2019 Tennessee football: Week 14

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee will host Vanderbilt at Neyland Stadium in Week 14 of the 2019 season.

The contest will be televised on the SEC Network with Dave Neal (PxP), DJ Shockley (analyst) and Dawn Davenport (sideline) as the broadcast crew.

Kickoff for the matchup between the Vols and Commodores is set for 4 p.m. ET.

Fans can also listen to Tennessee’s official radio broadcast on the Vol Network (WIVK-FM 107.7) and satellite radio (Sirius Ch. 134, XM Ch. 190, Internet Ch. 961) with Bob Kesling (PxP), Tim Priest (analyst) and Brent Hubbs (analyst) on the call.

Vols have ‘good week of practice’ ahead of Vanderbilt game

2019 Tennessee football: Week 14

KNOXVILLE – Tennessee will conclude its regular season schedule Saturday against Vanderbilt.

The Vols are coming off a 24-20 road victory over Missouri – a win that made Tennessee bowl eligible.

Ahead of the in-state contest with the Commodores, Jeremy Pruitt said his team had a good week of practice.

“We’ve had another really good week of practice here,” Pruitt said. “Our guys continue to work hard to improve. We definitely, this past week, had a physical game, so we’ve got some guys that are banged up. It’s been a great opportunity for other guys to get more reps. They’ve done a nice job of that.

“It’s the last home game for these 13 seniors and I can’t say enough good things about them and the way they’ve represented the university, this program, this team, themselves, their families. We’ve had a fantastic atmosphere the entire year with our fanbase, from the Vol Walk, running through the T, the crowd experience has been great. I just want to ask everybody, I know it’s Thanksgiving weekend, but this group of seniors have really bought in to what we’re trying to get done here at Tennessee, we want to send them out the right way. I know we’ll do that.”

Tennessee and Vanderbilt will kickoff at 4 p.m. ET and will be televised by the SEC Network.

Welcome to a Thanksgiving edition of UT News, where the turkey is moist, the wonderful scents of the holiday permeate the room, and nobody fights at the table. There is not much on tap today to cover, though the Lady Vols volleyball team triumphed over Auburn for Senior Night and wet-head Erika Brown was named SEC Swimmer of the Week. So without further ado, on to the news.

Lady Vols grab Senior Night victory over Auburn

The Lady Vols volleyball squad defeated Auburn last night in four sets, in their final match of the season at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The cherry on top of the victory was that the win came on Senior Night, making it a suiting finale for the women who have played in their last home game in Knoxville. The triumph also gave the Volunteers their fourth victory in their last five matches. Tessa Grubbs’ 14 kills now places her at No. 8 all-time at Tennessee, with 1,405 kills in her four-year career.

Coach Eve Rackham had the following to say about the Senior Night win.

“You can’t hope for anything else other than to be able to play great at home and send your seniors out the right way. We gave them all a chance to start and they played so well. It’s kind of storybook ending, but that’s what you want to be able to do. And I just feel fortunate we were able to do that for them and to be able to repay as much as we can.”

The Lady Vols wrap up the season in Starkville, Miss. against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. UT has won four of their previous matches, including a sweep earlier this season. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET and will air on SEC Network+.

Tennessee-Vanderbilt game will feature a Blackhawk helicopter flyover

2019 Tennessee football: Week 14

KNOXVILLE – Tennessee will conclude the 2019 regular season Saturday when the Vols host the in-state Vanderbilt Commodores.

A Blackhawk helicopter flyover will take place ahead of the Tennessee-Vanderbilt contest.

The matchup will also be this year’s Salute to Service game. Select military personnel will lead the Vol Walk, as well as in-game recognitions will take place.

Tennessee and Vanderbilt will kickoff at 4 p.m. ET and will be televised by the SEC Network.

KNOXVILLE — When Vanderbilt comes to Neyland Stadium Saturday it will mark the 114th time that the Volunteers and Commodores will tangle on the gridiron.

Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. and the game will re-kindle Southeastern Conference rivalries and a bitter battle for in-state bragging rights.

UT holds the all-time edge in the series 75-33 and there have been five ties in this rivalry that dates back to 1892.

Vanderbilt, however, has won the last three contests in the series. The Commodores also won 11 of the first 12 games in the rivalry and the one game in which they didn’t prevail was a 0-0 tie in 1900.

The two teams played twice in 1892 with Vanderbilt nabbing a pair of victories.

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee enters its final regular season game of the 2019 season. The Vols will take on Vanderbilt in Week 14.

The contest will be redshirt senior Jauan Jennings’ final time playing at Neyland Stadium.

Ahead of the Tennessee-Vanderbilt game, Jennings discussed going through the Vol Walk for the last time.

“It’s going to be the last Vol Walk here in Knoxville, Tennessee,” Jennings said. “A lot could be said, but it’s just a lot of gratitude to this city and to this program, everything that they’ve done for me everything that they’ve done for my brothers. It means a lot.

“The fans, there’s nothing like them anywhere else in this country, so I’m definitely going to miss it.”

The 6-foot-3, 208-pound wide receiver also discussed what the Vanderbilt game means for the seniors.

“Last home game for us seniors, so it’s going to be a lot of emotions flowing,” Jennings said. “This for us as seniors is the last game in Neyland, so we don’t want to disappoint the fans that come here each and every Saturday that we have a game here. We’re just ready to go out there and win for them.”

 

Vanderbilt Keeping Mason Good News for Notre Dame

What it means for Notre Dame is that defensive coordinator Clark Lea won’t be leaving to take that head coaching vacancy that many feared he would.

Derek Mason is returning to Vanderbilt for a seventh year, Pete Thamel of Yahoo! Sports reported today which means good things for the Notre Dame football program.

You may be asking or saying to yourself “How the heck does it matter, they play Vandy once every 20 years or so, if that, so it’s not like an easy win is coming anytime soon for the Irish…”

Not that the last two times the two met were any walks-in-the-park for Old Notre Dame.

What it means for Notre Dame is that defensive coordinator Clark Lea won’t be leaving to take that head coaching vacancy that many feared he would.

Lea walked onto the football team at Vanderbilt after spending time early in college playing baseball at a couple of smaller schools. He wound up at Notre Dame as linebackers coach in 2017 before taking over the defensive coordinator position a year later.

With the success Lea’s defenses have had at Notre Dame the link to him taking a next step and becoming a head coach, specifically at his alma mater is obvious.

Right now the Notre Dame defense ranks in the top-20 nationally in fewest points per game, fewest yards per play, third down conversion percentage, passing yards per game, completion percentage and yards per pass-attempt.

As frustrating as the run defense was at times this year, you can’t argue the unit overall has produced yet again.

This isn’t an athletic director giving out a “yeah, we love him, he’s our coach” type of line, it’s an actual report that Mason will be back at Vanderbilt, who currently sits 2-8.

Which means Lea should in all-likelihood be back at Notre Dame in 2020, a great thing for the program.
