Nigeria played the United States in an exhibition tune-up game in Las Vegas July 18, and the Nigerians fell by a 93-62 score. As such, they’ll be heavy underdogs in Tuesday’s group play opener.

Team USA is led by five-time Olympians Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, as well as WNBA standouts Brittney Griner and A’ja Wilson. It’s a star-studded roster which appears primed and ready to clean up against Nigeria, and the rest of the world.

The game is expected to be so lopsided that you cannot even bet Team USA on the money line, and it would be throwing money away backing Nigeria (+1600) for an upset. It isn’t happening.

Against the spread (ATS)

NIGERIA +30.5 (-120) lost by 31 points in the exhibition game in Vegas. As it stands, the books have set the line with a nearly identical number.

You can expect the African side to fall behind by quite a bit early on but chip away late as the USA takes its foot off the gas a bit. Nigeria will grab the backdoor cover.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 153.5 (-110) is the slight lean.

We had a total of 155 points in that Vegas exhibition, and that would have cashed the Over. Expect the nerves to be a little more on edge early on in this game, now that it is for real and no longer just a practice game.

Team USA went a perfect 3-for-3 in group play, topping Haiti 1-0, then spanking Martinique 6-1 before easing by Canada 1-0 in the decisive match last Sunday.

Jamaica opened with a solid 2-0 victory over Suriname but was a tad bit shaky in a narrow 2-1 win over Guadeloupe. It ended up on the short end of a 1-0 loss to Costa Rica to finish second in the group.

USA 2, Jamaica 0

Money line (ML)

USA (-225) is the play even though it’s a little more expensive than I generally care to play on a money line wager. However, the Reggae Boyz are up against it playing in Arlington against a pro-USA crowd which will give the Americans all the energy they need, and then some.

This will be a decisive effort for the home side, and I also like USA TO WIN TO NIL (+120).

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 2.5 (-115) is a good play, as I expect Team USA to post the clean sheet. Jamaica didn’t impress me one bit during group play. In fact, I feel as though it has gotten sloppier as the tournament has gone on.

If there is a concern here, it is a late third goal in regular or stoppage time with Jamaica pinching up out of desperation.

France will not be overlooked by Team USA. While the current roster of Americans had nothing to do with it, the French dispatched the USA at the World Cup. Nicolas Batum, Evan Fournier and Rudy Gobert are all legit NBA talents and threats to give the Americans fits.

There seemed to be a lack of chemistry with the United States during exhibition play, as it fell to both Nigeria and Australia before eeking out a win over Spain prior to the Olympics. We’ll see if it can turn it on now that the games count for real.

USA (-700) will cost you seven times your potential return, and that’s extremely risky business given what we saw from the Americans leading up to the Olympics. It looked anything like a Dream Team, but more like a nightmare at times.

France is a tempting play at  +475, but you have to believe USA will turn it on now that the games matter.

Against the spread (ATS)

FRANCE +12.5 (-115) is the play , as Batum, Fournier and Gobert are legit NBA players who will give this team plenty of production. France should be able to keep this game within single digits.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 176.5 (-115) is the slight lean.

As mentioned above, France has some quality NBA bigs, led by Gobert, the NBA’s 2020-21 Defensive Player of the Year. This won’t be confused with a pre-shot clock era game, but the defense will still be good enough as these teams feel each other out early.

CONCACAF Gold Cup: Canada at USA odds, picks and prediction

As the Gold Cup’s Group Stage winds down, USA (2-0-0) will take on Canada (2-0-0). The match is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. ET, and will be held at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan. Both nations have already advanced to the knockout round as both Group B opponents, Haiti and Martinique, stood no chance. This will be the first real test for each side.

The first pick in the MLS SuperDraft in 2015, Canada’s F Cyle Larin has been unstoppable scoring three goals in Canada’s first two games. MF Stephen Eustáquio has chipped in two goals as well.

Canada took down Haiti 4-1 and Martinique 4-1. They’ll be battling the USA this time, though. Atop of the division, USA had an unimpressive 1-0 victory over Haiti then blasted Martinique 6-1.

Orlando City F Daryl Dike has been the star for the USA so far, but can he contribute against a quality side? Can their defense hold up? Both questions will be answered in their last Group Stage match.

Prediction

USA 2, Canada 1

Money line (ML)

BET on USA (-150) as they’re the deeper and more talented side. Canada hasn’t played many quality opponents. A relatively young team with 13 MLS players on it, Canada has talent on their roster.

However, the USA is coming in with many of the top MLS players. They should have a chip on their shoulder knowing these games could be their route to playing more premier matches with their country.

Dropping 6 on Martinique with their opponent’s only goal being a penalty kick, USA’s defense has looked solid. As with Canada, they haven’t really been tested.

I’d put my money on that USA’s defense led by MLS Defender of the Year Walker Zimmerman. With Dike up top, they should be able to take care of business.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET on the OVER 2.5 (-120) because, despite USA’s solid defensive play, they’ve taken on two subpar opponents. Haiti and Martinique never truly challenged the USA. Canada will.

As noted, they have a slew of MLS players and a few playing in Europe. Larin and Eustáquio should be able to pressure USA’s back line enough to get at least one in, especially considering how dominant they’ve looked through the first couple of games.

Considering USA is also scoring over three goals per game, I’d expect the Over to hit and at least three goals to be scored.

The USA isn’t bringing its best squad to the Gold Cup, but it is likely to be the favorite. F Daryl Dike will be a force forand this will be a trial run for the team looking to add to its pool of talent.

As for Haiti, it played two games this month, winning them by a combined score of 10-2. Prior to those two, Haiti lost back-to-back games to Canada, which is also in Group B.

BET on USA TO WIN BOTH HALVES (-150) because it’s the better team and should get the job done.

With MF Paul Arriola and MF Kellyn Acosta, USA is going to have some experience on its side. That should be enough to get the job done.

It’s tough to examine this USA team, but it has the talent and experience in every position group with up-and-coming prospects. Haiti should put up some fight but not enough to put any pressure on the USA.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET OVER 3.5 (+110) as the goals should be flowing in this one. Haiti has shown an ability to put the ball in the back of the net over its last few matches.

While it’ll be taking on a much tougher USA side, Haiti should be able to manage at least 1 goal. F Duckens Nazon has scored 3 goals in Haiti’s last two matches.

USA F Gyasi Zardes should help his side accrue some goals.
