Why Seahawks QB Geno Smith is Seattle’s most important free agent

Taking a look at why quarterback Geno Smith is the Seattle Seahawks’ most important unrestricted free agent.

The 2022 NFL season still isn’t in the books and fans of every team except the two in the Super Bowl are already looking ahead to the start of free agency and the new league year.

Cody Benjamin over at CBS Sports took a hard look at all 32 clubs to decide which players each team could not afford to lose during free agency. Not surprisingly, quarterback Geno Smith was his pick for the Seahawks.

“One of the trickiest evaluations of this year’s available veteran QBs, Smith looked like a genuinely different man for much of 2022, showcasing poise and decisiveness that was never apparent early in his career,” Benjamin writes. “Down the stretch, he was far more prone to forced throws, and Seattle’s draft capital suggests a new face of the franchise could — and should — be on the way. Still, as a potential placeholder, you can do quite a bit worse. His familiarity with the system is a bonus.”

After signing only a one-year contract with Seattle last offseason, Smith will become an unrestricted free agent this March if he and the Seahawks aren’t able to reach a new deal.

Smith has proven he’s worthy of being a starting quarterback in the NFL and will likely demand he’s paid what he’s due. The Seahawks’ front office and Smith’s camp are in for some interesting negotiations in the near future.

Pete Carroll on Seahawks QB Geno Smith: ‘He better come back’

Coach Pete Carroll is hoping that quarterback Geno Smith remains with the Seattle Seahawks after only signing a one-year last offseason.

Quarterback Geno Smith signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks last offseason and without a new contract, Smith is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the start of the new league year.

“I mean he better come back,” coach Pete Carroll said Sunday when asked about Smith’s status for the future. “Obviously, I want the best for him, and hopefully we can have that conversation in exit meetings; we’re still alive right now, we still have a chance. But he’s played phenomenal.”

Smith wrapped up the regular season having connected on 399 passes of 572 attempted with 11 interceptions and 30 touchdowns. His final completion rating of the year  . . . a whopping 69.8%. Smith has definitely made plenty of mistakes and the Seahawks could look to draft a young QB of the future, but it seems worthwhile at this point to at least explore a new deal.

“He’s put himself in a great position,” Carroll conceded. “I’m grateful he got his opportunity. He took advantage of it and he’s playing great. He was able to go out there and break some records today.

“It’s just great for him, he’s a great person, great dude.”

But for now, the Seahawks have a playoff game to focus on. Seattle heads down to the Bay Area to battle the 49ers this Saturday.

Seahawks cornerback D.J. Reed to sign with New York Jets

Seattle Seahawks free-agent cornerback D.J. Reed is set to sign with the New York Jets on a three-year deal.

Reed, 25, entered the league when he was selected by the 49ers in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft out of Kansas State. He played for two years in San Francisco before he was waived in August 2020 with a non-football injury designation. He was then claimed by the Seahawks off of waivers the following day.

Starting 14 games of 14 games played last season, Reed logged 64 tackles, 10 passes defensed and two interceptions on the year.

Grading RB Chris Carson re-signing with the Seahawks: B

The Seattle Seahawks have earned themselves a B grade for re-signing starting running back Chris Carson.

On Friday, the Seahawks re-committed to their philosophy of balanced offense by re-signing running back Chris Carson to what was originally reported as a three-year, $24.625 million deal with voidable years.

The mechanics of the deal are a bit more team-friendly.

Since he was drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL draft out of Oklahoma State, Carson has been almost a cult hero among both Seahawks Twitter — which is something of a legend in its own right — and fantasy football Twitter. Of course, back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons might also have something to do with that, which Carson posted in both 2018 and 2019. Back during that 2019 campaign, Carson ran for 1,230 yards on 278 carries, and also caught 37 passes for 266 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

There are some concerns with Carson going forward. First there is the injury history. Carson’s 2019 season was cut short with a hip fracture, and he also missed time this past year with a sprained foot. Then there are the fumble woes. This dates back to his time with Oklahoma State, where he was benched for losing the ball, and continues into his NFL days. Back in 2019 Carson fumbled seven times — including four lost fumbles — and was also inconsistent at the mesh point with quarterback Russell Wilson, which led to some fumbles that were charged to the quarterback.

Those two factors were going to play in any negotiation this offseason. But the opportunity to re-add a running back with a pair of 1,000-yard seasons is going to intrigue most front offices, and no front office more than Seattle’s.

Are running back Chris Carson and the Dolphins close to a deal?

Seattle Seahawks unrestricted free agent running back Chris Carson could be close to reaching a deal with the Miami Dolphins.

The Seattle Seahawks have already seen one of their top unrestricted free agents (Shaquill Griffin) lured away by another team in the last couple of days and now they may be on the verge of losing starting running back Chris Carson as well.

Carson and the Dolphins are close to reaching a deal, according to the folks over at the Pro Football Network.

Carson’s backup from last season – Carlos Hyde – has also found a new home with the Jaguars, leaving Seattle potentially thin at the position.

There could be a bit of a twist to this story, as Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times is reporting the Carson to Miami news is not accurate, so stay tuned!

Seahawks earn B-plus grade for addition of tight end Gerald Everett

The Seattle Seahawks have earned themselves a B-plus grade from the folks at Touchdown Wire for the signing of tight end Gerald Everett.

The Seattle Seahawks have likely found a replacement for veteran tight end Greg Olsen, who retired at the end of last season. Seattle will be signing former Los Angeles Rams tight end Gerald Everett to the roster.

Shortly after the move was announced, the chatter commenced about Everett’s value and the worthiness of the deal. Similar to Olsen in 2020, Everett, whose contract is for one-year, can earn up to $7 million.

For their efforts in scooping up the ex-NFC West foe, the Seahawks received a B+ grade from the folks over at Touchdown Wire, who called the deal a “steal.”

“Everett’s movement skills and quickness make him a matchup nightmare against linebackers, and given that Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay found a variety of ways to ensure that Everett would get favorable matchups this season, and then exploit them after the snap,” writes Mark Schofield. “Everett’s ability was a big reason that Los Angeles used a lot more 12 offensive personnel the past few seasons, including using that package 29% of the time this past year.”

Everett will find some familiarity in Seattle under the tutelage of the Seahawks coaching staff, featuring offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and run-game coordinator Andy Dickerson, both formerly in Los Angeles.
