Trey Augustine, Team USA wins gold at world juniors

Trey Augustine wins his second straight gold medal with win over Finland on Sunday

Michigan State hockey was without star goaltender Trey Augustine, but for good reason, as he was with Team USA at the world junior championships. This was the third straight year he played with the American team, and it is now officially the third straight medal winning performance.

In an overtime thriller, USA knocked off Finland, 4-3 to take home their second consecutive gold medal. This is the first time in history that the Americans have won back to back gold medals at the world juniors.

Augustine is set to rejoin MSU in the coming days.

Wisconsin women’s hockey legend to be inducted to USA Hockey Hall of Fame

Wisconsin women’s hockey legend to be inducted to USA Hockey Hall of Fame

Wisconsin women’s hockey legend Brianna Decker will be inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame this year, per an announcement from USA Hockey on Thursday.

Decker will join Matt Cullen, Frederic McLaughlin, Kevin Stevens and the gold medal-winning 2002 Paralympic Sled Hockey Team as 2024 inductees this winter. Her induction will mark the first time a Wisconsin women’s hockey alum will enter the USA Hockey Hall of Fame.

As a Badger, Decker played four seasons in Madison under legendary head coach Mark Johnson from 2009-13. During her collegiate tenure, the Dousman, Wisconsin native helped guide Wisconsin to an NCAA Championship in 2011 and scored 115 goals, enough for No. 2 all-time in program history.

Decker also pocketed the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, the highest individual honor across women’s collegiate hockey and Western College Hockey Association Player of the Year nods as a junior in 2012.

Following her stint in Wisconsin, Decker played professionally in the National Women’s Hockey League and the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. She also earned a gold medal as a member of Team USA in 2018 and two silver medals in 2014 and 2022.

Decker was inducted into the UW Athletic Hall of Fame in 2023 and now contributes to bettering the next generation of hockey stars as an associate head coach at her alma mater.

The ceremony will take place on Dec. 4, 2024 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Notre Dame receives commitment from Youth Olympics gold medalist

Look out for this name in the future.

The interesting this about talented amateur hockey players is that they’re seemingly playing for a different team all the time. One of many example of that is [autotag]AJ Garcia[/autotag], who is fresh off winning a championship with the Chicago Mission and a gold medal with the U.S. at this year’s Youth Winter Olympics. Now, we know he’ll be heading to Notre Dame in the distant future:

Being that Garcia, a native of Romeoville, Illinois, only is 16, it will be a while before we see him in South Bend. Still, the fact that his next campaign will be with the U.S. National Team Development Program speaks volumes as to how much potential he has. Irish fans have reason to be excited about him.

Elsewhere in Irish hockey, the program has hired former Sacred Heart director of hockey operations [autotag]Jessica Thibault[/autotag] to the same role. The hire was announced by [autotag]Jeff Jackson[/autotag], who will retire as Irish coach after the upcoming season in favor of [autotag]Brock Sheahan[/autotag].

Team USA’s tying goal called back on controversial goaltender interference in World Junior semifinal against Canada

Was this goaltender interference?

No one knows what goaltender interference is anymore in hockey. The foul has plagued the NHL for years now, and it’s no stranger to rearing its head in international hockey too.

On Wednesday, the United States and Canada were playing in a highly-contested semifinal matchup in the 2023 World Junior tournament. The under-20 hockey tournament is a staple of the sport every holiday season, with Team USA and Canada often meeting in a clash of bitter rivals.

The United States originally held a 2-0 lead early on, but Canada battled back and eventually took the 3-2 lead themselves in the second period. Yet, with just under 13 minutes to play, Jackson Blake seemed to tie things up for the United States with a hard-fought goal in the blue paint.

Unfortunately for Team USA, Canada challenged the goal for goaltender interference and won, causing the goal to be disallowed. Canada then eventually doubled their lead on the United States, going into the third period with a 4-2 lead.

While a seemingly innocuous play, goaltender interference is stricter in international play than in the NHL rulebook. By international rules, Blake was not allowed to make any contact with the goaltender in his crease and even just getting in the way of Thomas Milic’s glove was a violation of the rule.

United States fans, however, didn’t see it that way as a key goal was called back for the red, white, and blue.

Canada gets its revenge against Team USA with dominant Olympic women’s hockey gold medal win

Canada gets its gold after besting the United States 3-2.

The United States’s bid for repeat women’s hockey gold medals at the Olympics is over.

On Thursday, Canada bested the United States — and got their long-awaited revenge — in the women’s hockey gold medal match 3-2 at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Coming into the tournament final, Canada had dominated the competition, outscoring opponents 54-8 and going fully undefeated en route to their fifth Olympic gold since 2002.

Sarah Nurse kicked off the scoring for Canada eight minutes into the game on a gorgeous set play off a face-off and the team never looked back, taking a 3-0 lead midway through the game. Hilary Knight opened the scoring for the United States in the final few minutes of the second on a great penalty kill effort, but outside of Amanda Kessel’s last-second tally in the final seconds of the game, Team USA could not find the equalizer.

Canadian legend — and perpetual thorn in the side of Americans for years — Marie-Philip Poulin was a major deciding factor in this one, scoring two goals en route to her third Olympic gold. Also making major strides at these Games was Nurse, who broke the Olympic record for most points in a single tournament (18).

Though there’s no shame in winning silver at these Olympic games, it’s a tough pill to swallow for Team USA against their bitter rivals. This Canadian team is the most dominant we’ve seen in years, but it did not feel like the United States was coached to their full potential, between the benching of key defensive players and having an abysmal power play percentage with such talent on their roster.

Here’s how the hockey world reacted to yet another intense gold medal bout between the United States and Canada.
