Virginia at Notre Dame: Three things to know

  1. Virginia is coming off a 98-75 loss to No. 1 Gonzaga Saturday at a neutral site in Fort Worth, Texas. The Cavaliers, who were ranked No. 15 and were 7.5-point underdogs, fell behind 18-5 in the first 5-plus minutes, trailed 44-31 at halftime and never threatened in the second half. Virginia hadn’t allowed an opponent to shoot better than 40% from this field this season until Gonzaga shot 60.3%. Senior F Sam Hauser’s 12.8 points per game lead the Cavs in scoring, while senior F Jay Huff is the top rebounder with 6.2 rebounds per game and best shot-blocker with 2.7 blocks per game.
  2. Notre Dame takes the floor for the first time in a week. The Irish snapped a two-game skid with an 81-70 non-conference win against Bellarmine Dec. 23, but they failed to cover as 13.5-point favorites. Junior G Dane Goodwin led the way with a season-high 27 points and Notre Dame rebounded from back-to-back losses to Duke (Dec. 16) and Purdue (Dec. 19).
  3. Virginia has won the last four meetings vs. Notre Dame, including a 50-49 overtime victory at home in their last matchup (Feb. 11). The Irish covered the spread in four of the last five games in the series.

Virginia at Notre Dame: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Virginia 60, Notre Dame 52

Money line (ML)

PASS. Virginia will prevail, but the -250 price is not worth the risk.

Against the spread (ATS)

Back VIRGINIA -5.5 (-110). It might take free throws down the stretch to cover the spread, but that shouldn’t be a problem for the Cavaliers. They rank 8th in the country with an 80.9% free-throw percentage.

ATS records: Virginia 3-3 | Notre Dame 2-5

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 126.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Virginia has featured one of the stingiest defenses the past several years under head coach Tony Bennet. This season, the Cavs are allowing just 61.3 PPG. Toss out the Gonzaga game and the average drops to 54.0 PPG.

In the February matchup between these two ACC rivals, neither team scored in the final 2:04 of overtime. As a matter of fact, the two combined for just 5 points in OT. Look for the Cavs to display that type of defensive intensity, especially after recently allowing 98 points to Gonzaga.

O/U records: Virginia 3-3 | Notre Dame 4-3
