Alabama finishes season No. 5 in final USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Alabama finishes the season ranked No. 5 in the final USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Alabama finished the 2022 college football season with 11 wins and only two losses with one of those wins coming from a dominant Sugar Bowl performance.

Though this may be a season worth celebrating for most programs, it doesn’t meet the championship standard set by Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide.

Despite a blowout in the College Football Playoff national championship, not much changed near the top in the final USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Georgia keeps the No. 1 spot after embarrassing TCU on the biggest stage in college football. TCU sits at No. 2, Michigan at No. 3, and Ohio State at No. 4.

Alabama, once again, falls just outside the top four teams and is ranked No. 5.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover Alabama football as the 2023 college football offseason gets underway.

Ohio State rises in latest USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Ohio State mirrored other polls and rose in the latest USA TODAY Coaches Poll. #GoBucks

The latest USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll is out, and although it’s all about the College Football Playoff rankings, it’s interesting to see where the Buckeyes fell after this weekend’s championship games.

As it stands, Ohio State did indeed move up a couple of spots to kind of mirror the result of the Buckeyes making the College Football Playoff.  They rose to No. 3 by leapfrogging USC and TCU who both lost in their conference title games over the weekend. Ahead of the Buckeyes are Georgia (1) and Michigan (2).

We’ve also got the rest of the top ten for you, but before we dive into that, here’s the rest of the top 25 leading up to the top ten.

What the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll looks like before bowl season

The USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll has been updated one more time before the start of bowl season.

Florida didn’t play during conference championship week after a disappointing 6-6 finish to the year, but there was still plenty of action that changed up the final USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll ahead of bowl season.

Georgia got the job done against LSU in convincing fashion and remained at the top of the poll. Michigan handled Purdue in the Big Ten Championship to hold on to the No. 2 spot, but disaster struck for the teams in the Nos. 3 and 4 spots.

USC tumbled against Utah — a team Florida beat at the start of the season and will face on the road to begin next season — by 23 points and fell out of the top four opening the door for an idle Ohio State team to jump back into the playoff field. TCU held onto a top-four spot following a much closer contest against Kansas State that went into overtime, and Clemson came out on top of North Carolina in the ACC Championship to wrap up the Power Five results.

Here’s a look at the penultimate USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll in its entirety.

TCU remains in top four in USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

The TCU Horned Frogs remained in the top four in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after their loss to Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship. From @bendackiw

The coaches appear to be in TCU’s corner after their heartbreaking Big 12 Championship loss to Kansas State. The Horned Frogs dropped only one spot to No. 4 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

USC was not so lucky. The Trojans dropped down to No. 8 after their loss in the Pac-12 Championship to Utah. Ohio State took their spot in the top four, and with TCU moving down to No. 4, the Buckeyes are now at No. 3. Georgia and Michigan remain at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively.

The College Football Playoff Committee ended up doing right by TCU by keeping them at No. 3 and putting Ohio State at No. 4. Putting Alabama in with two losses would have set a dangerous precedent that the committee probably would not stick to when a two-loss team not named Alabama is on the playoff bubble.

So the College Football Playoff Semifinals will see Georgia take on Ohio State in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta and The Horned Frogs heading out west to play Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl.

A Michigan-Ohio State rematch would have been a very fun semifinal matchup, and TCU-Georgia would have been a sneaky good game.

The Oklahoma Sooners did not receive any votes. OU fans will have to wait until the 2023 season to see their teams in the polls.

Gators pick up some votes in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Florida finally received some votes in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after beating South Carolina! Can the Gators crack the top 25?

The Gators took down the South Carolina Gamecocks Saturday, 38-6, and picked up some support from the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll voters as a result.

Florida finished with eight points in this week’s poll, which is good for an unofficial share of the No. 34 spot on the list. Pittsburgh and Kentucky also received eight votes.

It’s a bit surprising to see Florida struggle to garner any support at this point this year considering the quality of losses the team has suffered so far. Three of Florida’s four losses this season have come to teams that are currently ranked in the top 10 (Georgia, LSU and Tennessee). The Kentucky loss looks a bit worse now that the Wildcats have stumbled out of the top 25 and are losing to the like of Vanderbilt, though.

UF has two more weeks to impress the votes, and a win over Florida State in the regular season finale might just do the trick. The Seminoles are currently ranked No. 20 in the Coaches Poll, so it’d be a quality win for the Gators.

Here’s a look at the poll in its entirety.
