Var’Keyes Gumms ready to prove his All-American status at Arkansas

If Gumms’ transformation back to his freshman status is real, expect more two tight-end sets for the Hogs.

When Var’Keyes Gumms transferred to Arkansas ahead of the 2023 season, the Razorbacks appeared to have someone on the roster who could allow for the development of the team’s future.

Instead, Luke Hasz exploded onto the scene at tight end for Arkansas and Gumms, a Freshman All-American in 2022, was largley sidelined. Even after Hasz went down about a third of the way through the season, Gumms never really cracked the rotation. The North Texas transfer finished with just three catches for 26 yards in his 11 games.

The year before, Gumms caught 34 balls for 458 yards and five touchdowns en route to becoming one of the top targets the subsequent offseason in the transfer portal. So far this spring, he looks closer to the latter player than the former, even if he has no realistic chance of overtaking Hasz for the starting role.

“I think he’s the guy that we were hoping that we were getting a year ago,” Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said. “He’s one of our better protectors when we use our tight end in protection. But what we saw off of tape at North Texas, we’re seeing now here.”

Arkansas has not been shy about going to a two-tight end set in the Pittman era and with the lack of explosion the Hogs have at wideout combined with the difficulties the players up front had in protection, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Hasz and Keyes in such sets more often in 2024.

“Right now, he’s playing at a high rate of speed, and I think he’s playing with a lot of confidence,” Pittman said. “He’s worked extremely hard since the last of the season.”

Luke Hasz’s most likely replacement is a former Freshman All-American

The injury to freshman tight end Luke Hasz has created an opportunity. Can Var’Keyes Gumms grab it?

When Var’keyes Gumms committed to Arkansas out of the transfer portal, he instantly went to the top of the Razorbacks’ offseason depth chart at tight end. He just didn’t stay there.

The development of Luke Hasz, a freshman from Oklahoma, was quick and provided the four-star tight end immediate starting duties. But after Hasz was lost – likely for the season – last week against Texas A&M, Arkansas coach Sam Pittman is starting from scratch at the position and Gumms is hopeful to stake his true claim at the top.

“We’re going to open completely up our tight end situation and see who can play in there,” Pittman said. “Obviously we’ve been a little bit of musical chairs there, as well, with the exception of Luke (Hasz).”

Gumms is the only other tight end on the roster who has caught a pass this season, though it was just one and went for only two yards. But Ty Washington caught a touchdown last year against Kansas and Nathan Bax has been in the top three of the depth chart for the last three years.

If Pittman decides a pass-catching tight end is preferable over a blocking one, the hierarchy is likely Gumms, Washington, Bax. If a blocking one is preferred, the reverse order will likely hold.

Pittman recruited Gumms specfically out of the transfer portal and said Monday that the North Texas transfer, a Freshman All-American last year, likely only had a dearth of playing time because of Hasz’s development.

“His ability to make plays. He has it. He just has to make them,” Pittman said. “A lot of his non-playing was because of Luke. They were very similar in blocking, route-running, as far as where his assets were. I think you’ll see a good player in him.”

Arkansas Football: Preseason Depth Chart – Tight Ends

The Arkansas tight end room is short on experience, but has an abundance of potential. Here’s what the depth chart looks like ahead of week one.

Tight ends remain one of the biggest question marks for the Arkansas offense heading into their week one matchup with Western Carolina.

Over the summer, we looked at Arkansas’ tight ends groups and projected the depth chart ahead of fall camp. Now, with fall camp in the rearview mirror, the situation at the tight end is a little more clear for [autotag]Sam Pittman[/autotag] and new tight ends coach [autotag]Morgan Turner[/autotag].

As mentioned before, Turner brings an impressive resume with a proven track record of developing NFL-level tight ends, but will have quite the task in his first season at Arkansas.

The Razorback tight end room is short on experience this season, and Turner will need to rely on a handful of young guys in his first season with the Hogs. However, after fall camp, it’s easy to see that this young group has a lot of upside and potential.

Here’s what Arkansas’ tight end depth chart is looking like as we head the season.

Arkansas football: Offseason Depth Chart – Tight Ends

Arkansas’ tight ends are the least experienced group on the roster but have plenty of potential. Here’s how the depth chart looks for 2023.

[autotag]Arkansas football[/autotag]’s least experienced position group entering next season is, by far, tight end.

The tight end room was completely re-tooled in the offseason following Dowell Loggains’ exit to take the offensive coordinator position at South Carolina. Pittman swung for the fences by tabbing former Stanford tight end coach, [autotag]Morgan Turner[/autotag], to replace Loggains.

Turner brings an impressive resume with a proven track record of developing NFL-level tight ends, but will have quite the task in his first season at Arkansas.

The Razorbacks lost veteran tight end Trey Knox, who decided to follow Loggains to South Carolina following an impressive 2022 campaign. Without Knox, the Arkansas tight end room is short on experience. Turner will need to rely on a handful of talented, but severely inexperienced, guys in his first season with the Hogs.

Here’s what Arkansas’ tight end depth chart is looking like as we head into next season.

Which transfers are expected to start for Razorbacks?

Which offensive transfer additions on the offensive side of the ball are expected to start for the Razorbacks in 2023?

Arkansas will be impacted by transfer additions at every offensive position group except for running back in 2023, a position where the Razorbacks return 99.6 percent of the productivity from the 2022 season.

Arkansas is losing their top three wide receivers from last season – Jadon Haselwood and Matt Landers declared for the NFL Draft, while Ketron Jackson transferred to Baylor.

The group amassed a total of 134 receptions, 2,058 yards, and 16 touchdowns. This accounts for 58 percent of the receptions, 67 percent of the yardage, and 62 percent of the touchdown catches from the previous year.

Seven of the 18 transfers who are now enrolled or enrolling at Arkansas are offensive players.

Var’Keyes Gumms changes mind again, re-commits to Arkansas

Former North Texas tight end Var’Keyes re-committed to Arkansas from the transfer portal.

Former North Texas tight end Var’Keyes Gumms is back in the Arkansas fold.

Apparently.

About a week after de-committing from Arkansas out of the transfer portal, Gumms recommitted to the Razorbacks on Sunday. The rising sophomore originally declared his intent to play for Arkansas on April 23, but changed his mind on May 2.

Per a report by WholeHogSports’ Richard Davenport, Gumms said Arkansas stayed his top choice throughout, but he wanted to keep his options open.

Assuming Gumms stays, his addition provides Arkansas a measure of strength at the position. He graded out as the No. 8 tight end in the country last year by Pro Football Focus. Combined with the solid spring supplied by freshman Luke Hasz and the upside of redshirt freshman Ty Washington, the Razorbacks have their best options at tight end in about a decade.

Gumms caught 34 passes for 458 yards and five touchdowns last year for North Texas. The Razorbacks lost their starting tight end from last year, Trey Knox, to South Carolina via the portal. Knox had 26 receptions for 296 yards and five touchdowns.

Var’Keyes Gumms de-commits from Arkansas football

Talented transfer tight end Var’Keyes Gumms has de-committed from Arkansas after choosing the Razorbacks nine days ago.

Sam Pittman and Arkansas football have lost their first transfer commitment of this off-season.

Talented North Texas transfer [autotag]Var’Keyes Gumms[/autotag] has officially de-committed from the Razorbacks, according to Chris Hummer of 247Sports.com. Gumms had previously chosen the Razorbacks over a plethora of interested schools on April 23.

Gumms was rated as a four-star transfer after an extremely successful first season at North Texas. He hauled in 34 catches for 458 yards and five touchdowns on his way to first team All-Conference-USA and second team Conference-USA All-Freshman honors.

With Gumms’ de-commitment Arkansas is back to having seven available scholarships to use for next year’s roster. Unless the Razorbacks add another tight end to the roster, it will be up to true freshmen [autotag]Luke Hasz[/autotag] and [autotag]Shamar Easter[/autotag] or redshirt freshman [autotag]Ty Washington[/autotag] to carry the load.

North Texas TE transfer Var’Keyes Gumms announces college decision

North Texas TE transfer Var’Keyes Gumms announces college decision

The Oregon Ducks still have a big question to answer when it comes to what they’re going to do at the tight end position in the 2023 season.

After starter Terrance Ferguson went down with an injury earlier in this spring season and will be held out until this fall, it’s been made clear that Dan Lanning and Co. are looking hard at the transfer portal in order to find a TE who can help their depth.

The top option, North Texas TE Var’Keyes Gumms, announced on Sunday that he would be transferring to the Arkansas Razorbacks, choosing them over the Ducks.

The Ducks will continue to look at the portal over the next week before it closes again on April 30th. In the mean time, they will also continue to develop both Patrick Herbert and Kenyon Sadiq while hoping that Ferguson can make a quick recovery and be back in time for the season to start this fall.

Arkansas football lands TE Var’Keyes Gumms from transfer portal

Arkansas football continues to tear it up on the recruiting trail, this time adding a talented tight end from the transfer portal.

Sam Pittman and Arkansas football have landed their second transfer commitment in the month of April. North Texas tight end [autotag]Var’Keyes Gumms[/autotag] chose the Razorbacks after visiting Fayetteville over the weekend.

Gumms entered the portal in March and was a top priority for the Arkansas coaching staff. The redshirt freshman hauled in 34 receptions for 458 yards and five touchdowns in 14 games for the Mean Green last season. Those stats earned him first team All-Conference-USA and second team Conference-USA All-Freshman honors.

Arkansas currently has a pair of highly-touted true freshman four-star tight ends on the roster in Luke Hasz and Shamar Easter. But Sam Pittman has not been shy with his desire to add some experience to that position group.

It’s been a big week for the Razorback on the recruiting trail as they’ve picked up four commitments for the 2024 class. Now, they were able to add some immediate help for next season’s team with the 6-3, 230-pound Gumms.

Ducks extend offer to North Texas tight end Var’Keyes Gumms

The Ducks have reportedly offered former North Texas TE Var’Keyes Gumms, a 6-foot-6 player who had 5 TD as a freshman in 2022.

The Oregon Ducks are looking to fill out their tight end room in the wake of the injury to Terrance Ferguson that will keep him out for the remainder of spring camp.

On Monday, the Ducks reportedly extended an offer to North Texas tight end Var’Keyes Gumms, one of the top tight ends available in the transfer portal. In one season with North Texas, Gumms played in 14 games, catching 34 passes for over 450 yards and 5 TD.

Since entering the portal on Saturday, Gumms has received scholarship offers from a number of schools, including Oregon, Utah, Colorado, West Virginia, and others.

We will see if the Ducks can get him on campus for a visit and bring him into the fold, but landing a player like Gumms would be a big help for an Oregon team that needs depth at the TE spot.
