Phoebus High School three-peats with last-second, 86-yard touchdown

Phoebus completed its three-peat and undefeated season with an 86-yard touchdown in the final second to get the win over Salem.

Phoebus High School (Hampton, Va.) football, seeking to extend its winning streak to 35 games and win its third championship in a row, had its eyes on two possibilities for the final offensive play of the game: Go long or go to overtime.

With the score tied at 14 points apiece and overtime looming, senior wide receiver Keyontae Gray streaked out across the middle of the field and caught a deep pass from freshman quarterback Maurikus Banks around midfield. He slipped free of a defender and darted toward the end zone, asking for and picking up a key block along the way.

Only one second remained in the game; the 86-yard touchdown reception and ensuing field goal gave Phoebus a 21-14 lead over Salem (Va.) that would stick. The Phantoms, once again, are Class 4 champions.

“I told him all week in practice, ‘My last pass to you needs to be a touchdown,” Banks told the Virginian-Pilot.

He couldn’t have scripted it any better than this.

Banks started only three games after senior quarterback Adonis Stowers suffered an ankle injury, the Pilot reported. Banks completed 11 of his 17 pass attempts for 165 yards in this game.

According to the Pilot, Phoebus has won 10 championships in the last 22 years and is the first Virginia High School League team to win football state championships in three different classes.

On controversial play, Mount Vernon forces overtime against Lake Braddock in Virginia football game

Mount Vernon forced overtime in a Virginia football game with help from a play that might have been a forward handoff. Fair or foul?

Mount Vernon would not be denied in regulation of its game against Lake Braddock, but should it have been?

Mount Vernon was stopped as time expired, but a penalty led to an untimed down on the next play. On that next play, Mount Vernon was close to the goal line when the running back was stopped short. It appeared that the ball was either fumbled forward to another player, who recovered the ball in the end zone to score, or it was a forward handoff.

No player is supposed to be able to hand the ball off forward, per NFHS Rules. VHSL rules interpreter Tom Zimorski has not immediately responded to a comment regarding this play.

The touchdown and point after tied the game and sent it into overtime. However, Lake Braddock came out in overtime and scored on the first play. The team then sealed the 30-24 win with an interception on Mount Vernon’s next and final drive.

The Reese’s Senior Bowl announced Tuesday night that senior-captain, safety Jalen Elliott will participate in the 2020 Senior Bowl at the conclusion of this college football season.

Elliott has started all nine games this season and recorded 35 tackles along the way while also picking off a pass against New Mexico and Bowling Green, both.  He also intercepted four passes during Notre Dame’s 12-0 regular season in 2018.

The Lloyd C. Bird High School (Virginia) product was recruited as a three-star safety in the 2016 class and has appeared in all 47 Notre Dame games since stepping foot on campus for the first time as a student-athlete back in 2016.

He will undoubtedly be missed next year, although Kyle Hamilton’s start and Isaiah Pryor’s recent commitment makes you feel pretty good about where the safety position will be headed into 2020.
