Final Fantasy and Uncharted headline PS Plus games for March

Sony announced the full list of PS Plus games for March, with Uncharted, Final Fantasy, Ape Escape, and Ghostwire leading the pack

Sony announced the full list of PS Plus games for March, with Uncharted, Final Fantasy, Ape Escape, and Ghostwire: Tokyo leading the pack. The PS Plus games for Premium and Extra subscribers will be available to download starting March 21, 2023, and as always, they stay in your account so long as your subscription to that tier remains active.

First up is Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves collection, a two-game bundle featuring Uncharted 4 – the end of Nathan Drake’s saga – and The Lost Legacy, which follows series deuteragonist Chloe Frazier on a quest to recover important artifacts.

Tchia, a 3D exploration game from new studio Awaceb, joins the lineup on its launch day and sends you across a beautiful, stylized island chain based on the team’s home of New Caledonia. If you want something a bit less peaceful, though, Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six Siege and Tango Gameworks’ Ghostwire Tokyo are also on the list.

Square Enix has a hefty presence in March, with Life Is Strange 2 and Life Is Strange: True Colors in the mix, alongside NEO: The World Ends With You, and Final Fantasy Type-0, the military school spinoff where a chocobo bleeds to death in the first five minutes. Nothing says “war is cruel” like watching your fantasy bird friend die, but if you prefer your birds alive and honking, you may want to check out the indie hit Untitled Goose Game for some more laid-back, mischievous fun.

Premium subscribers get three new classic games in March: Ridge Racer Type 4, Syphon Filter, and Ape Escape 2. Maybe. The description Sony provided for Ape Escape 2 is actually for Ape Academy 2. That might actually be what you’re getting and not the original Ape Escape 2, though released for the PS1, as the listing says.

The PlayStation Blog has the full lineup.

Neil Druckmann says Naughty Dog is finished with Uncharted

There will apparently be no new Uncharted games moving forward, as Neil Druckmann says the team is moving on from the action game series

There will apparently be no new Uncharted games moving forward, as Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann says the team is moving on from the action game series. Druckmann made the comments in an interview with BuzzFeed, where he said the team doesn’t feel like a new Uncharted sequel is necessary.

“For us, Uncharted was insanely successful – Uncharted 4 was one of our best-selling games – and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done,” Druckmann said. “We’re moving on.”

He said Naughty Dog is in a “very priveleged” position with Sony, where PlayStation doesn’t demand sequels for the sake of profit or keeping a franchise alive. Instead, the team is allowed to do what they want.

That same logic means that The Last of Us Part 3 isn’t set in stone either, despite Druckmann teasing the game practically since The Last of Us 2 released. Druckmann said he’s only open to the idea on one condition: “if [the team] can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love.”

“With The Last of Us, it’s up to us whether we want to continue it or not,” Druckmann said. “If we can’t come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end.”

Except it’s not entirely the end, as Naughty Dog is also working on a standalone The Last of Us multiplayer game that reportedly has a strong story component.

Druckmann didn’t say whether other studios under the PlayStation umbrella could pick up the Uncharted series with different characters, as Legacy of Thieves does, for future releases. Whatever the case, Sony may be planning more Uncharted movies, as it called the first one the start of a “successful franchise” after its box office success.

Uncharted creator Amy Hennig to head up new Star Wars game

Uncharted lead writer Amy Hennig is returning to the Star Wars universe with Skydance New Media for a new cinematic action-adventure game.

A brand new Star Wars game is coming from Skydance New Media, led by division president Amy Hennig, creative director and lead writer for the first three Uncharted games.

This is the second Star Wars project that Hennig has been involved with following the cancellation of Visceral Games’ Project Ragtag in 2019. Hennig left Visceral Games and EA that year to join Skydance New Media.

[mm-video type=video id=01fzx699tn26hfy1e65w playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fzx699tn26hfy1e65w/01fzx699tn26hfy1e65w-d677acca1225decad07ff99a835f9910.jpg]

“I’ve often described how seeing Star Wars in 1977 essentially rewired my 12-year-old brain, shaping my creative life and future indelibly,” said Hennig. “I’m elated to be working with Lucasfilm Games again to tell interactive stories in this galaxy that I love.”

The new game is confirmed to be a cinematic action-adventure game, which aptly describes the Uncharted titles that Hennig has worked on in the past, though there’s no estimated release date for the new Star Wars game yet.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working again with Amy. She and the Skydance New Media team have the talent and ambition to create a unique Star Wars adventure,” said Lucasfilm Games vice president, Douglas Reilly. “Their vision for making inviting, cinematic interactive entertainment makes this collaboration very exciting. We’re working hard with their team of experienced and talented developers, and we’re looking forward to sharing more with Star Wars fans when the time is right.”

Nothing else is currently known about the new project and Skydance New Media is a new studio that has not released a game yet, though in late 2021 the team confirmed production had begun on a Marvel title, with Hennig then saying; “I can’t imagine a better partner than Marvel for our first game.”

Hennig is joined at Skydance New Media by executive vice president and GM Julian Beak, who has worked on Battlefield: Hardline, Need for Speed (2015), and LittleBigPlanet Karting among many more. “We couldn’t be happier to be working with Lucasfilm Games,” said Beak. “We look forward to taking fans on an epic journey with this Star Wars action-adventure title.”

Star Wars fans will be rewarded heavily in the coming years. We know that Jedi: Fallen Order 2 is in production along with two other games at Respawn Entertainment, and gamers recently got treated to Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. But Battlefront 3 isn’t happening, unfortunately.

Sony says Uncharted is ‘a new hit movie franchise’ after the film rakes in $139 million globally

Tom Holland continues to be a box office draw.

Nobody was expecting big-time box office numbers from Uncharted, but Sony Pictures claim the movie is an enormous success.

A report from Deadline states that the rip-roaring adventure film is doing much better during its theatrical run than many were predicting. Early estimates put Uncharted at around $30 million domestically over a four-day period, but the movie wound up raking in $51 million, sending its worldwide revenue up to $139 million. Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman reportedly sent a company-wide memo celebrating Uncharted’s success.

“With over [$100 million] in box office worldwide in just one weekend, and a 90% positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Uncharted is a new hit movie franchise for the company,” Rothman said. “This marks a great victory for every single division of the company, as the film was our first major production entirely shut down by the advent of Covid, yet we persevered to complete a picture the audience loves and marketed and distributed it with strategic verve worldwide, despite the pandemic.”

It probably helps that Tom Holland’s star power is at an all-time high after Spider-Man: No Way Home, though he said filming Uncharted was brutal by comparison.Sony releasing the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection around the same time as the movie likely did wonders as well. Or maybe it was the collaboration with Fortnite that put Uncharted over, who knows!

Nolan North voicing Nathan Drake in Uncharted audiobook

In a twist, the voice actor’s playing the role he originated once again.

In a bizarre twist of fate, Nolan North, best-known for voicing Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series, is once again reprising his role for the audiobook novelization of the upcoming film adaptation, Variety reported Wednesday.

In the film, however, Drake is played by a markedly younger (no offense, Mr. North) Tom Holland, so North is playing his own character via Tom Holland’s interpretation. Instead of doing an impersonation of Tom Holland’s version of his character, North seems to have more or less settled for doing the voice he’s provided since 2007.

“I got to do Antonio Banderas, a little bit of a Mark Wahlberg and put on my own Boston accent a little bit, and then Nathan Drake. I didn’t do Tom Holland, though,” North said via Variety. “I kind of just did me. I tried to young him up a little bit.”

North isn’t stopping at reclaiming his role though, and is voicing the entirety of the audiobook, which will be released on Feb. 22, a few days after the Feb. 18 release of the long-in-gestation video game adaptation. The film, an origin story that deviates from the games and pulls from various of them for references, also features Mark Wahlberg as Drake’s mentor Victor Sullivan, an unlikely father figure for Drake that brings levity and heart to the series. Antonio Banderas also stars as an entirely new villain named Moncada, and Sophia Ali plays Chloe Frazer, one of Drake’s love interests in the Uncharted video games.

The Uncharted movie has been an arduous task, beginning development in 2008 before being handed to director after director and finally landing on Rubin Fleischer, director of 2018’s Venom, to shoot throughout 2020. The journey has also been a rough one for Holland too, who’s evidently been pelted by blue cubes in the filming process and claims the movie “broke” him. Let’s hope the guy gets some rest while he pitches his Jak and Daxter movie. In the meantime, I think North is probably raring to do those stunts himself.

The Uncharted movie gets one last trailer

A thief’s origin.

There’s not much time left until Uncharted  hits theaters, and Sony Pictures wants everyone to know it.

In what is probably Uncharted’s  final trailer, we get a clearer look at what the story entails. Much like Paramount’s Halo TV seriesUncharted isn’t following any of the plotlines from the games. Instead, it’s a prequel explaining how Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) came to be the dashing rogue we all know and love. Loads of  bad video game adaptations  deviate from the source material, so hopefully, this one isn’t following suit.

Check out the last Uncharted  trailer for yourself below, or head over to YouTube for a high-quality mirror  here.

Filming Uncharted  was brutal  for Tom Holland, evident by all those  giant blue cubes  beating the actor up. Though if nothing else, moviegoers are probably in for loads of quality stuns and set pieces. It’s fitting since Uncharted  has always cribbed from classic films like Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Coinciding with this trailer is the release of the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves  collection  on PS5, which brings together Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End  and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy  into  one beautiful package. Anyone with  PS4 files data can transfer  their data to PS5 too.

Uncharted is coming out on Feb. 18 exclusively in theaters.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection review – Nathan Drake at 60fps? Yes, please

It’s more of a next-gen upgrade that slightly touches up the visuals of some of the best PS4 games.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection brings Nathan Drake and the Uncharted franchise to PS5 for the first time, with an updated version of A Thief’s End, and its spin-off, The Lost Legacy. It’s not a proper remaster – more of a paid next-gen upgrade that slightly touches up the visuals of some of the best PS4 games.

Considering the incoming Uncharted movie with MCU’s Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, and Antonio Banderas on its way, the collection makes business sense. In fact, you get a ticket for the film with your purchase, allowing you to see Nathan Drake’s origin story as you wave goodbye to him in the games. But is the collection worth the price of admission?

[mm-video type=video id=01fqmhspcsm008ja7k8e playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fqmhspcsm008ja7k8e/01fqmhspcsm008ja7k8e-28c1fd74a117a5ee1988272e9ff1e908.jpg]

Both Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy came out at a time when PlayStation exclusives were starting to move from linear designs to smaller open-world-like sandbox titles. Naughty Dog managed to alternate between exploration of semi open-world areas and the high-octane blockbuster moments the Uncharted series is known for: Bad Boys 2-esque chase sequences, grappling from the back of a runaway train, and shimmying over terrifying chasms – it’s all here, and it still looks close to photorealistic despite originally launching last-gen.

The grappling hook did a lot for Uncharted 4, opening its playspaces up for more combat and exploration opportunities. Back in the day, it might have just looked like a checkbox to justify another sequel, but it’s actually a class act in design that truly enriches the game and allows you to appreciate the vastness of its gorgeous environments.

Looking back on its open-world-like Madagascar, you can see how Uncharted 4 shaped the Santa Monica developer and the rest of PlayStation Studios’ modus operandi

These days, these semi-open worlds are everywhere – even over on Xbox in Gears of War 5 – but back in 2016 it was a trailblazing approach. Naughty Dog had found the perfect middle ground between the linear action sequences it was known for with allowing the player to feel like an actual explorer – key, you’d think, for a game about being a treasure hunter. This is further explored in The Lost Legacy, which is basically an extension of that level, and you’d later see The Last of Us Part II take the concept a step further still in its downtown Seattle hub.

Despite how influential the game was, you’ll notice at least two things that clearly show Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy’s age. Moving around with Nate is a bit clunky by today’s standards, both in climbing and changing direction on the run. Moreover, the relative emptiness of that Madagascar level makes it almost feel like a prototype for The Last of Us Part II, whose level of detail is nowhere to be found here, and not just because this is a barebones remaster.

It’s instantly clear that A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy don’t need full remasters just yet, however – vistas, character models, lighting, and animations still look great, six years on. Coming out towards the end of PS4’s lifespan, it pushed Sony’s then-latest machine to its limits, and makes me excited about what Naughty Dog will be able to do on PS5.

This package features several different graphics options, the first being a 30fps mode like the original games but in a native 4K resolution. Most importantly, though, there’s a 60fps mode that lowers resolution down to 1440p, but without visibly losing definition. This mode feels like the way Uncharted should have always played. 60fps is also unlocked through the cutscenes, which now feel as natural and smooth as they could possibly be. A third mode brings in a 120fps frame rate, going for 1080p.

Another new feature is the introduction of super-fast loading times thanks to the PS5’s SSD unit. Entering a game from the main menu, both for a new game or loading a save, only takes a few seconds now. Transitioning between cutscenes and gameplay has always been instant, so it’s nice to be able to get right back into the action when you die, too.

Similarly, you’ll be surprised by how realistic 3D audio is. Especially in the first few hours, you’ll find yourself turning around because you’ll hear people talking from your back, as this setting really gives the games a sense of spatiality during dialogue, shooting, and even stealth sections they didn’t have before.

Finally, the DualSense controller is also fully supported. Haptic feedback doesn’t provide a memorable difference compared to the original rumble, while adaptive triggers are something you’ll encounter a lot during gameplay. Every bullet has ‘weight’ now, with the right trigger opposing resistance when shooting, and the left feeling heavier when aiming. As in Deathloop, it’s always fun to notice the trigger jams when ammo is spent. It’s definitely one of the most fascinating among PS5’s features, but it’s also one of the most controversial as it can lead to fatigue over longer sessions. Uncharted won’t push you to deactivate it, like I had to in Far Cry 5, but it can sometimes throw off your aim, which is already a weak point in the series.

Legacy of Thieves Collection is a fairly decent next-gen upgrade, and it’s nice that owners of the original games are allowed to upgrade for “only” $10. But this is still a cost that players on other platforms and even from the same developer (look at The Last of Us Part II, for example) have not been required to spend on similar, if not identical, updates.

On top of that, it’s worth noting that PS5 Digital Edition’s owners are not eligible for the $10 upgrade, and the same goes for PlayStation Plus subscribers that have downloaded Uncharted 4 back when it was included in the monthly selection of free games.

So, if you’ve not played Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy, this is something that might interest you, as these two games are still excellent gameplay-wise and look gorgeous. It’s just a shame playing an amazing game at 60fps is locked behind a paywall.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves on PS5 will let players transfer PS4 save data and trophies

No need to keep that PS4 hooked up.

The Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves  collection is coming out this week, and your old PS4 data will still be worth something on PS5.

On Monday, PlayStation confirmed that save data and trophies from the PS4 versions of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End  and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy  will work on PS5 (thanks, VGC). You’ll need to use the cloud storage feature on  PS Plus  to do so, though.

Anyone who owns Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End  and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy  on PS4 can upgrade to the PS5 versions for an additional $10 at release. In a somewhat strange move, Sony says that upgrades will require the PS4 disk to be inserted into the PS5 to play Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves. Obviously, the PS5 digital console owners won’t be able to take advantage of this deal.

It’s good that some of  the PS4’s best games  are making their way onto PS5, even if it’s a shame that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’s  multiplayer isn’t part of the package.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves  is coming to PS5 on Jan. 28, 2022, and the PC version will arrive  sometime later this year. Sony’s done a great job with PC ports as of late if God of War  is any indication.

Tom Holland gets beat up by giant blue cubes in Uncharted

A tough shoot indeed.

We’ve already heard about how Uncharted  nearly broke Tom Holland, but now there’s video proof of his soon-to-be-legendary tumbles.

In a new featurette, the Spider-Man: No Way Home  star talks about how physically demanding Uncharted  was to film. Unlike Spider-Man, Holland did the vast majority of his stunt work, mainly because he wasn’t wearing a mask. Every on-screen thwack and summersault pack a little extra oomph of authenticity.

Particularly the cargo plane scene ripped straight out of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, where Holland ate a few giant bluescreen cubes while on set. It’s pretty wild, so make sure to check it out below.

Curiously, there appears to be quite a bit in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception  influence on the movie. The poster even  mimics the game’s original PS3 cover art. Interestingly enough, the director of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation  said the airplane sequence in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception  influenced his film as well.

Time will tell in a genuine Uncharted  film will do it better, but first, the movie needs to prove if it’s a  decent video game adaptation. We’ll find out for sure when Uncharted  comes to theaters on Feb. 18, 2022.

Anyone looking to brush up on the series would be wise to check out the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves  collection dropping on PS5 this Friday.
