 2018. He spent the 2019 season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL.

Check out the top waiver wire targets in Week 16 of fantasy football.

For many fantasy football leagues, the playoffs commenced in Week 15 and now the number of managers still competing for a title will shrink dramatically.

Navigating the waiver wire this week will be vital as managers try to capture a title over their leaguemates. Even though many of us are out of contention, it’s still important to at least pay attention to waiver wire additions at this time of the season because it could help when preparing for the 2023 campaign.

We’ll be taking a look at the top available players rostered in ESPN leagues, using the 75% rostered mark as the threshold. Texans waive RB Eno Benjamin, giving the Saints another shot at adding him

The Texans are waiving RB Eno Benjamin, giving the Saints another shot at adding him. They could use the help after losing RB Mark Ingram II:

Here’s another option for the too-thin New Orleans Saints running backs room. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Houston Texans are waiving running back Eno Benjamin on Tuesday, putting the former Arizona Cardinals backup on the waiver wire. And the Saints were one of four teams to submit waiver claims when Arizona let Benjamin go — Houston had highest priority, so that’s where he landed, though New Orleans was also in the mix along with the Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs.

The Saints are ahead of both of those teams in waiver priority this time, so they should have a good chance at landing Benjamin if they so choose. They’re currently fifth in waiver priority behind the Texans, Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, and Los Angeles Rams, none of whom submitted a waiver claim the last time Benjamin became available. So it’s very possible the Saints get their guy.

They should certainly be motivated after losing Mark Ingram II to a knee injury. Ingram’s year is likely done, leaving a motley crew of Alvin Kamara, Dwayne Washington, and David Johnson on the 53-man roster with Derrick Gore on the practice squad. Benjamin wasn’t able to carve out a role with the Texans behind rookie standout Dameon Pierce. He only saw a dozens snaps on offense in two games with Houston, totaling 3 carries to gain a single yard without catching a pass. Even with Kamara on top of the depth chart, he’d likely get more opportunities in New Orleans.

We’ll find out whether they made a move for Benjamin on Wednesday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire. Benjamin is a 23-year old third-year pro out of Arizona State who averaged 4.1 yards per carry with the Cardinals, catching 24 of his 33 targets for another 184 receiving yards this season. His best game this season came against the Saints back in Week 7 when Benjamin gained 92 rushing yards on 12 carries while catching 4 of his 5 targets for 21 receiving yards, scoring a 5-yard touchdown run to put the game away late in the fourth quarter.
