Celtics go for a floor general in new 2023 NBA draft mock

Still pretty raw and prone to turning the ball over, he’s still a name to watch.

While it might seem an odd time to think about the 2023 NBA draft with the Boston Celtics playing the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs, some members of the Celtics organization are furiously preparing for when their second-round pick is on the clock.

Cody Taylor of Rookie Wire, our sister site, put together a full post-NCAA tournament mock draft. We dropped in to see what prospect Boston would take with the 35th pick of the draft owed them by the Portland Trail Blazers, barring surprises from the Houston Rockets’ draft lottery.

Taylor sees the Celtics taking point guard Marcus Sasser out of Houston, an interesting take given Boston’s backcourt already has prospects a-plenty.

But if Payton Pritchard were no longer with the organization or the team cut bait on some of its other nascent floor generals developing overseas, we can see the logic.

A 6-foot-2 senior who put up 16.8 points, 2.8 boards, 3.1 assists, and an impressive 1.6 steals per game in his final season at the NCAA level, his volume 3-point shooting hints at a solid if undersized role as a backup 3-and-D prospect.

Still pretty raw and prone to turning the ball over, he’s certainly a name to watch, though barring a player who might have an elite skill to develop slipping this late, we’d be fine with such a selection.

Chargers interview two candidates for defensive coordinator job

The Chargers have a void to fill with their defensive coordinator position left by Renaldo Hill.

The Chargers have a void to fill with their defensive coordinator position left by Renaldo Hill, who joined the Dolphins to be their passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach.

On Wednesday, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported that Los Angeles interviewed Patriots defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington and the University of Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk for the job.

Covington has been with New England since 2017 and has coached the team’s defensive line since 2020. He started as a coaching assistant for two seasons and coached the outside linebackers in 2019.

Belk has been with Houston since 2019. He entered the program as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach. He was promoted to associate head coach in 2020 and became defensive coordinator in 2021. He’s previously worked for West Virginia, Alabama, and Valdosta State.

Initially, after it was announced that Hill was leaving for Miami, it was reported that the plan was for defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley to be promoted to the Chargers’ defensive coordinator. But it appears they are still doing their homework.

Cowboys NFL draft profile: Houston CB Marcus Jones is small but explosive

The diminutive corner plays big in the return game and has forced his share of turnovers. Tyler Browning (@DiabeticTyler) looks into whether it will play in the pros.

Let’s talk about another corner the Cowboys could have interest in. This time let’s keep it in Texas, and take a look at the University of Houston’s Marcus Jones. Jones was a prolific returner as well as a productive corner for the Cougars. Over his career he amassed nine career interceptions for 134 return yards and a score, as well as 31 pass deflections. That, combined with 73 kick returns for 2,075 yards and six touchdowns and 63 punt returns for 881 yards and three touchdowns make him a dynamic threat who can influence two of the game’s three phases.

His career accolades include 2020 Phil Steele All-America First Team (Punt Returner), 2020 FWAA All-America First Team (Punt Returner), 2020 PFF All-America Fourth Team (Cornerback), 2020 American Athletic All-Conference First Team (Return Specialist), and more.

He fills up the stat sheet, but barely fills out a uniform. Can he cut it in the pros? Let’s take a look at his film to find out.

Dolphins have presence at University of Houston Pro Day

The Dolphins are making draft preparations.

With the NFL draft less than a month away, colleges are hosting their Pro Days, giving their players an opportunity to showcase their talents to NFL scouts and talent evaluators.

The Miami Dolphins don’t have a draft pick in the first two rounds after they traded those selections away as part of the deal in acquiring wide receiver Tyreek Hill from the Kansas City Chiefs, but that won’t stop them from taking a peek at some draft prospects.

According to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, Dolphins assistant general manager Marvin Allen is in attendance at the University of Houston’s Pro Day on Friday.

The Cougars have a few players that are expected to go in the middle rounds of this year’s draft, including defensive tackle Logan Hall, edge David Anenih and cornerback Marcus Johnson.

Miami may be looking at one of these three or any of the potential late-round prospects who could help add depth to this roster.

Former Houston Cougars coach Bill Yeoman dies at 92

Bill Yeoman, an offensive genius and creator of the Veer offense, has died at 92.

Bill Yeoman, an offensive genius, has died at 92. The former University of Houston coach was the father of the Veer offense and once coached a Cougars team that scored 100 points. In one game.

His son, Bill Jr., said Yeoman died of pneumonia and kidney failure.

Yeoman was hired as head coach at Houston in 1962 after serving as an assistant coach at Michigan State for eight seasons. He led the Cougars until 1986 and was known as the winningest coach in school history.

The game against Tulsa at the Astrodome was unforgettable. And not because Dr. Phil McGraw was on the Golden Hurricane. Oh, and country music star Larry Gatlin scored a touchdown for the Cougars.

The date was Nov. 23, 1968. The final: Houston 100, Tulsa 6.

“I even know the play I scored on,” Larry Gatlin said in a 1998 interview for the Daily Cougar. “It was 3rd-and-12 on the 26-yard line. I was in the game in place of Elmo (Wright) at wideout on the right side. The play was ’53 R Out.’

Gatlin subbed for Wright because the score was 86-6. It was late in the fourth quarter of what would become the biggest blowout in the modern era of college football.

That made it 93-6. Just went the century mark seemed out of reach, Tulsa punted.

With 30 seconds left in the game, senior Mike Simpson took the boot, broke free and returned it 60 yards for the final TD. The score was now 99-6.

Terry Lieweke hit the PAT, which created issues for the NCAA, which realized its stats programs could not process 100 points in a game. They’d been set up to accept scores up to 99 points.

Houston scored the last 10 times they had the ball. In all, the Cougars scored 14 touchdowns. 13 extra points (Lieweke missed one in the third quarter). And a field goal.

“Coach Yeoman was a leader and visionary in our game,” current Houston coach Dana Holgorsen said in a statement. “Not only was he a Hall of Fame coach, but also he brought our program to national prominence during his tenure. His legacy will live on in our program and will stand the test of time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, former players and coaches.”

Yeoman was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Houston suspends all voluntary workouts amid COVID-19 outbreak

The University of Houston suspended voluntary workouts for all student-athletes immediately after a COVID-19 outbreak infected six athletes.

We’ve mentioned time and again here that college football being played in 2020 is by no means a guarantee, despite how excited we all are for the potential for it.

Earlier this week the NCAA took a bit step in getting the necessary action going in order for college football to start on time.

Friday didn’t bring as good of news to the national college football picture however as the University of Houston announced they’re suspending all voluntary workouts for student-athletes effective immediately because of a recent outbreak on their athletic teams.

The University didn’t give details as to what sport those who tested positive play, not that it really matters.  If it were six women’s basketball players would it somehow make you feel better about football players not getting infected?

Didn’t think so.

Let’s just hope these cases are more of the exception than the rule and that suspending workouts isn’t a nationwide thing for NCAA teams a week or two from now.

Notre Dame players have begun arriving to campus to begin a ten day quarantine at The Morris Inn before voluntary workouts begin June 22.

Rome Shubert, who survived a gun wound, has committed to the University of Houston for baseball

He survived a gunshot wound to the head when his high school was targeted in a shooting. Now, Rome Shubert has decided on the University of Houston for college baseball.

A Santa Fe High School athlete who survived a gunshot wound to the head when his school was targeted in the 2018 mass shooting has committed to the University of Houston baseball team.

Rome Shubert officially signed the papers on Tuesday and posted photos on Twitter.

“Blessed to be signed to the University of Houston,” he wrote. “Can’t wait to continue to play baseball at the next level. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. Go Coogs!”

Shubert was one of 13 people injured in the May 2018 tragedy, and told ABC13 that a bullet went through the back of his head and came out.

The signing isn’t the first milestone in his recovery. Earlier this year, Shubert won a playoff game for the Santa Fe Indians.
