After huge win, Oklahoma moves up in new USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

After a stunning come from behind win over the Longhorns, where do the Sooners land in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll?

It was a comeback for the ages as the Oklahoma Sooners battled back from as many as 21 points down to pull off an improbable win over the Texas Longhorns. “Sooner Magic” was alive and well on Saturday as the Sooners stormed back from a 28-7 deficit in the Red River Showdown to beat the Texas Longhorns in the final minutes of another thrilling game OU-Texas game.

With the win and losses by Alabama and Penn State, the Oklahoma Sooners move up two spots to number three in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Despite being undefeated, the Oklahoma Sooners had been losing ground in the polls after narrow wins to start the season against their FBS opponents. As low as No. 5 in last week’s Coaches Poll, the Sooners got another one-score win to move them to 6-0 in 2021 and in the top three in the latest poll.

In the loss, the Texas Longhorns dropped out of the poll for the second time this season. Oklahoma State, on a bye this week, stayed at 12 and remains the only other Big 12 team ranked.

After a loss to unranked Texas A&M, the Alabama Crimson Tide only fell back four spots to number five. Texas A&M rejoined the Top 25 after their thrilling win in College Station.

Oklahoma will face questions all week over who will start at quarterback when they take on the TCU Horned Frogs, but Caleb Williams proved himself capable of leading the Oklahoma Sooners offensive attack.

A look at the full coaches poll after this week’s slate of games.

Alabama outside of top four in USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Alabama takes hefty fall from the top in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Waking up on Sunday and the nightmare is still real for Alabama fans. For the first time in 19 games, Nick Saban’s squad has lost, getting outplayed by Texas A&M on Saturday night, 41-38.

Plenty of streaks came to an end as well. A former assistant coach has finally beaten Saban, alongside Alabama’s 100 game winning streak against unranked opponents. Not the situation Crimson Tide fans are used to being in.

With the loss, the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll has dropped Alabama outside the coveted top four and to No. 5. Georgia has taken over the top spot, followed by Iowa, Oklahoma, Cincinnati.

Texas A&M shot back up in the rankings, going to No. 18. Florida is one spot ahead, claiming the title of the highest-ranked two-loss team in the poll.

Dropping out is Auburn and Texas, with both losing to out-of-state rivals.

Where did Penn State drop in USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll after Week 6?

Where is Penn State ranked in the new USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll after the loss to Iowa?

As expected following a tough loss on the road this weekend, Penn State fell back a few spots in the updated USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. The good news is Penn State is still in the top 10 amid some reshuffling of the deck in the poll this week.

Penn State fell from No. 4 down to No. 8 in the fresh coaches poll on Sunday. Penn State fell behind Big Ten East foes Ohio State (No. 6) and Michigan (No. 7) as both the Buckeyes and Wolverines moved up one spot to take advantage of Penn State’s first stumble of the season. Iowa moved up to No. 2 following their victory over the Nittany Lions, taking full advantage of a surprising loss Saturday night by Alabama.

The Crimson Tide fell from the top of the coaches poll down to No. 5 after suffering a last-second loss at Texas A&M on Saturday night. Georgia took full control of the top spot in the coaches poll this week with 64 first-place votes. There was one first-place vote from the coaches for the Hawkeyes.

Joining the Hawkeyes, Buckeyes, Wolverines and Nittany Lions inside the top 10 this week is Michigan State. The undefeated Spartans moved into the top 10 by being bumped up two spots this week. Michigan State lept over Oregon, who was idle this week and fell to No. 10. Michigan State also moved into the top 10 after BYU fell out due to a loss at home to Boise State.

A former Penn State opponent, Auburn, fell out of the top 25 this week with their home loss to top-ranked Georgia.

Vandy win makes little difference in latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Florida moved up just one spot after the win over Vanderbilt.

Florida got back on the right track on Saturday, dealing a 42-0 shutout to the struggling Vanderbilt Commodores in Gainesville. But it wasn’t the sharpest performance from the Gators, who needed two missed kicks and a touchdown that was taken off the board under questionable circumstances to preserve the blanking.

UF will need to play better starting next week, when they travel to Baton Rouge to play an LSU team that appears to be in a downward spiral after falling to 3-3 this week. After that, it’s a matchup with Georgia, which is the new No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

The Vanderbilt win didn’t do much for Florida in the Coaches Poll. It moved up one spot from No. 18 to No. 17 after beating one of the worst teams in the Power Five. As far as the rest of the SEC goes, Alabama fell four spots to No. 5 after suffering an upset against unranked Texas A&M. The Aggies, in turn, are no longer absent from this list, jumping up to No. 18.

Kentucky, which remained undefeated with a 42-21 win over LSU in Lexington, moved up three spots to No. 11. The only other ranked SEC team is No. 19 Arkansas, which falls just behind the Gators and Texas A&M. Previous No. 19 Auburn dropped out after a 34-10 loss to Georgia.

Here’s the full Coaches Poll after Week 6.

Where LSU opponents rank in the week 6 USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

The updated USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches poll after week six action.

Another Saturday has come and gone, the LSU Tigers had an opportunity to knock off a top 25 team that came into the game undefeated. Unfortunately for the Bayou Bengals, the team was never in the game against the Kentucky Wildcats. Once they scored their first touchdown of the game, they led wire-to-wire. The Tigers were able to put points on the board but not until after UK built a 35-7 lead in the third quarter.

After another week of college football, it is time to look at the updated polls. USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll was released on Sunday. While the Tigers aren’t anywhere near being ranked after starting the year 3-3, we look at the top 25 and where the Tigers opponents are ranked heading into week seven.

A look at the full coaches poll after this week’s slate of games.

Rutgers has two upcoming opponents ranked in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Rutgers football has two upcoming opponents in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll (and one more receiving votes).

The good news for Rutgers football is that the murder’s row part of the schedule is nearly over. The sobering news is that this Saturday’s opponent continues to soar up the rankings.

Two weeks ago it was a 20-13 loss at Michigan, now No. 8 in the latest USA TODAYS Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. On Saturday it was a blowout loss to Ohio State, currently seventh in the same USA TODAY Poll. This Saturday it is Michigan State, up five spots and No. 11.

When head coach Greg Schiano likened the Big Ten schedule to the NFL, he really wasn’t kidding.

“Well, I think everybody understands that’s life in the Big Ten, right? Every week is a tremendous challenge,” Schiano said after the Ohio State loss.

“That’s why I liken it to the National Football League. It’s every week, you’ve got to strap it up and you’ve got to find a way. But now we’ve lost back-to-back ball games. So we need to stop that.”

Here’s a look at how Rutgers upcoming opponents are doing in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Auburn climbs into top-20 of latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll
