The Cavaliers topped Boston College on the road last time out Wednesday, winning 72-68 as 1-point favorites as the Over (126) cashed. It snapped a 2-game skid and an 0-4 against-the-spread (ATS) nosedive. The Over also halted a 3-game run to the Under.

This is the 1st time these teams have met at Cameron since Feb. 7, 2022, a 69-68 win by UVA as an 11-point underdog as the Over (128.5) cashed. The Hoos have been a thorn in the side of the Dukies. They’ve gone 2-2 straight up and 3-1 ATS in the past 4 trips to Durham and 6-3 ATS in the past 9 in the series.

The Blue Devils recovered from that ugly 83-79 loss at Wake Forest where the Deacs fans stormed the court and C Kyle Filipowski was involved in a post-game shoving incident and apparent injury. He played against Louisville Wednesday, and Duke took out its aggression on the poor Cardinals in an 84-59 win and cover as a 20.5-point favorite.

Duke enters 6-1 ATS in the past 7 games, while the Under is 6-1 in the span. The lone non-cover and Over result was against Wake Forest in the upset loss.

Duke (-490) will cost you nearly 5 times your potential return, and that’s quite risky considering how tough Virginia (+365) has played it, especially at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

This figures to be a defensive grind all day long, and Duke will do well just to get the victory outright against the offensively-challenged, but defensively-gifted Hoos.

Against the spread

VIRGINIA +9.5 (-114) always seems to play its best when it sees Duke -9.5 (-106) on the floor. The Cavaliers have cashed in 6 of the past 9 meetings in this series while going 3-1 ATS in the past 4 trips to Durham in front of the Cameron Crazies.

While UVA is just 1-4 ATS in the past 5 outings, it is a respectable 7-5-1 ATS across the previous 13. In addition, it is 5-1 ATS in the past 6 road games, too.

We’ve seen Duke cash the Under in 6 of the past 7 games, and the total has gone low in each of the past 5 outings in front of the home fans.

The offense has really struggled, averaging just 18.3 points per game to rank 115th nationally. Virginia is allowing just 19.3 PPG, so it’s no surprise the Under is 4-0 to date.

The Blue Devils started 3-0 SU/2-1 ATS, already surpassing the team’s Over for season wins. Duke suffered its first loss of the season last week at Kansas, a fellow season win total overachiever. The Under is 3-1 for Duke so far.

DUKE (-135) is worth playing on the moneyline, as it isn’t substantially more expensive than the juice to lay the points. This is going to be a close game, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see a 1- or 2-point game between two mediocre ACC teams.

Against the spread

DUKE -2.5 (-110) is worth playing lightly at home, where it is 2-0 SU/1-1 ATS, winning and covering its only game against an FBS opponent this season. Duke is 1-0 ATS as a favorite vs. FBS teams this season, too.

Over/Under

The UNDER 52.5 (-110) is the way to go here. UVA has cashed the Under in each of its 4 games to date and it struggles to score points while tossing a blanket on opposing offenses with its tremendous lockdown defense.

Duke has also played very good defense this season, although it has allowed 20 or more points in each of the last 3 games. Still, Virginia isn’t a high-octane offense and will have trouble moving the ball at Wallace Wade.

Virginia leads the ACC in defense, allowing just 59.6 points per game while holding opponents to 41.9% mark from the floor. The Cavaliers are coming off a Saturday win over Miami (Fla.) and have won two of their last three. In all three wins, the Wahoos held foes under 60 points.

The Blue Devils smothered North Carolina, 87-67, Saturday. Freshman F A.J. Griffin scored a career-high 27 points Saturday and has averaged 20.7 PPG over his last three contests. Duke has won five consecutive games and has held foes to a 37.4% shooting percentage in the process.

Duke’s 80.7 PPG rank 15th in the nation. Over the last three years, Virginia is 3-11 ATS when facing teams that score 77-plus points per contest. And the way the Blue Devils get their points — six players averaging more then 7.0 PPG — spells too wide a bandwidth for UVA to cover.

Duke had a couple shaky home games in January and is now back at home after three impressive road wins. Look for a push to turn recent successes into a bigger edge on home hardwood.

Virginia at Duke: Three things to know

UVA is coming off an abysmal Monday night loss at No. 16 Florida State. The 81-60 loss to the Seminoles marked the most-lopsided ACC defeat for Virginia in almost four years. The result snapped a four-game Cavalier winning streak.
The Blue Devils won their second straight game, downing Wake Forest, 84-60, Wednesday. The two wins came on the heels of a three-game losing streak which included two setbacks at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke has struggled on defense this season (their efficiency at that end of the floor ranks among the worst in the ACC), but the Devils have allowed just 113 combined points in the back-to-back wins.
Virginia’s three previous losses in 2020-21 have been followed by two ATS wins and a push. The combined ATS margin of victory in the wins was just 3-1/2 points, so the public has been dialed in on those follow-up games.

Duke (+120) is the likable side in this Saturday-nighter between two teams trending a bit in opposite directions. The 2-1/2-point spread offers a solid play on the Devils. A ML price closer to +130 would make for some leverage here.

Against the spread (ATS)

Duke looked solid in two home games before its three-game collapse. A youthful Devil five has been coming together in many respects. DU is playing better defense along the perimeter, and that’s a big key against, which likes to bomb the three. And Duke has improved its distance game, something that can work against UVA at times. Over its last four games, Duke is 41-of-90 (45.6%) from beyond the arc.

The Blue Devils have also logged better numbers against slower teams; UVA’s pace figures peg them as one of the slowest teams in the nation. No game in their last six has seen the Wahoos register more than 62 possessions.

BACK THE BLUE DEVILS +2.5 (-110).

Shading the Under is the lean. But a 133 total would be needed to create enough value. PASS.
