Countdown to Vols’ football: 63 days until it is football time in Tennessee

Tennessee will kick off its 2024 football season in 63 days.

The Vols will open its campaign on Aug. 31 against Chattanooga at Neyland Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 12:45 p.m. EDT and SEC Network will televise the contest.

2024 will be the fourth season for Tennessee under head coach Josh Heupel. In his first three seasons, Heupel is 27-12 and guided the Vols to three bowl games.

The Vols finished 9-4 (4-4 SEC) last season.

Texas A&M (15-8, 6-4 SEC) defeated No. 6 Tennessee (17-6, 7-3 SEC), 85-69, Saturday at Reed Arena in College Station, Texas.

The Aggies led, 42-28, at halftime and never trailed in the contest.

Tennessee trailed by as many as 22 points in the second half.

Dalton Knecht totaled 22 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while Zakai Zeigler recorded 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals for Tennessee in 40 minutes.

Jahmai Mashack finished with eight points, five rebounds and one assist, for Tennessee, which recorded a .371 field goal percentage, converting 23-of-62 field goal attempts.

Tyrece Radford led Texas A&M with 27 points. He also recorded five rebounds and five assists. Wade Taylor IV totaled 25 points, seven assists and three rebounds for the Aggies.

Two former Vols competed in the group stage of the NBA in-season tournament Friday. Two former Vols did not play due to a coach’s decision.

Philadelphia defeated Atlanta, 126-116, at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

Tobias Harris started at forward for the 76ers. He recorded 29 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block in 38 minutes.

Jaden Springer also appeared in the contest for Philadelphia. He recorded eight points, three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal in 22 minutes.

Orlando defeated Chicago, 103-97, at United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Admiral Schofield did not play due to a coach’s decision for the Magic. Julian Phillips did not play for the Bulls due to a coach’s decision.
