How Bill Belichick leaving NFL for UNC impacts Saints’ 2025 coach search

Longtime Patriots head coach Bill Belichick moves on from the NFL to become the head coach at North Carolina. How does it impact the Saints?

The NFL landscape has changed many different times over the years, but Bill Belichick was a staple of that landscape, coaching in the league from 1975 with the Baltimore Colts to leaving as head coach of the New England Patriots in 2023. Now, he is pursuing a new career in college football, as he will be moving on to become the head coach at North Carolina.

This is a completely different position from where he was in the NFL, as college has become a completely new landscape under the new regulations, NIL additions, and transfer portal capabilities in recent years, which makes this signing an intriguing one.

The New Orleans Saints are one of the teams who will be looking for a new head coach at the end of the season, and despite Darren Rizzi having a 3-1 start so far, who knows what the front office will do come off-season time? Bill Belichick was likely not one of those candidates, however, as Seth Wickersham of ESPN listed several teams that may have been potential options before:

“Belichick insisted to the Falcons and made clear to other teams with openings last year that he wasn’t seeking the total control of football operations he enjoyed for most of his head coaching career, both in Cleveland and in New England. He was willing to work with existing staff, whether it was Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot or Commanders general manager Adam Peters or Jerry Jones or Howie Roseman, if the Cowboys or Eagles, respectively, had decided to change coaches.”

Instead, one more experienced head coaching candidates comes off the board, which leaves the NFL with less options, and therefore the Saints with fewer targets as teams will begin their yearly scramble to hire the best ones as soon as possible.

We will find out who the Saints end up with eventually, whether than be Rizzi, a different internal candidate, or an external candidate, but whoever they choose, it will not be Bill Belichick.

Steelers OC honest in his comments about UNC coaching job

The Steelers could lose their offensive coordinator at the end of the season.

After struggling as an NFL head coach with the Atlanta Falcons, Arthur Smith has found his way again as the offensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, his tenure with the Steelers could be short-lived as Smith has been named as one of the coaches the University of North Carolina is interested in as their new head coach for the 2025 season.

It only makes sense as UNC is Smith’s alma mater. Smith addressed the rumors and situation and was candid about his feelings on the idea of returning to UNC as the head coach and where things stand.

“Obviously, that’s my alma mater,” Smith said. “That’s not something I’ve thought about. I know in today’s media things can blow up out of control. The reality is they reached out with a preliminary call. I appreciate it and love that place, but that’s not my focus. I have one of the best jobs in football right now.”

A draft’s-eye viewers guide to Thursday Night’s college football slate

A draft’s-eye viewers guide to Thursday Night’s college football slate, featuring a few interesting prospects for the 2025 NFL Draft

Labor Day weekend is here and that means college football is back in full swing. Sit back, relax and enjoy five straight days of college football, starting with tonight’s slate that features four Top 25 teams in action.

Matchup of the Night

Kaimon Rucker, Edge, UNC vs. Minnesota’s OTs

The best game of the night also features the best matchup of the evening. Rucker, the edge rusher for the Tar Heels will be squaring off against the Golden Gopher’s offensive tackle tandem of Aireontae Ersery and Quinn Carroll.

At 6-6, 337 pounds, Ersery is a mountain and he moves like a tight end. The Missouri native has started 26 games at left tackle and one game at right tackle. The Golden Gopher left tackle is powerful and creates surge as a run blocker. With his frame and athleticism, Ersery has all the tools that NFL teams covet.

Since transferring from Notre Dame to Minnesota in 2022, Caroll has started 26 games at right tackle for the Golden Gophers. The Edina, Minnesota native has an NFL frame, plays with good knee bend, and gets proper depth in his sets.

Trying to get past those two behemoths, will be Rucker. The Tar Heel product is coming off a season in which he recorded 61 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and 60 pressures. Rucker competes with consistent effort and has a radar for the football. As a pass rusher, Rucker wins with his quickness and it will be interesting to see his approach tonight against Ersery and Carroll.

Prospect to Watch

Grey Zabel, OL, NDSU

Zabel and the Bison head to Boulder to take on Colorado this evening. Zabel enters tonight’s contest with 22 career starts to his name. Zabel is likely the next NDSU OL to hear his name called during draft weekend. The South Dakota native is a technician and has tackle-guard versatility.

“Small School Prospect”

Jackson Slater, OL, Sacramento State

Slater enters tonight’s matchup against San Jose State with 35 career starts under his belt. With 33 of those starts coming at left guard and the other two at left tackle. A four-sport athlete in high school, Slater was listed on Bruce Feldman’s Annual Freak’s list this summer. From Feldman:

“He power cleaned 405 pounds and squatted 635, and he moves very well for his frame, topping out at 19.96 mph.”

Slater is regarded as one of the top prospects in the Big Sky Conference and is coming off a season in which he gave up zero sacks and 10 pressures.

Opinion- Why is UNC on the sidelines vs. the ACC?

Clemson and FSU would benefit from UNC joining their fight to leave the ACC. So why haven’t it?

Clemson and Florida State are waist-deep into their respective lawsuits against the Atlantic Coast Conference.

FSU just won a battle to keep its lawsuit in Florida, when Leon County Judge John C. Cooper denied the ACC’s request to dismiss the lawsuit on three counts. On the other hand, Clemson just took a small blow in the ACC’s countersuit in North Carolina.

Both schools are fighting tooth and nail in three states to win the right to move on from the ACC, and that raises a good question.

What is North Carolina doing?

When the ACC voted to bring a lawsuit against FSU in December, three members abstained from voting: Clemson, UNC, and Cal. Clemson makes sense because it brought its own lawsuit against the conference. And Cal makes sense because it’s a brand new team to the conference and probably chose to sit this out so as to not ruffle any feathers. But why would UNC expose itself in the vote against FSU only to sit on the sidelines?

Some lawyers will tell you that the best lawsuits are the ones that settle out of court. And to make the ACC settle, the universities leaving need to cause more damage to the ACC than it would benefit from a win in court. To do so means the battle against the ACC should be fought like a war of attrition. The longer the lawsuits proceed, the more mud is slung on the face of the conference in the eyes of the public and the more resources the ACC has to use to fight the lawsuit. If UNC joins the fight, it opens another front.

But maybe UNC doesn’t actually want out. It had a change in leadership at the same time the ACC voted to sue FSU. UNC’s Chancellor, Kevin M. Guskiewicz, left to be the President of Michigan State when the meeting happened, and it was reportedly interim Chancellor Lee H Roberts’ first day in his position. Like Cal, maybe Roberts was hedging his bets.

On the other hand, evidence points to the university wanting out. Just a couple of weeks ago, North Carolina’s General Assembly floated and then killed a Bill that would force UNC and NC State to play every year. In the ACC, that already happens. Why would North Carolina’s lawmakers feel threatened if UNC didn’t want to leave the ACC?

Rumors are that UNC’s Board of Trustees also wants out. One member, Dave Boliek, puts it clearly that he wants out,

“I am advocating for that,” he said. “That’s what we need to do. We need to do everything we can to get there. Or the alternative is the ACC is going to have to reconstruct itself. I think all options are on the table.”

But for the sake of argument, let’s say that’s the case. The University of North Carolina wants out of the ACC. Now, why isn’t it doing anything? Maybe it was waiting for the General Assembly’s Bill to run its course. If UNC had to bring little brother along after it left the ACC, the negotiation power of UNC would have severely diminished. Then UNC would have needed to amend its cost vs. risk assessment before it opened a can of worms against the ACC.

A more cynical view is that UNC wants to see what happens to FSU and Clemson first, which would be cowardice at the highest level. That would mean UNC signaled its intentions to fight alongside Clemson and FSU, but is now creeping slowly back into the bushes like Homer Simpson until the coast is clear.

ACC Basketball Stadiums Ranked by Capacity

Which is the best venue in ACC basketball?

You can’t tell the story of college basketball without a long discussion about the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Duke-North Carolina speaks for itself as a rivalry but it is so much deeper than just those two.

Louisville has won multiple national championships and been a force despite falling on tough times of late.

North Carolina State provided perhaps the greatest Cinderella story in the history of the NCAA Tournament.

There are too many to name here but every other program has had their moments in the sun and star players as well.

And all of those players played in some of the most-known arenas in college basketball.  How do they rank in terms of seating capacity?

Here are the 15 men’s basketball arenas in the ACC ranked from the smallest seating capacity to the largest.

Bubba Cunningham confirms North Carolina’s potential NIL changes

Bubba Cunningham confirmed that North Carolina will look to join one collective for NIL.

North Carolina is attempting to re-tool their NIL collective, moving it all under one umbrella. The university currently has three collectives but the goal is to move them to one but will not prevent fans from donating to specific sports.

Inside Carolina reported the news earlier this week and it was confirmed by athletics director Bubba Cunningham confirmed in a letter distributed to fans on Thursday.

Here is what Cunningham said in the letter:

“This coming April, the NCAA will vote on whether to allow universities and athletic departments greater involvement in facilitating NIL for student-athletes,” Cunningham and Rams Club executive director John Montgomery said in the letter. “We anticipate that increased involvement will be allowed, and we are working to be ready. In preparation, the three collectives are in discussions to move under one umbrella so that both our Department of Athletics and The Rams Club can collaborate with them more effectively within the rules. This should help streamline communications and the process for those who want to support NIL efforts.”

The three collectives Heels4Life, Secondary Break Club, and NC Hall of Fame currently serve as UNC’s NIL efforts. The goal is to help promote them all under the one umbrella if possible.

New Orleans Saints spotted scouting UNC’s loss to Clemson

The New Orleans Saints were spotted scouting UNC’s loss to Clemson, giving them insight on a potential rival quarterback in Drake Maye:

The New Orleans Saints were spotted scouting UNC’s loss to Clemson on Saturday, possibly giving them insight on quarterback Drake Maye, a potential future rival. The Tar Heel Times’ R.J. Bynum noted the Saints as one of six NFL teams with scouts at the game, including the Atlanta Falcons — who were one of a few teams to send multiple representatives to the press box.

Atlanta is projected to pick inside the top-10 next April, putting them in range to trade up to the top of the draft for their chosen passer (just like the Carolina Panthers did in targeting Bryce Young this past cycle). There’s a non-zero chance that Maye could end up being a dirty bird.

If so, his performance on Saturday may have been illuminating. Maye had a bit of a meltdown in the game, completing just 16 of his 36 pass attempts for 209 yards, throwing both a touchdown and an interception. He was sacked four times but rushed for 67 yards, doing his best to give the offense a spark. He’s been pushing USC star Caleb Williams for the top spot in the 2024 draft class and a rough game like this will give NFL evaluators a lot to mull over.

What about the other NFL hopefuls on the field? Clemson’s first-round cornerback prospect Nate Wiggins intercepted Maye to seal the win late in the fourth quarter, forced a fumble on a touchdown-saving play earlier on, and finished second on the team with 7 tackles (6 solo).

Clemson linebackers Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Barrett Carter each played well (Trotter had 11 combined tackles, a sack, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a pass deflection) and are both projected to be top-50 picks should they declare for the draft. But it remains to be seen which underclassmen will enter the draft, and it’s anyone’s guess who the Saints were eyeing on Saturday.

Social media reactions to Tez Walker’s immediate eligibility

Social media reacts to NCAA’s decision to grant Devontez Walker immediate eligibility to join the UNC football program.

Finally, we have all been waiting to hear the news: UNC transfer wide receiver Devontez Walker is immediately eligible to lace up for the Tar Heels.

The national fight to “Free Tez,” a chant echoed in stadiums, is finally over. The UNC football program announced that the NCAA has ruled to allow Walker immediate eligibility, sparking virtual high-fives across social media.

Mack Brown stated following the announcement, thanking the NCAA for re-examining Walker’s case.

“We are so happy for Tez,” Brown stated. “Everything that’s transpired over the last few months has been with the sole purpose of helping and supporting him, and now he is going to have a chance to live his dream.”

Walker also released a statement following the news, showing gratitude for the verdict change.

“I always knew UNC was a special place, but it has proved it over and over again throughout the last few months,” Walker stated. “I’ve received so much support from the University, the athletics department, my coaches, the staff, and my teammates. Most of all, I’ve felt so much love from the fans.”

It is safe to say it is a GDTBAH. Let us look at how social media reacted to the breaking news.

Social media reacts to Mack Hollins’ heated exchange with Desmond Ridder

Social media reacts to former North Carolina Tar Heel Mack Hollin’s heated exchange with teammate QB Desmond Ridder.

Week four of the NFL season has brought some exciting moments from the 1 P.M. slate, one being former Tar Heel wideout Mack Hollins appearing to get upset with Falcons starting quarterback Desmond Ridder.

The broadcast caught the moment briefly, with many speculating it coming from Ridder’s lackluster play in the game. While others suggested it could be Hollins’s low numbers on the season due to a lack of targets, failing to snag a reception in Sunday’s loss to the Jaguars.

The viral clip has garnered more than seven million views.

Hollins this season has seven receptions for 114 yards and zero touchdowns. When Hollins was a member of the Las Vegas Raiders this time last year, he had already had 17 receptions for 273 yards.

Hollins’s heated exchange with Ridder caused quite a stir on social media, with major sports media platforms sharing the encounter. Let us look at how social media reacted to the viral moment.
