Texas A&M’s memorable 2022-2023 season is officially in the books, and even though the campaign ended in a disappointing 76-59 first-round loss to Penn State in the NCAA Tournament, things are looking up for a program that is in a great position to bring back four out five starters for the 2023 season.
While Tyrece Radford’s future in Aggieland still hangs in the balance, former Wichita State transfer Dexter Dennis’ Texas A&M journey has ended after one season, sent off in a farewell video that will indeed have you searching for the nearest tissue box.
Strategically, Head coach Buzz Williams is in dire need of shot creators and perimeter shooters after ranking 259th in 3-point percentage this season. Even though 2023 4-star guard Bryce Lindsay will arrive in College Station next season, he is the only commit in the 2023 class. So far, the transfer portal is chock-full of talent and experience, and in the midst of March Madness, more players are expected to join the portal at the season’s end.
One player that has caught the eye of Williams and his staff has been former UTSA guard DJ Richards, who entered the portal last week after posting 10.5 points per game and 4.7 rebounds in his freshman campaign. In an interview with GigEm247, Richards described his current transfer portal experience, stating,
“It’s been very busy.” “It has been kind of cool and it is kind of the recruitment I would have envisioned coming out of high school but Covid was here. The coaches have been able to see everything now though.”
When asked what he’s looking for program-wise, he answered,
“I want to somewhere that is going to help me get to the next step and a program that wants to win.”
Standing at 6-5, Richards’ value lies behind the 3-point line, shooting 33% from beyond this arc this season, while his ability as a consistent defender bodes well in helping replace the defensive prowess Dexter Dennis provided this season. Good luck to DJ during his selection process!
