The Connecticut Huskies open the season Saturday against the Utah State Aggies at Maverik Stadium in Logan, Utah. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the UConn vs. Utah State odds, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Huskies begin anew with coach Jim Mora Jr., looking to get back to respectability. It’s going to be a slow go, however, as the Huskies had a terribly inefficient offense last season, and the defense struggled mightily, too. Even with modest gains in both areas this will still be a bad team.

After an 11-win season, the Aggies return QB Logan Bonner under center, while adding versatile QB Levi Mitchell from Wyoming. They’re going to be fine on offense, especially since USU loaded up at receiver via the portal. The O-line has 5 starters back, and RB Calvin Tyler Jr. is a solid tailback, too.

This will be the 2nd-ever meeting between these schools. Utah State topped UConn 38-31 in Storrs back in 2001.

Utah State 45, UConn 17

Money line

Betting Utah State (-5000) would mean you need to plop $100 down to win just $2. If that gets you going, more power to you, but that’s a terrible long-term wagering strategy. If you need $2 that badly, just check the change in your couch cushions.

AVOID.

Against the spread

The lean is to UTAH STATE -27.5 (-108), although it could be a close call if UConn +27.5 (-112) is able to surprisingly cobble together some points. The Huskies managed 17 or fewer points, including 2 shutouts, in 7 of their 12 games last season, and its only win was against FCS Yale, so don’t expect much.

Over/Under

The OVER 59.5 (-112) is worth playing here, as Utah State will do a lot of the heavy lifting and could easily get into the 50’s themselves. UConn won’t have to contribute much, if anything, to still cash a winning ticket for Over bettors.

The seventh-seeded Utah State Aggies take on the second-seed Colorado State Rams in the second round of the Mountain West Tournament Thursday. Tip-off from Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Utah State vs. Colorado State odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Aggies enter this game with an 18-14 record and off a first-round win over Air Force. Utah State won 83-56 and covered as a 15-point favorite.

The Aggies are 16-14-1 against the spread (ATS) on the season, and 9-8 straight up (SU) away from home, including a 5-1 record on neutral courts.

The second-seeded No. 24 Colorado State is an even more impressive 4-0 on a neutral court and 10-3 away from home.

They’re 14-13 ATS with a 24-4 straight-up record. CSU beat Utah State 66-55 Feb. 26 and picked up a 71-68 home win over the top-seeded Boise State March 5 in its regular-season finale.

I like Colorado State (-170) as it has looked like the far dominant side all season, but the value for them to win outright isn’t quite in my ballpark. I’d rather play the spread.

Against the spread

LEAN to COLORADO STATE -3.5 (-108).

CSU beat Utah State 77-72 on its home court as it failed to cover as a 6.5-point favorite Jan. 12, and then toppled Utah State 66-55 in Utah Feb. 26, a far more impressive showing as it covered as a 3-point underdog.

Colorado State is on a three-game win streak with victories over Wyoming, Utah State and Boise State.

The Rams also have the seventh-best free-throw shooting rate in the nation at 78.8%. That’s going to be immensely helpful if this game is close down the stretch and Utah State tries to extend it with fouling.

COLORADO STATE -3.5 (-108) seems like the better side to back given it does so well in free-throw shooting and is 14th nationally in field-goal shooting.

Over/Under

LEAN to the OVER 136.5 (-115).

This will be the lowest total this matchup has seen with the highest being 150 in a game which CSU won at home 77-72.

CSU might by 10-17 O/U on the season, but it ranks 14th in field goal percentage and Utah State ranks 24th. Both teams have been competent shooting the ball this season.

Utah State is 6-0 O/U at a neutral site this season.

Colorado State won the last CSU-USU meeting 77-72 Jan. 13. Junior G David Roddy scored 24 points to lead the Rams in what was a bounce-back after a Jan. 8 loss at San Diego State.

High-octane CSU is the highest-scoring team in the MWC with 75.5 points per game and is coming off a 61-55 win at home over Wyoming Wednesday. The Rams fell 72-51 at UNLV Feb. 19 in their last road tilt.

The Aggies defeated New Mexico 81-56 Tuesday. The home win snapped a four-game losing skid and improved their record to 5-1 at home since Jan. 26. The Aggies have shot 49% or better in four of those six games.

Utah has played some better defensive squads of late. The Aggies own a sound offense; look for a solid shooting performance on their home floor. Recent road games at UNLV (a blowout loss) and New Mexico (a win but with plenty of trouble throughout) stand out as warning signs for Colorado State.

Against the spread

Utah State is 5-1 ATS across its last six battles with the Rams.

Look for USU to outshoot CSU inside the arc. The Rams’ recent road shooting from the perimeter has been pedestrian. The probability of a 2-to-3-possession Aggies win is high enough to warrant a moderate lean on UTAH STATE -2.5 (-112).

Over/Under

PASS, although an Over play would be worth a look if this total drops.

Utah State shot a lights-out 55.0% in its last game, a 90-87 overtime triumph at New Mexico Saturday. The Aggies are a good shooting team overall but one with wild swings in 3-point and free-throw accuracy game by game. Overall, their 55.8% effective field-goal rate ranks 15th in the nation.

The Rams dropped out of the top 25 after they were blitzed by 30 (79-49) in a loss at San Diego State Saturday. The MWC’s second-leading scoring team (79.2 points per game) shot a season-low 27.9% from the field at SDSU. Colorado State now returns to its home floor where it hasn’t lost since Jan. 29, a streak of 10 straight games.

Money line

This is a generous price compared to the market, Colorado State has a much  better offense and takes care of the ball. The Rams’ last two games — a non-cover at home and a blowout loss on the road — came after a three-week layoff due to COVID-19 protocols. Look for a rebound effort on a home floor where CSU carries a hefty advantage.

Utah State trades offensive rebounds for 3-point shooting, but the Aggies have gone just 5-for-35 (14.3%) from distance over their last two games.

TAKE THE RAMS (-250).

Against the spread

The favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five USU-CSU meetings.

More risk-averse bettors may want to consider COLORADO STATE -5.5 (-112) instead of the outright play above. USU is without the services of senior G Brock Miller (back injury). Miller is the Aggies’ third-leading scorer and one of their top threats from 3-point range. His absence cuts into USU’s probability of a back-door cover.

Over/Under

The Over is 6-1 in the Aggies’ last seven road games.

Both teams play at a moderate pace, but offense is their bread-and-butter. Tag the OVER 150.5 (-110) with a heavy lean since it has steamed up three points this afternoon.

Oregon State is going bowling for the first time since 2013 thanks to its excellent offensive line and running game. RB B.J. Baylor rushed for 1,259 yards and 13 touchdowns and figures to get a heavy workload in this one against a Utah State rush defense allowing 162.6 yards per game (82nd nationally).

But Utah State didn’t get here because of its defense – the Aggies have one of the most prolific passing attacks in the country, throwing for 305.8 yards per game to rank 15th nationally). Look for the dynamic combination of QB Logan Bonner (3,560 passing yards) and WR Deven Thompkins (1,589 receiving yards) to have a field day against a Beavers pass defense that ranks 87th in yards allowed (241.1 yards per game).

Money line

While we have to take Utah State’s 10-3 record with a level-of-competition grain of salt, it enters this game on a roll. The Aggies have won seven of their last eight games and have covered in six of their last seven.

Outside of its Oct, 23 win over Utah, Oregon State’s wins have generally come from lower-level, Pac-12 competition. With two mediocre defenses on the field, we’ll hedge that the offense with the more explosive passing attack will pull this one out.

UTAH STATE (+210) is good enough to win outright, and the odds are fantastic.

Against the spread

If you think the Aggies are good enough to win outright – that’s our call here – then take the primo odds on the money line and PASS on the spread.

Over/Under

While both defenses are mediocre, they’ve given up a combined total of just 51.2 points per game this season – far below the number in this game. It’s not quite that simple since both offenses have been above average, but we’ll lean to the UNDER 68.5 (-108) given Oregon State’s lack of a passing game.

Utah State advanced to its first Mountain West title game since 2013 under first-year head coach Blake Anderson.

Aggies junior transfer QB Logan Bonner has the third-best passer efficiency rating in the conference (154.9) and First-Team All-Mountain West WR Deven Thompkins leads the conference in all major receiving stats. Utah State is 8-4 ATS and 5-7 O/U.

San Diego State is seeking its first 12-win season in school history under second-year head coach Brady Hoke. The Aztecs have the best defense in the conference and the most First-Team All-Mountain West selections. The Aztecs are 6-5-1 ATS and 5-7 O/U.

PASS since I like the Aztecs to win this game outright but San Diego State (-240) is a little too expensive.

Against the spread

BET SAN DIEGO STATE -5.5 (-115) for 1 unit because Utah State’s offense is too one-dimensional for this stout Aztec defense.

For instance, the Aggies’ rushing attack ranks 122nd out of 130 FBS programs in predicted points added (PPA) on the ground. Also, Utah State’s offense has the seventh-worst rushing success rate in the nation and is 117th in line yards per snap.

Conversely, San Diego State’s defense ranks third in rushing PPA, seventh in rushing success rate and 11th in line yards per snap. If Utah State cannot run the ball then San Diego State will get the Aggies off the field fast.

The Aztecs are top-20 in passing down PPA and success rate and have the seventh-best opponent’s 3rd-down conversion rate. Furthermore, this San Diego State defense is stacked with talent. In fact, the Aztecs have an All-Mountain West Football First-Team defensive player on all three levels.

Over/Under

BET 1 unit on the UNDER 49.5 (-107) because there’s only been a combined 50 points scored in one of San Diego State’s eight conference games this year. Also, the Aztecs are 2-6 O/U vs. Mountain West teams.

And while San Diego State has one of the most efficient defenses in the country, its offense is the weak link. For example, the Aztecs rank 97th in offensive points per drive and 117th in offensive points per play, according to Football Outsiders.

Lastly, the Utah State-San Diego State total was quickly lowered after early sharp money came in on the Under. Circa Sports in Las Vegas (a market-making sportsbook) opened this game with a 51.5-point total before the market steamed it down to the current number.

For me, there’s still value in the UNDER 49.5 (-107) based on the previous analysis.

On Sept. 25, the Rams lost 24-14 at Iowa. The Hawkeyes had three short-field scoring drives in that one, and Colorado State acquitted itself well.

These two MWC foes did not play last year. Utah State defeated CSU 34-24 in 2019, so there is some revenge bent to the Rams butting back here. In that 2019 game, the Aggies had two short-field scores, a defensive TD, and a special teams TD.

The money line price here is solid: TAKE THE RAMS (-150).

Against the spread

AVOID: things could get close late against a Utah State team prone to play in close games.

Over/Under

The Under is 6-2 in the last eight CSU-USU meetings, and it’s a significant lean Friday.

When the Aggies have the football, it’s a strength-on-strength matchup, but one earned with plenty of weak schedule components on both sides. Utah State’s 108th ranking in total defense is one that stands out.

At first glance, that figure has been earned against a decent collection of opponents. But upon closer inspection, those opposing offenses don’t hold up.

Meanwhile, CSU’s offense figures to be trending the right way, and it has shown some signs of being for real.

It’s four up and four down for the Cougars. It hasn’t been easy, either, as QB Jaren Hall went down with a lower leg injury on the final drive against Arizona State in Week 3. It was next man up, as QB Baylor Romney stepped right in and led a scoring drive, and then took the team to a win last week against USF, connecting on a touchdown with his brother WR Gunner Romney.

After rolling up three wins and three covers, the Aggies had cold water splashed on them at home last week against the Boise State Broncos. Utah State was outscored 27-3, failing as a 9.5-point underdog as the Under connected. The Aggies’ biggest issues are on defense where they rank 121st with 463.3 total yards allowed.

I like BYU to continue unbeaten, although it’ll certainly get a test from Utah State. The Aggies are a solid team offensively who could catch the Cougars in the right moment. However, there is just something about this BYU team that always seems to find a way to get the win.

The Cougars will pull away for the cover in the fourth quarter.

AVOID, as you can’t risk more than three times your potential return.

Against the spread

BYU -9.5 (-115) is a great play on the road in this rivalry game, although it won’t be an easy cover. It will likely take a late score to grab the backdoor cover after a tough test from Utah State.

The Aggies have won two of the last three in this series, although the Cougars rolled up a 42-14 win in Logan the last time these teams met on Nov. 2, 2019.

Over/Under

UNDER 63.5 (-108) is the lean, but it’s only worth a small-unit play.

The Under has cashed in three of the last four games for the Cougars, with the Over hitting last time out as South Florida’s overachieved Saturday in Provo.

The Under is a risky play though, as Utah State ranks 9th in total yards per game (533.3) and 121st with total yards allowed (463.3).

NORTH DAKOTA +6.5 (-108) is worth a look to keep it close, as the Fighting Hawks are not your typical FCS team. They’re a powerhouse, led by QB Tommy Schuster and RB Otis Weah. The latter ran for 114 yards and 3 touchdowns last week in the win at Idaho State.

UND needs to be a little more disciplined, as it was penalized seven times for 72 yards. The good news is it was plus-3 in the turnover department.

Over/Under

UNDER 53.5 (-110) is the lean, ever so slightly. Utah State looks to have a capable signal-caller under center, as Bonner followed head coach Blake Anderson to Logan from Arkansas State. The offense had to settle for three field goals in the first three quarters last weekend and had difficulty piercing the end zone until late.

This won’t be a defensive battle, but it won’t be a track meet, either. The books have it right, as this one will be close to the number.

The Aggies tumbled to a 1-5 mark last season. Utah State made a change at the top, and head coach Blake Anderson comes over from Arkansas State to take the reins. QB Logan Bonner and WR Brandon Bowling follow Anderson from Jonesboro to Logan to give USU an immediate injection of talent.

The run-and-shoot is in effect in Pullman. After a strange 2020 campaign with little to no time to implement his system, head coach Nick Rolovich has had a full and more normal offseason to get things in place.

RB Max Borghi is a jack of all trades who should shine in Rolovich’s system, and they return top-notch WRs Renard Bell and Travell Harris. QBs Jayden de Laura and Tennessee transfer Jarrett Guarantano are likely to split work under center, at least early on.

Risking eight times your potential return on Washington State (-800) is not a recommended play. That’s just too much risk, especially for a team with some question marks under center.

AVOID.

Against the spread

UTAH STATE +17.5 (-107) should be much better this season, especially with a bona fide winner in Bonner under center. While he is new to Logan, he isn’t new to Anderson’s system. He’ll shine, regardless of the logo on the side of his helmet, due to the familiarity.

I don’t expect the Aggies to win this one outright, but I do think they’ll give Wazzu a scare. Rolovich and the Cougs are still trying to find their way after transitioning from Mike Leach and the “Air Raid” offense in 2019.

Over/Under

OVER 66.5 (-107) is the play here. Washington State has a multi-faceted back in Borghi who can do big things and several receivers who can house it every time they touch the ball. The Cougars will pass, pass and then pass more. Over bettors love teams addicted to the pass.

Utah State averaged just 15.5 points per game in 2020, but it will be much, much better with Bonner and Anderson at the helm. The Aggies are going to be much more exciting, and it will show immediately in this potential shootout.
