USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll moves Penn State into top 4

Penn State moved up to No. 4 in the updated USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

An eventful week around college football has benefitted Penn State in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. Following a 24-0 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers in Week 5, Penn State has moved up two spots in this week’s coaches poll.

The Nittany Lions took advantage of an upset of the Oregon Ducks by Stanford this week. Oregon fell from No. 3 in the poll all the way down to No. 9 after their loss to the Cardinal in Pac-12 play in Week 5. Oddly enough, the voters in the coaches poll also moved Ohio State up three spots, placing the Buckeyes ahead of the Ducks by two spots despite a head-to-head loss at home to Oregon in Week 2.

Penn State also moved one spot ahead of Oklahoma, with the Sooners dropping one spot after their win at Kansas State this weekend.

Four Big Ten teams appear in the top 10 of the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. Penn State’s next opponent, Iowa, is the highest-ranked at No. 3, with Penn State right behind them. And one spot behind Ohio State is Michigan at No. 8. Michigan State is just outside the top 10, coming in at No. 11  after moving up five spots this week among the ranking shuffle this week.

Auburn continues to be viewed as a quality win for Penn State. The Tigers moved up three spots to No. 19 after their first road win at LSU since 1999.

It’s no surprise that Alabama remains the No. 1 team with 63 out of 65 first-place votes heading their way. Georgia has taken the two remaining first-place ballots and is cemented as the No. 2 team in the country.

A look at the full coaches poll after week five’s games.

Gators see biggest drop in latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Florida dropped nine spots to No. 18 in the latest Coaches Poll.

Florida’s football team laid an egg in the first road game of conference play on Saturday night. Facing a Kentucky Wildcats team that has proved tricky in recent years, the Gators looked overmatched all game. They were dominated up front en route to a 20-13 loss that essentially ended Florida’s quest for back-to-back SEC East titles (and perhaps more).

Unsurprisingly, UF saw a big drop in this week’s edition of the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. In fact, no team in the current rankings dropped further.

The Gators fell nine spots this week from No. 9 to No. 18. Florida is now just the fifth-highest ranked SEC team after No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Georgia, No. 14 Kentucky, No. 16 Arkansas and No. 17 Ole Miss. UF still (somewhat surprisingly) ranks above a one-loss Auburn team who scored a minor upset on the road against LSU on Saturday night. The Tigers are one spot behind at No. 19.

Florida could see its ranking drop even farther in the next few weeks, as after a tune-up at home against Vanderbilt, it hits the road for a matchup with LSU in Death Valley. After a bye, the Gators then draw Georgia. They will definitely be underdogs against UGA, and they could very well be in Baton Rouge, too.

The floor of this season got significantly lower with the loss to Kentucky, and it could be a battle for Florida to remain ranked with the coming schedule.

Here’s the full poll.

The latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll and where LSU opponents rank

A look at the updated Coaches Poll and where LSU opponents sit in the latest edition.

The LSU Tigers were close to getting back into the top 25 of the coaches poll. All they had to do was beat the No. 22 Auburn Tigers in Death Valley, only it didn’t happen. USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll was released on Sunday. The Tigers now sit at 3-2 with another top 25 matchup this week against the Kentucky Wildcats. Their opponent upset the Florida Gators at home, and host the Bayou Bengals on Saturday night.

Alabama had a huge matchup with the Ole Miss Rebels but they raced out to a 35-0 lead in the second half. Georgia also faced a top 12 team in the No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks, much like Alabama it wasn’t close. Texas A&M Aggies came in as the No. 15 team but fell to Mississippi State at home.

Oklahoma continues its slide down the AP Top 25 Poll

Despite a 4-0 record, Oklahoma continues to slide in the AP Top 25.

Another week, another hard-fought win for the Oklahoma Sooners.

OU’s 16-13 win over West Virginia is its third nail-biting victory through four games. Despite a 4-0 record, Oklahoma continues to fall in the polls due to its inability to win games in a commanding fashion.

After dropping to no. 4 in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, Oklahoma also slides to no. 6 in the latest AP Top 25.

Two members of the Big 10 now sit above the Sooners. Penn State (4-0) moves into the four spot after knocking off Villanova, and the Iowa Hawkeyes (4-0) continue to hold steady at no. 5.

After OU, Cincinnati (3-0), Arkansas (4-0), Notre Dame (4-0), and Florida (3-1) round out the top 10.

Arkansas skyrocketed to no. 8 after taking down Texas A&M, 20-10. And Clemson plummeted to no. 25 after falling to NC State on the road.

Dropped from the rankings:

No. 14 Iowa State, No. 18 Wisconsin, No. 21 North Carolina, No. 25 Kansas State

Others receiving votes:

Oklahoma drops one spot in latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Despite the win, the Sooners fell one spot as Oregon replaces Oklahoma at no. 3 in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

The Oklahoma Sooners got the win over Big 12 foe West Virginia, but it was hardly convincing, and for the second straight week, they won a game despite the offense struggling to score.

West Virginia’s defense is good, but Oklahoma failed to capitalize on opportunities where receivers ran open or got behind the defense. The offensive line struggled in both the run game and in pass protection, and Spencer Rattler didn’t look like the same player he was last year. And yet, despite all of that, the Sooners’ offense came up with a drive at the end of the game to get the win on a Gabe Brkic 30-yard field goal.

Despite the win, the Sooners dropped one spot in the poll as Oregon replaced Oklahoma at no. 3 in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

On the bright side, the Oklahoma defense continues to prove they’re legit as they held a good Mountaineers running game in check.

Oklahoma State climbs four spots in the poll while Baylor makes a big jump and joins the top 25 for the first time this season. Even with their big win over Texas Tech, the Texas Longhorns sit on the outside looking in as the top vote-getter among “other teams receiving votes.”

Wisconsin drops out of latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

After a tough loss to Notre Dame, the Badgers have dropped out of the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll:

After a devastating blowout loss to the now No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Wisconsin Badgers have dropped from No. 15 to unranked in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Wisconsin was not the only team to drop from the top 15 to unranked, as Iowa State also went unranked after their loss to Baylor on Saturday. It will be a tough road back into the AFCA Coaches Poll, as the Badgers will have to face No. 14 Michigan next weekend.

Other than the Badgers, every other ranked Big Ten team has moved up in this week’s poll including Michigan and Michigan State both moving up five spots to No. 14 and No. 16. Ohio State climbed back to No. 10, while Penn State and Iowa moved up to No. 6 and No. 5.

The USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll top 10 for this week is Alabama(1), Georgia(2), Oregon(3), Oklahoma(4), Iowa(5), Penn State(6), Notre Dame(7), Cincinnati(8), Florida(9) and Ohio State(10).

The Badgers will face off next against the Michigan Wolverines at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 11 a.m CDT.

USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll moves Penn State up two spots after Week 4

Where is Penn State ranked in the updated USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll after their win over Villanova?

Once again, Penn Stae football is moving up in the national polls. Following their victory over Villanova at home on Saturday, coupled with a Texas A&M loss and a second loss suffered by the Clemson Tigers, Penn State managed to move up two spots in this week’s USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Penn State stayed behind the Iowa Hawkeyes, who moved up to No. 5 and remain the highest-ranked team in the Big Ten. There was no change at the top of the rankings with Alabama staying on top with 64 first-place votes and Georgia holding firm at No. 2 with one first-place vote. But Oregon and Oklahoma each swapped places after sluggish showings. The Ducks moved up to No. 3 after finding a way to put away a dreadful Arizona team and Oklahoma moved down to No. 4 after finding a way to win a defensive battle at home against West Virginia.

[lawrence-related id=7432,7412,7403,7401]

Penn State lost a quality win on its resume for now with Wisconsin falling out of the top 25 after imploding in Chicago against Notre Dame. But Auburn did move up a spot after avoiding a disastrous upset bid by Georgia State. Auburn moved up to No. 22.

Around the Big Ten in Week 4: Troubles and struggles in the B1G West

Aside from Iowa and Penn State, other Big Ten teams in this week’s USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll include No. 10 Ohio State (up two spots), No. 14 Michigan (up five), and No. 16 Michigan State (up five).

Here’s where Florida stands in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

The Gators moved up to No. 9 in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Florida avoided a letdown against Tennessee after taking the No. 1 team in the country to the wire the week before. The Volunteers put up a good fight, especially in the first half, but they couldn’t achieve sustainable ball movement, relying instead on a handful of inconsistent big plays.

Quarterback Emory Jones took another step forward in his development, and the run game was dominant yet again.

It was a very solid performance for the Gators, even if they were a bit sloppy to start. And with two teams in the top 10 losing in previous No. 5 Texas A&M and No. 7 Clemson, Florida is vaulting those teams into the top 10 in the latest update of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches poll, ranking No. 9.

UF is now the third-highest ranked SEC team behind No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Georgia.

With the win over the Vols, UF moves to 3-1 (1-1 SEC) on the season. Next up is its first conference road trip against a Kentucky team that tends to give Florida fits. In the Gators’ last trip to Lexington in 2019, quarterback Feleipe Franks suffered a season-ending ankle injury, prompting Kyle Trask to take over as the starting quarterback and begin his prolific run by leading a comeback against the Wildcats.
