5-star QB decommits from USC after visiting Georgia

Georgia football is looking for its quarterback of the future? Could UGA land a recent USC decommitment?

Five-star quarterback recruit Julian Lewis decommitted from the USC Trojans. Lewis elected to decommit from USC shortly after visiting the Georgia Bulldogs for the Tennessee game.

USC quickly found another elite quarterback commitment: five-star Husan Longstreet, who had been committed to Texas A&M.

Lewis is a member of the class of 2025 and plays football for Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Georgia. Lewis is the No. 5 quarterback and the No. 31 recruit in the country, per the 247Sports composite. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound quarterback is the sixth-ranked recruit in Georgia.

Lewis is projected to commit to the Colorado Buffaloes according to 247Sports. Georgia and Indiana are also in the mix for Lewis.

Georgia is also targeting a four-star California quarterback commit and a four-star Mississippi State quarterback commit. The Bulldogs are looking for a replacement at quarterback for Carson Beck, who is projected to enter the 2025 NFL draft.

In 2023, Julian Lewis passed for 3,094 passing yards, 48 touchdowns and two interceptions. Lewis was named as the MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year for his efforts in 2023, leading Carrollton to an 11-2 season and 7A quarterfinals appearance.

Lewis caught the eyes of college football recruiters with his amazing freshman season at Carrollton. Lewis helped Carrollton reach the 7A state final and set a state final record with 531 passing yards in a loss.

Has DeShaun Foster outcoached Lincoln Riley in 2024?

This is quite a turn of events.

Entering the year, DeShaun Foster was the laughingstock of the Big Ten, especially after his media day appearance.

After a 1-5 start, questions swirled even more about Foster.

However, weeks later, UCLA has won three in a row, and the crosstown rival USC Trojans have dropped to 4-5 and 2-5 in Big Ten play.

As such, a debate could be had about the Lincoln Riley vs. DeShaun Foster performances.

Matt Zemek of Trojans Wire makes an interesting argument: DeShaun Foster has outcoached Lincoln Riley in 2024.

“Yes, UCLA football coach DeShaun Foster has outcoached USC football boss Lincoln Riley in 2024. It feels jarring and disorienting to say it, but it’s true. How can it not be? UCLA has a chance to make a bowl game this season, something which didn’t seem very likely when the Bruins stumbled early and faced a daunting Big Ten schedule. USC started 2-0 this season and seemed to have a chance to achieve something. Yet, everything has spiraled for USC, all while UCLA has made steady improvements.”

USC has moved on from Miller Moss for the time being, and all sorts of questions are coming around regarding Riley’s future. On the other hand, UCLA is trending up after a brutal start to the season.

What world is this?

Where did the Oklahoma Sooners land in latest US LBM Coaches Poll after week 6?

Where did the Oklahoma Sooners land in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll after their bye during week 6?

It was a wild weekend of college football action as several of the top-ranked teams in the nation fell at the hands of lower-ranked or unranked teams on Saturday. It created a lot of chaos in our updated SEC power rankings and had college football fans abuzz with all of the upsets.

The Oklahoma Sooners sat idle in the first two bye weeks this season. But even on a bye, the Sooners moved up one spot in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll to No. 16 in the nation.

Turmoil at the top gave the Texas Longhorns 44 of the possible 55 first-place votes even while on a bye to remain in the No. 1 spot ahead of the Red River Showdown. Ohio State came in at No. 2 and received the other 11 first-place votes after their dominant win over the Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Oregon Ducks moved up to No. 3 in the nation, setting up a top-three matchup with the Buckeyes next week in Eugene, Oregon. Georgia moved up to No. 4, and Penn State comes in at No. 5, giving the Big Ten three of the top five spots in the Coaches Poll.

There was a lot of movement among teams the Sooners have played or will play later in the season.

After their losses to unranked teams, Alabama and Tennessee dropped five spots to No. 7 and No. 9. A pair of teams Oklahoma will face later in the season moved into the top 10, with Ole Miss at No. 8 after their big road win over South Carolina and LSU at No. 10.

The Sooners were jumped by Texas A&M, who earned a dominant 41-7 win over the Missouri Tigers. The Aggies moved up seven spots with the win. The undefeated BYU Cougars also jumped the Sooners, moving up four spots to No. 15 in the country.

Also of note, the USC Trojans dropped from No. 15 to outside the top 25 after their loss to Minnesota. Lincoln Riley is now 5-7 in his last 12 games.

In their remaining games, the Oklahoma Sooners will play four teams ranked in the top 10.

Here’s a look at the latest US LBM Coaches Poll.

D’Anton Lynn halftime adjustments hint at how good USC defense can be

D’Anton Lynn’s second-half results speak for themselves as the Trojans exit September and enter October with only one loss.

Good coaching is always evident in the player development and weekly game planning that are required to sustain successful seasons by stringing together victories. This is true at USC. It is true anywhere else. Great coaches can adapt on the fly and make the changes needed at halftime to correct issues with scheme, matchups and new wrinkles that were not seen on film in the weeks leading up to the game. Nobody at USC was better at this than Pete Carroll. If you gave him a few weeks to prepare for a team or scheme, it was almost certain that the Trojans would come away with a win. His record in big season openers and bowl games proves this. Now D’Anton Lynn is trying to create the same legacy and reality at USC.

D’Anton Lynn did a masterful job against Michigan by making the halftime adjustments which led to 25 brilliant minutes at the start of the second half. Lynn didn’t have any film on how the Wolverines were going to run the offense under first-time starting quarterback Alex Orji, and it showed in the first half with the Wolverines rushing for over 200 yards, but that changed in the second half. Lynn shut down the Michigan offense in the second half allowing the Trojans to come back and take the lead with a few minutes left.  Until a few uncharacteristic missed tackles late in the game, USC’s defense had held Orji and the Wolverines to 19 total yards and zero first downs in the second half — pure domination.

In the sesason opener, Lynn’s adjustments at the half significantly crippled the LSU offense. Tiger receiver Kyren Lacy had a career day in the first half and was shut down after halftime adjustments were made.

USC outscored Wisconsin 28-0 in the second half on Saturday. The Trojans Trailed the Badgers 21-10 at halftime.  Wisconsin was unable to do anything on offense after the midgame break and mustered under 100 yards of offense the rest of the way.  The Badgers’ second half consisted of 3 first downs, 32 rushing yards, 14 pass attempts for 50 yards, 82 total yards and 1 of 6 3rd down conversions.

USC has outscored its opponents 87-23 in the second half this season. USC held Wisconsin to 286 total yards, the second time in four games this season of holding the opponent under 300 total yards (190 versus Utah State). USC held one opponent under 300 total yards last season. USC has held its last three opponents to an average of 266 total yards (Utah State, Michigan, Wisconsin). D’Anton Lynn is building a winning profile at USC.

USC will need to stop Wisconsin’s star wide receiver

Wisconsin receiver Will Pauling is viewed as the Badgers’ main pass-catching target, and therefore someone USC has to focus on in Week 5.

Locked On Badgers podcast host Ryan Harings joined us on Trojan Conquest live and we asked him about the playmakers on the Wisconsin Badgers team that will test USC’s defense on Saturday. One name which immediately came up: receiver Will Pauling.

“Yeah it’s not a long list unfortunately for Badger fans, but Will Pauling is a guy that you’re absolutely going to see a lot,” Harings explained. “He’s got 29 Targets this year for the Badgers that’s the guy who far and away leads the team in targets.   He leads the team in catches and had 74 receptions last year — really explosive player, North and South. Undersized but tough, physical. He will go over the middle, will take a hit, hold on to the ball, then when he catches it he embodies that Kyle Shanahan type of mentality — get north-south immediately north-south quick.”

Harings continued:

“Bryson Green, the Oklahoma State transfer, is more of our big-bodied guy.  You’re gonna see some of him. A young player that Badger fans are still waiting to break out is Trech Kekahuna. I’m curious, coming out of the bye, if they’re able to get him some looks. Coming into camp this year, a lot of hype (surrounded) the type of guy we’re going to get. He’s going to be explosive. Coming out of the bye that might be something to take a look at.”

Oddlly, Wisconsin has been run-heavy so far under new offensive coordinator Phil Longo, who everyone expected would install his air raid offense. The Badgers are averaging over 40 carries per game this year.

“You’re going to see a lot of the running game,” offered Harings about the Badgers’ offensive game plan. “You’re going to see Tawee Walker.  It’s more of a running back by committee though. It’s not that traditional great Wisconsin running back; you’re not going to see a Montee Ball-type talent.  Will Pauling’s the receiver to key on, and then it’s gonna be running back by committee for Wisconsin.”
