Independents Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

College Football News Independent preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

The world of the independent college football programs will soon get a tad smaller with Liberty and New Mexico State off to Conference USA in 2023, BYU diving into the Big 12, and Notre Dame joining …

Maybe not yet on the Fighting Irish, but before the independents start finding homes in desperate conferences looking for members, they almost all once again have interesting schedules.

Notre Dame and BYU will make the most noise – as always – with so many high-profile showdowns, but Army could be the most interesting independent. If it can beat Coastal Carolina on the road to start the season, look out. At Wake Forest and the date against Air Force in Arlington, Texas are the only times the Knights should be the underdog.

BYU and Notre Dame play each other in Las Vegas, UMass and New Mexico State play each other, Army plays UConn and UMass, and Liberty plays UConn, UMass, and New Mexico State. And UConn and UMass go at it.

There’s obviously no conference championship to play for, so …

UMass Minutemen Preview 2022

Let’s just see if we can kickstart this thing.

The UMass experience up at the FBS level hasn’t exactly been a smashing success.

It won one game last year, it didn’t win any of the four in 2020, and it won one game in 2019. To hammer this home even more, since making the move up in 2012, the program has won 18 games – just four more than Georgia did all of last year.

But it’s not like this is one of those programs that hasn’t won anything since the 1950s. There was a winning season in 2010, and this was an FCS powerhouse as recently as the mid-2000s, with head coach Don Brown leading the way to one national title appearance in 2006 and back into the playoffs in 2007.

Brown left in 2009 to become one of the top defensive coordinators in college football, working his way up to the Michigan gig before trying to turn around the Arizona D last year.

Now the when-the-season-starts 67-year-old is back to try to give UMass football something it can build on. There’s experience to work with, and there are plenty of winnable games on the schedule if the team is merely competent.

UMass Minutemen Preview 2022: Offense

The offense hasn’t been great at that scoring thing. It averaged only 16 points and 300 yards per game. There wasn’t any passing game, it was painfully inefficient, but there was a ground attack at times and there were slivers of light here and there. The biggest positive was that it wasn’t as bad as the defense.

Nine starters are expected to be back, and it should all revolve around that ground game early on.

The offensive line is hardly a killer, but it wasn’t awful in pass protection and it cranked out enough of a push to give the offense something to rely on. The line will be a relative strength as it paves the way for Ellis Merriweather, a tough back who pounded away for 1,138 yards and five touchdowns averaging over five yards per carry. He’s the star of the show, but …

UMass has to be able to throw at least a little bit. Four different Minutemen threw at least nine passes with sophomore Brady Olson getting the most work. He’s the odds-on favorite to get back the gig, but it’s an open fight with Zamar Wise and Garrett Dzuro – all three failed to hit 50% of their passes.

The receiving corps gets a slew of parts back. Rico Arnold led the way with only 27 catches for 461 yards and three scores, but he averaged over 17 yards per grab. He’s the No. 1 target, but TE Josiah Johnson and veteran receiver Jermaine Johnson will will be a bigger part of the fun.

UMass Minutemen Preview 2022: Defense

The defense needs to be night-and-day better, and it should be under Don Brown and the new coaching staff. UMass allowed 485 yards and a nation-high 43 points per game. There weren’t enough takeaways – the D picked off just 2 passes – and only two teams were worse at stopping offenses on third downs.

With seven starters back, and – again – with Brown taking over, at least this group will be far more aggressive and disruptive. That starts with …

There has to be a pass rush. The Minutemen only came up with 11 sacks and 45 tackles for loss with 310-pound Billy Wooden doing the heavy lifting. He led the team with eight tackles for loss, but now he’ll be working more on the nose as the new parts take care of the pass rush.

Marcus Bradley is coming in from Vanderbilt and Marcus Cushnie is a former Alabama A&M and Florida State backup who’ll get his shot. These two will go along with Uchenna Ezewike, who led the team with 2.5 sacks.

The top tacklers are back. It’s a decent-sized group that at least cranked up the stops – now everyone has to make more big plays. Gerrell Johnson led the team with 80 tackles, Da’Shon Rice made 76 stops in the middle, and in all, 23 of the top 26 tacklers were underclassmen.

Junior Donte Lindsay is a strong open field tackler from his safety spot, but there have to be more plays on the ball. Josh Wallace is the top returning corner with 12 broken up passes, but he spent too much time making tackles.

Former Michigan State football DL Tyson Watson commits to UMass

Tyson Watson is heading to UMass

Michigan State has seen their fair share of players hit the transfer portal, much like the rest of the country, and defensive lineman Tyson Watson was one of them. Watson was a 3-star prospect and a member of the 2021 recruiting class, Mel Tucker’s first at Michigan State. After his true freshman season, Watson made the decision to enter the transfer portal.

Watson has made the decision to transfer to the University of Massachusetts. Watson will be playing under new UMass head coach Don Brown, who Spartan fans know very well from his time as the University of Michigan’s defensive coordinator.

Watson, a Warren, Michigan native, will surely have some familiarity with Brown and his staff, making this a good landing spot for the former Spartan.

UMass vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

New Mexico State has stopped scoring.

The team has struggled through game after game without a win over an FCS team, but at least the offense worked in tough losses to San Jose State and New Mexico. It hasn’t gone anywhere over the last few weeks.

Now, there’s a reason for that – Utah State, Alabama, and Kentucky were the last three teams on the slate, to the Aggies can be forgiving if they came up with just nine rushing yards in Tuscaloosa and didn’t get past 16 points in October.

UMass has been running just enough to potentially get control of the game early on, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why New Mexico State Will Win

While New Mexico State was dealing with a whole slew of tough teams, UMass was losing to Rhode Island and Maine.

The Aggie offense should perk up once again now that it’s playing a defense with no pass rush and is last in the nation in scoring D.

New Mexico State really does have a little bit of pop to the passing game, and now that it’s back at home for just the second time against September – and against a team that’s its own size …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the Aggie offense again.

It’s been a brutal year without any real breaks for New Mexico State. It’s been a paycheck team for most of the season, but now it gets to have a little fun in the season finale.

The running game will be good, the offense will be balanced, and it’ll be a real, live, easy win.

Army vs UMass Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

UMass has a whole slew of issues, and doing anything against anyone’s passing game is front and center.

Not an issue in this.

It’s a lost year with a new coach coming in for 2022 – there’s truly nothing to lose in this if the team wants to take a whole slew of chances.

Army doesn’t force takeaways, the defensive front doesn’t get into the backfield, and UMass has a way of keeping control of games just enough give the defense a little bit of a rest.

There’s a decent running game that should be able to come up with a few good drives, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Army Will Win

Army should be able to do whatever it wants with the running game.

UMass hasn’t been all that bad against the run, but that’s partly because it went against a few FCS teams and UConn. Army’s No. 2 running game – Air Force leads the nation – hit 400 yards in two of the last three games and should be able to roll at will.

But Army can throw just a little bit, too. It’s not going to go airborne too often, but against the nation’s least efficient pass defense, there should be two big plays.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It all depends on how much Army wants to keep it all rolling. The problem is that there’s no way to not slow down what it does – what is it supposed to do, throw to try to be nice?

UMass couldn’t hold up against Rhode Island and Maine, and now it’s about to have a long afternoon against the Black Knight option attack.

UMass vs Maine Game Preview

Why Maine Will Win

UMass is trying to get through the season.

Head coach Walt Bell was let go a few weeks ago, the team has one win – it came over a depleted UConn team – and it’s struggling in too many areas.

The Huskies just lost to Rhode Island 35-22. Maine beat the Rams a few weeks ago 45-24.

The Maine offensive line is decent at keeping defenses out of the backfield, the offense has picked it up over the second half of the season, and the team should be able to win the battle up front on both sides. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why UMass Will Win

Maine doesn’t do much to get into the backfield.

There’s no pass rush to worry about, the secondary is sketchy, and the offense doesn’t go on long, drawn out marches.

For all of the problems UMass has, it’s not bad at slowing things down and controlling the clock. The passing game wasn’t all that bad in the loss to Rhode Island, Ellis Merriweather ran for 118 yards and a score, and the offense should be able to move a bit against the porous Maine D that allows close to 400 yards per game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

UMass just can’t seem to catch the right breaks at the right times.

The offense going put enough points on the board in the second half against Rhode Island, and now it’s getting a Maine team that’s a wee bit of the opposite. It’s not playing great, but it’s finding ways to get wins helped by the defense holding up just enough.

UMass vs Rhode Island Game Preview

Why Rhode Island Will Win

The UMass defense is a problem.

It’s been struggling all season long, and the offense has been the biggest issue to overcome, but the D has been destroyed over the last two weeks allowing 121 points.

But that was against Florida State and Liberty. Rhode Island doesn’t have that type of talent, but the passing game is able to bomb away big and the defense is usually able to take care of the rest.

Former Maryland QB Kasim Hill isn’t all that accurate and the O has struggled lately, but the attack is hitting close to 14 yards per pass and should hit just enough deep shots to open things up.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why UMass Will Win

Rhode Island can’t score.

UMass might have a power outage, but it’s playing a slew of decent FBS teams. The Rams scored seven points in back-to-back games against Towson and Villanova, and they couldn’t keep up in a 21-point loss to Maine.

For all of the problems UMass is having, the running gnat hasn’t been bad over the last few weeks – it ran for 210 yards on Florida State – and Rhode Island doesn’t have the type of defense that can get into the backfield on a regular basis.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

At the very least, UMass will hold on to the ball enough to keep this from getting out of hand. The problem will be the big plays.

Rhode Island will give up over 200 yards on the ground, but it’ll make up for it with a few big scoring plays and lightning strikes.

Liberty vs UMass Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

What happened to Liberty?

It’s still good, but it isn’t the consistently amazing offensive show of last year, even though almost all of the parts are back.

6-2 is hardly bad, but the offense hasn’t hit 400 yards in either of the last two games, the running game wasn’t there against North Texas, and UMass has to  try to keep things moving enough to hold up.

The Flame defense couldn’t slow down the North Texas running game, the pass defense has allowed over 200 yards in each of the last three games, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Liberty Will Win

Liberty is just fine.

It might not be quite as sharp and dominant as it was last year, but it’s playing well enough to pull against a UMass defense that’s been ripped up against the run on a regular basis.

The Minutemen might have pushed the offense against UConn, and it had a good game earlier in the year against Eastern Michigan, but they’re inconsistent and the running game will struggle to get anything consistently moving.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Liberty has been underwhelming over the last few weeks on the road, but it’s back at home, the UMass offense has scored seven points or fewer in three of the last four games, and this is when everything starts to look back to how it’s supposed to be.

Why Florida State Will Win
