Aggie Hoops transfer portal target DJ Richards discusses recruitment journey

UTSA guard DJ Richards entered the transfer portal last week, and he’s been on the Aggie’s radar ever since

Texas A&M’s memorable 2022-2023 season is officially in the books, and even though the campaign ended in a disappointing 76-59 first-round loss to Penn State in the NCAA Tournament, things are looking up for a program that is in a great position to bring back four out five starters for the 2023 season.

While Tyrece Radford’s future in Aggieland still hangs in the balance, former Wichita State transfer Dexter Dennis’ Texas A&M journey has ended after one season, sent off in a farewell video that will indeed have you searching for the nearest tissue box.

Strategically, Head coach Buzz Williams is in dire need of shot creators and perimeter shooters after ranking 259th in 3-point percentage this season. Even though 2023 4-star guard Bryce Lindsay will arrive in College Station next season, he is the only commit in the 2023 class. So far, the transfer portal is chock-full of talent and experience, and in the midst of March Madness, more players are expected to join the portal at the season’s end.

One player that has caught the eye of Williams and his staff has been former UTSA guard DJ Richards, who entered the portal last week after posting 10.5 points per game and 4.7 rebounds in his freshman campaign. In an interview with GigEm247, Richards described his current transfer portal experience, stating,

“It’s been very busy.” “It has been kind of cool and it is kind of the recruitment I would have envisioned coming out of high school but Covid was here. The coaches have been able to see everything now though.”

When asked what he’s looking for program-wise, he answered,

“I want to somewhere that is going to help me get to the next step and a program that wants to win.”

Standing at 6-5, Richards’ value lies behind the 3-point line, shooting 33% from beyond this arc this season, while his ability as a consistent defender bodes well in helping replace the defensive prowess Dexter Dennis provided this season. Good luck to DJ during his selection process!

UTSA vs Southern Miss Game Preview, C-USA Tournament

Why UTSA Will Win

Southern Miss is having problems.

It beat Southeastern Baptist on January 19th. That’s the team’s only victory in the last 18 games.

It’s struggling to score, there’s nothing from three, and the defense is getting hampered way too easily thanks to a ton of turnovers leading to easy points. It’s not just they’re losing; they’re getting blown out.

UTSA doesn’t shoot well, but it comes up with a ton of offensive rebounds. It’s the best team on the boards in Conference USA, and Southern Miss can’t do anything on the glass.

However …

Why Southern Miss Will Win

Yeah, Southern Miss is 1-18 in its last 19 games. That ugly win started after a win over UTSA.

The Roadrunners are 3-14 in their last 17 games because it doesn’t soot well enough and the defense doesn’t generate enough stops.

Ball movement is a problem and getting easy shots hasn’t been easy. Southern Miss has a whole slew of problems, but it’s not bad at coming up with blocked shots.

Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s 105-66 win over UTSA

Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s blowout win over UTSA tonight in their season opener.

Oklahoma basketball finally got their season started Thursday night hosting UTSA at the Lloyd Noble Center.

They looked like they were making up for lost time, as the Sooners eviscerated the Roadrunners 105-66.

It was a wire-to-wire win for Oklahoma and they looked simply fantastic in just about every facet of the game.

Granted the competition wasn’t nearly as stiff as it going to get for the team very soon, this was still as encouraging a first outing as you could really ask for in an opener.

There is a lot to digest in a first game of the season, so here are the three biggest takeaways from the Sooners’ dominant season-opening win over UTSA:

Oklahoma will have nine scholarship players available for opener against UTSA

Lon Kruger provided on availability update on his team ahead of Oklahoma’s season opener Thursday night against UTSA.

Oklahoma basketball opens their season tonight at home against the UTSA Roadrunners at the Lloyd Noble Center.

This game was originally set for last Wednesday, but was pushed back due to a COVID-19 outbreak on the Sooners team that left them without the necessary number of scholarship players to play in the game.

On Tuesday, Lon Kruger met with the media to discuss the latest with his team ahead of their long-awaited return to the court.

The obvious question to many was just who exactly would be available for Oklahoma tonight given that they were unable to play a scheduled game with UCF just four days ago. Kruger didn’t give many specifics but did say they would have precisely nine scholarship players available for the game.

The only player Kruger mentioned directly as being out is sophomore forward Victor Iwuakor. A young player with potential, he is viewed as someone who could rise into a fairly significant contributor this season.

It is unclear if he will be able to return prior to Sunday’s Big 12 opener against TCU.

As for tonight’s game, the Sooners will tip of their season against UTSA tonight at 7:00 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on FOX Sports Oklahoma.

Oklahoma basketball reschedules game with UTSA for Thursday

Oklahoma basketball has rescheduled their previously postponed season opener against UTSA for this Thursday at the Lloyd Noble Center.

Oklahoma basketball has had a hard time getting their new season underway. Each of their first three games of the season were postponed due to COVID-19 issues on the team.

The first of which, a home game against UTSA, has now been officially rescheduled for Thursday night in Norman.

This game was originally set for last Wednesday, Nov. 25th before it had to be called off along with the Sooners’ road trip to take on UCF the following Sunday.

After Oklahoma’s third game of the year against Florida was also postponed, the team was set to have to open their season on the road against a Big 12 opponent in TCU this weekend. The motivation to get the UTSA game rescheduled as soon as possible is not hard to figure out as this provides them an opportunity to get some game reps before diving right into a conference matchup.

It has been a moving target the last week or so, but as of now the Sooners’ season opener is set for this Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. CT at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman. It may just about finally be basketball time in Oklahoma.
