Rutgers basketball adds NCAA Tournament team to their non-conference schedule

Rutgers basketball has another non-conference opponent.

With the start of the 2023-2024 college basketball season drawing closer, excitement is building for Rutgers future. On Wednesday, their schedule got a little clearer as one non-conference opponent was revealed, one who played in the NCAA Tournament last year.

The Scarlet Knights will host Wagner, according to CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein.

While these two programs have only met a few times, Rutgers has dominated the all-time series. In ten games, Rutgers has gone 9-1 against Wagner and scored 776 points while allowing 649. During the 2024-2025 campaign, things won’t get any easier due to a talented Rutgers freshman class.

In the upcoming matchup, the Seahawks will be tasked with stopping A[autotag]ce Bailey[/autotag], [autotag]Dylan Harper[/autotag], and [autotag]Lathan Somerville[/autotag]. They are expected to provide Rutgers with a boost offensively and help turn the program around. During the 2023-2024 campaign, Rutgers went 8-4 in non-conference play.

Sources: Rutgers will host Wagner as part of its 2024-25 non-conference schedule.

Game is set for November 6th.

Although Wagner will have its hands full, they performed well in non-conference play last season. The Seahawks finished with a 10-7 record and won one game in the NCAA Tournament. Their championship run came to an end in the first round against North Carolina.

Dolphins bring in FCS LB for pre-draft visit

TFL expert could be a fit for Miami.

The Miami Dolphins seem to be pretty set on the edge with Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, Andrew Van Ginkel and Emmanuel Ogbah all on the roster for the 2023 season.

However, they’re still considering investing in the position with collegiate prospects who have entered the NFL draft in just over two weeks. According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the Dolphins recently hosted Wagner outside linebacker Titus Leo for a pre-draft visit.

In his 38 career games, Leo recorded 234 tackles (40 for a loss), 13 sacks and two forced fumbles.

At 6-foot-4, 243 pounds, the Shrine Bowl participant was named the Northeast Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year in both 2020 and 2021.

It’s unclear if Leo will be drafted in this year’s selection process, but Miami may consider using a Day 3 pick on him, but if they feel confident that they can sign him as an undrafted free agent after the fact, they may just do that.

Syracuse vs Wagner Game Preview

Why Wagner Will Win

The Seahawks might be having their share of issues, but they’re not screwing up.

Penalties aren’t an issue over the first three games, there hasn’t been a lost fumble, and the four interceptions are mostly because the offense has to keep throwing to try getting back in games.

Syracuse turned the ball over four times in the close win over Virginia, penalties have been a huge issue, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Syracuse Will Win

Syracuse should be able to put this away fast.

Wagner has defensive problems on third down, the offense doesn’t do much of anything right, and scoring has been like pulling teeth with just seven points in each of the last two games and just ten points in the second half so far this year.

Syracuse will use this to tune up with a BRUTAL slate coming up next – NC State, at Clemson, Notre Dame at Pitt, Florida State, at Wake Forest …

What’s Going To Happen

Get going, get the win, get the stars on the sidelines as soon as humanly possible.

The Orange won’t have to work too hard to get to 5-0, but they won’t do anything special after the first few drives.

The Seahawks will struggle to score against the Syracuse twos and threes – Rutgers beat them 66-7 a few weeks ago – and there won’t be any drama.

There are two weeks off before the ACC season kicks back in, so the Orange coaching staff will keep the main guys in for a half and coast from there.

Rutgers vs Wagner Game Preview

Why Wagner Will Win

The Seahawks were able to wing it around a little bit against Fordham. WR Naielm Simmons and QB Nick Kargman hooked up eight times for 162 yards and a score.

The defensive front is just good enough to get into the backfield on a regular basis, the stops against the ground game should be there early on, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Rutgers Will Win

If you ever wanted to see the Rutgers offense look like Alabama, here you go.

The Wagner defense might be active up front, and it might be able to come up with tackles for loss, but it also gives up lots and lots and lots of yards.

It got ripped to shreds in the 48-31 loss to Fordham last week.

The Rutgers running game that rumbled for over 200 yards in the 22-21 win over Boston College should do what it wants, and the defense that stuffed everything on the ground isn’t going to give up a thing.

It’s not going to help Wagner that …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Rutgers defense will force at least three takeaways to make this very, very ugly.

Wagner has lost 21 straight games going back to a win over LIU in late September of 2019, and things aren’t about to get a whole lot better.

The Rutgers defense will be a wall, the offense get the passing game going, and overall, the penalties and little mistakes that happened against Boston College will be worked on before keeping the winning going next week at Temple.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Wagner vs Bryant Game Preview, Northeast Conference Tournament Final

Why Wagner Will Win

You’re not going to get a whole lot from three out of the Seahawks, and this isn’t a great team on the boards – but it’s good enough on the defensive end. However, this team makes lots and lots of baskets and it’s great at defending the perimeter.

It’s not the high-scoring team around, but it’s ultra-efficient in the way it works around for the right shots. Averaging over 80 points per game over the last six outings, it’s great on the inside and terrific at coming up with steals for points.

All but forget about getting clean looks from three against this bunch – no only has hit 40% form three against it since mid-January.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Bryant Will Win

Wagner is 2-2 in the last four games with one of those defeats coming against your Bryant Bulldogs.

Bryant can play a little D, too.

The Bulldogs are the opposite of Wagner in offensive philosophy when it comes to how they shoot. They’ll take a whole lot of threes, they’ll take advantage of the misses to generate second chance points off the rebounds, and they’ll get to the line over and over and over again.

Now, they won’t make all those threes – they’re only hitting 31% from the outside – but again, that’s where the offensive rebounding comes in.

They’re 16-1 in their last 17 games, but the run started with …

Wagner vs Bryant: What’s Going To Happen

Bryant lost to Wagner in overtime early in January even though the Seahawks couldn’t buy a three. They couldn’t do anything from the outside in the rematch loss, and they’re not going to hit their threes in this, either.

The Wagner D will keep Bryant from going off, but the inability from three along with giving up a whole lot of free throws will send the Bulldogs to the tournament.
