Grading every ACC team’s week one performance

A letter grade for every ACC team’s week one performance

Week one of college football is in the books with Clemson’s 41-10 victory over Georgia Tech at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta Monday night.

It was a competitive game early until Clemson found their groove in the second half, and the offense got things going. Georgia Tech looked solid with what they had, giving the Tigers some trouble early with talented quarterback Jeff Sims making plays.

While Clemson and Georgia Tech may have been the last teams we saw on week one, the entire ACC was active this week, with some playing non-conference matchups and others playing in-conference.

How did the ACC fair? Which teams performed while others struggled? Here’s a look at my grade for every ACC team’s week one performance:

Week one results for all ACC teams

Week one results for all ACC football teams so far.

Week one is almost in the books for the ACC with just three more teams yet to get some action, with Clemson and Georgia Tech, who will face off in a Labor Day night matchup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and Florida State, who will be facing LSU.

Though Clemson and Georgia Tech faceoff in the last game of week one, the rest of the ACC got their season going with some teams fairing better than others. There were some surprise wins, losses, and close games that came down to the wire.

Some teams underperformed while others looked better than expected, it was a solid week for the ACC.

Here’s a look at how every ACC team that played fair in week one.

4 Sharp plays against the spread for college football’s Week 1 (or why to fade Ole Miss and Virginia)

No betting love for Lane Kiffin?

The second College Football Saturday has arrived and action is starting to heat up at sportsbooks around the country.

After a week of analyzing the lines, late money has started to pour in on the spread and there are quite a few notable departures from where the public is placing their confidence. These are the sharp bets, where the amount of money wagered on one side vastly outweighs the number of bets placed on the other.

Using data from Action Network, let’s take a look at where the sharps are putting their money down and see if we can tail them to victory.

Virginia Cavaliers Preview 2022

Well that was weird.

Bronco Mendenhall was one of those coaches who was able to take whatever he had and make something great happen, but after going to the ACC Championship and the Orange Bowl in 2009, the program went 11-11, pretty much forgot how to play defense last year, and lost its last four games in the midst of the greatest offensive season in team history.

Enter Tony Elliott, a first time head coach who was way overdue to get a shot after years as a key assistant in the Clemson machine. He’s young, he knows how to coach up running backs, he knows how to recruit, and like all first time head coaches who get a shot, he knows how to bring the energy.

This is an interesting team with funky parts. Everything is still in place from the nation’s second-best passing game, but running backs have to emerge, the offensive line is all but starting over, and the defense that has a slew of good tacklers and experience has to figure out how to get into the backfield, come up with stops, and … play defense.

Not discounting that it wasn’t all that long ago that Virginia went from 2012 to 2017 without a winning season, a bowl appearance has to be a given with this team and this schedule.

Also a given is fun. If all else fails, start throwing again, and throw some more. This turned into a must-watch team in 2021, and now it should be a must-watch team that starts winning more in 2022.

Where every ACC team landed in the first AP top-25 poll of the 2022 CFB season

See where every ACC team ranks ahead of the 2022 college football season.

We are near the start of the 2022 college football season, and it couldn’t come sooner.

As we approach the first games of the season, we now have the very first AP top-25 poll. Teams will have an idea of where they stand heading into their first week of competition with the opportunity to either rise to the top or fade into obscurity.

The ACC is well represented in this first AP poll, with five teams listed in the top-25. Clemson sits the highest among ACC teams as the only team ranked in the top ten.

Here’s how every ACC team ranked, or didn’t, in the Preseason AP Poll.

Noah Taylor projected as top-5 impact transfer in the ACC

UNC Football linebacker Noah Taylor was projected as a top-5 impact transfer in the ACC for this upcoming season.

With less than a month to go before the UNC football program kicks off its 2022 season, there are still a few question marks surrounding some of the position battles.

Most notably, there is a lot of production that the Tar Heels will try to replace on the defensive side of the ball.

UNC loses a lot of production from the linebacking core, including Jeremiah Gemmel who had at least 70 tackles in each of the past three seasons and Tomon Fox who had at least 7.0 sacks and 10 tackles for loss in each of the past three years.

The Tar Heels found production through the transfer portal this offseason with [autotag]Noah Taylor[/autotag]. The Virginia transfer heads to Chapel Hill as a veteran who has produced a lot in his career.

According to On3.com, Taylor is listed as one of the 10 most impactful transfers in the ACC.

“Noah Taylor was a three-year starter for Virginia and has legit big-play ability. He had 13 sacks, 30 tackles for loss, 16 quarterback hurries, three interceptions and 10 pass breakups at UVa. (Worth noting: Taylor had a career-high 12 tackles in a loss to the Tar Heels last season.) UNC was ninth in the ACC in sacks and tackles for loss in 2021, so Taylor’s addition is big. New defensive coordinator Gene Chizik should be expected to put Taylor’s big-play ability to good use.”

Taylor is projected as the No. 5 most impactful. While he won’t be able to do it all himself, Taylor has totaled 169 tackles in 35 games for his career. He also has 28.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, 10 pass deflections, three interceptions and two forced fumbles in his career.

Taylor was a huge factor on the Virginia defense and that should carry over to UNC. He has a very good ability to rush the ball and his versatility will give the Tar Heels a good playmaker at the linebacker and pass rushing position.

Odds to win the ACC in 2022, per Tipico Sportsbook

As the college football season approaches, it’s time to take a look at which teams have the best odds to win the ACC.

The start of the 2022 college football season is just under two months away, which means the time to place future bets on teams to win the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is upon us.

For the first time since 2014, there was a new ACC champion in the Pittsburgh Panthers last season after Clemson was crowned the king of the conference for the previous six years. Last year was also the first time since 2014 that the Tigers didn’t win the Atlantic Division, as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons ultimately secured that accomplishment.

While Clemson failed to return to Charlotte, North Carolina, last season to compete for the ACC title, the head coach Dabo Swinney and the Tigers return a loaded group of talent in 2022 that gives them the fourth-best odds to win the College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship this upcoming season.

Even with the fourth-best odds to win the CFP, winning the ACC won’t be an easy feat, and many teams will fight until the very end for the conference title.

With that being said, let’s look at each team’s odds of winning the 2022 ACC championship courtesy of Tipico Sportsbook. The teams are listed in Tipico’s order.

UGA football offers Virginia’s top 2024 recruit

The Georgia Bulldogs have extended a scholarship offer to Kristopher Jones, who is the top-ranked class of 2024 recruit in Virginia.

The Georgia Bulldogs have extended a scholarship offer to Kristopher Jones, who is the top-ranked class of 2024 recruit in Virginia. Jones plays linebacker for Mountain View High School in Stafford, Virginia, which is outside of Washington D.C.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound linebacker is a rising junior and has a 3.5 GPA, per his Twitter account. Jones already has scholarship offers from some of the better college football programs across the country like Tennessee, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Boston College, and more.

Jones visited Georgia on June 2 and received a scholarship offer from the defending national champions.

Kristopher Jones is rated as the No. 109 recruit in his class and the ninth-ranked linebacker. As a sophomore at Mountain View, Jones showed a propensity for disrupting the opposing quarterback. He frequently lined up at outside linebacker and finished the 2022 season with 10 sacks.

Jones is capable of getting off blocks and displayed speed, acceleration, and quickness during an interception return for a touchdown last season. The elite linebacker also put in some work and made impact plays on special teams. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart loves players who can contribute as a special teams player.

The four-star linebacker announced his scholarship offer from Georgia via Twitter:

Virginia Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cavaliers miss from the Atlantic Division?

There are worse fates than to get Louisville and Syracuse from the Atlantic.

Neither game will be a layup – especially with the Syracuse game on a Friday night in the dome – but there’s no Clemson, NC State, or Wake Forest to face. The Cavaliers also miss Boston College and Florida State.

In the Coastal, the rivalry date with Virginia Tech is on the road, but Pitt, Miami, and North Carolina all have to come to Scott.

Virginia Football Schedule What To Know: It’s an easier slate than it seems, but …

The key will be to survive the first half on the road.

Richmond, at Illinois, and Old Dominion is a nice way to start the Tony Elliott era, and Coastal Carolina has to come to Charlottesville.

There’s a run of four road games in six games after kicking things off against Richmond, but Syracuse, Duke, and Georgia Tech are all manageable and winnable. Get by that, and there’s a beautiful run of four straight home games including bang-bang-bang against the top Coastal Teams – Miami, North Carolina, and Pitt – before closing out with Coastal Carolina and at Virginia Tech.

Virginia Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s a fun schedule.

It’s not all that bad and it should be light enough to get to a bowl game without too much of a problem. The toughest road game by far is at Virginia Tech to close things out.

There isn’t one road against a team that went bowling last year. Take care of home, and everything else should be fine.
