Five takeaways from Texas A&M’s 47-3 win over UL Monroe

Conner Weigman will steer the trajectory of the season, while the lack of the pass rush remains a head scratcher. These are the five takeaways from Texas A&M’s win over ULM.

Texas A&M (2-1) got back into the win column with a 47-3 rout of UL Monroe (2-1) Saturday afternoon. For at least another week, the Aggies’ season has been saved, to the chagrin of the cynics.

The Maroon and White had to respond with an efficient performance on both sides of the ball following their humbling loss to Miami last weekend. A thorough double-digit victory against the Warhawks was just what the doctor ordered before the Aggies start the SEC part of their schedule next Saturday.

Conner Weigman continues to profile as the game-changing quarterback that this football program needs to reach new heights. His explosive performance even caught the eye of a legendary Aggies quarterback who was in attendance. In spite of playing without his top target, Texas A&M’s receiving group, led by Ainias Smith and Jahdae Walker, torched the Warhawks’ secondary for over 100 receiving yards apiece.

It proved to be a highly efficient day on both sides of the football, with the Aggies giving up just a field goal to UL Monroe. Still, as the regular season truly begins against Auburn next Saturday, it’s clear there are still areas to address, particularly when it comes to the defense generating pressure.

Here are the five immediate takeaways from Texas A&M’s 47-3 rout of UL Monroe.

‘He keeps the guys together,’ Fadil Diggs, Trey Zuhn, and Bryce Anderson praise Conner Weigman, overall team performance after win vs. UL Monroe

Fadil Diggs, Trey Zuhn, and Bryce Anderson touted Conner Weigman and the overall bounce back performance in their Week 3 win over UL Monroe.

Texas A&M (2-1) routed UL Monroe (2-1) to the tune of 47-3 in their Week 3 matchup late Saturday afternoon. The blowout victory was just what the doctor ordered as the Aggies turn the page toward SEC play next weekend.

All eyes were on how this team would respond after suffering a humbling loss to Miami in Week 2. Granted, the Warhawks are far from a competitive opponent. And yet, a thorough victory in all three phases would be the type of jolt this team needs before heading into SEC play next weekend.

Suffice it to say they took last week’s loss personally, and UL Monroe was left to suffer the wrath. Quarterback Conner Weigman got the show going early with a scorching first-half performance to give the Aggies a lead they would never relinquish. Weigman would finish 25/29 for 337 yards, one passing touchdown, and one rushing touchdown on the day.

The level of play from Weigman once again drew praise from the likes of Fadil Diggs, Trey Zuhn, and Bryce Anderson, who each took the podium in the postgame. All three underscored the efficient performance in all facets of the game. Notably, they all agreed that this type of win was needed before welcoming Auburn to Kyle Field next Saturday to kick off SEC play.

Below are Diggs, Zuhn, and Anderson’s full UL Monroe postgame press conferences, as well as notable highlights from their time at the podium.

‘Very efficient day, in my opinion, in all three phases,’ Jimbo Fisher spotlights Conner Weigman, Aggie receivers as Texas A&M routes UL Monroe

Jimbo Fisher touted the efficient play in all three phases, Conner Weigman, and Texas A&M’s receivers in their 47-3 win over UL Monroe in Week 3.

Texas A&M (2-1) routed UL Monroe (2-1) to the tune of 47-3 in their Week 3 matchup late Saturday afternoon. The blowout victory was just what the doctor ordered as the Aggies turn the page toward SEC play next weekend.

Despite a handful of players such as Evan Stewart and Tony Grimes not dressed, to preserve them for next week, Texas A&M’s offense was reminiscent of their high-octane scoring from Week 1. Truth be told, A&M had Conner Weigman to thank as he put together a scorching first-half performance to give the Aggies a lead they would never relinquish.

In his postgame presser following the Aggies’ return to the win column, head coach Jimbo Fisher praised A&M’s efficiency in all three phases of the game. He spotlighted Weigman’s continued development in throwing the deep ball. Additionally, he underscored how some of the young receivers, such as Jahdae Walker, were able to prove impactful in the passing game.

The Warhawks were far from a competitive opponent, but the Week 3 victory was a needed jolt as A&M prepares to welcome Auburn next week for their first taste of SEC play. Fisher echoed just as much in highlighting that the season truly begins when the Tigers come to town next Saturday.

Conner Weigman’s efficient day leaves him just four percentage points shy of the All-Time Aggie completion record

After defeating UL Monroe 47-3, Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman’s 86.2% completion rate nearly tied the All-Time Aggie record.

Last weekend’s debacle in South Beach left many fans asking, “Is Texas A&M a pretender?” Well, until SEC play, that’s a tricky question to answer, but with sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman at the helm, the Aggies are in excellent hands no matter who they face in 2023.

On Saturday afternoon, after what was an hour delay due to thunderstorms in the College Station area, Weigman put on an absolute show against the visit UL Monroe Warhawks, shredding the secondary for 337 yards and one touchdown, adding a 19-yard touchdown run on the ground in the second quarter.

Most notably, Weigman completed 25/29, as his 86.2% rate was just four percentage points lower than the current record held by former Texas A&M quarterback and NFL coach Gary Kubiak’s 90.5% rate in 1981 against Arkansas with a minimum of 10 attempts.

With starting wide receiver Evan Stewart on the sideline while recovering from an undisclosed injury, senior do-it-all wideout Ainias Smith had one of his best games since last season before his injury, recording a game-high seven receptions for 127 yards. In contrast, breakout Grand Valley State transfer wide receiver Jahdae Walker used his 6-5 frame to his advantage, hauling five receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown.

Weigman’s ascendance isn’t surprising to those of us who cover the program, knowing that his five starts last season prepared him for the gauntlet that is SEC play and the arm talent, accuracy, toughness, and enhanced pocket presence to get the job done every week.

Last weekend’s brutal loss to the Hurricanes included Weigman enduring blitz pressure on 33 of his 57 dropbacks, and according to Aggies left tackle Trey Zuhn, he was right back in the film room to focus on sliding protection and anticipating pressure in the pocket, which showed in the win on Saturday.

With Auburn coming to town next weekend, UL Monroe served as the “get right” game the entire team needed to refocus and reset, and for Conner Weigman, this is only the beginning of his incredible 2023 story.

Texas A&M will host the Auburn Tigers at Kyle Field on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 11:00 a.m., where it will air on ESPN.

Social media reacts: Conner Weigman is dealing as Texas A&M takes 27-3 lead vs. UL Monroe

Haven’t you heard? Conner Weigman is that guy! The sophomore was dealing as Texas A&M took a 27-3 first half lead over UL Monroe.

Texas A&M (1-1) has an early 20-3 lead on UL Monroe (2-0) through the first half, and there’s a central reason for the early advantage: Conner Weigman.

The sophomore quarterback was absolutely dealing through the first two-quarters of Saturday’s matchup with the Warhawks. All the chatter leading up to gameday was how the Aggies needed to bounce back after last week’s loss to Miami. Suffice it say Weigman heard that loud and clear, and dare I say, took it personally.

Weigman got Texas A&M on the board early with a beautiful touchdown throw to Jahdae Walker to close out the first quarter. Walker, alongside Ainias Smith, proved to be the favorite target for Weigman as Evan Stewart did not dress out for Saturday’s game, likely to preserve him for next week’s matchup with Auburn.

Weigman finished the first half with 19/23 passing, 287 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and one rushing touchdown. His rushing score marked his second of the season and the 10th overall of his early collegiate career. Thanks to Weigman cooking in the pocket, A&M ended the first half with 359 total yards of offense.

Here are the best social media reactions to Weigman’s red-hot first half against UL Monroe.

Weather Update: Strong storm with heavy winds reported ahead of Texas A&M vs. UL Monroe kickoff

A strong storm with lightning and winds was reported ahead of Texas A&M’s Week 3 matchup with UL Monroe. Fans in attendance were advised to seek safe shelter indoors.

A strong storm with lightning and winds was reported ahead of Texas A&M‘s (1-1) Week 3 matchup with UL Monroe (2-0). The Aggie Football social account advised all in attendance to seek safe shelter indoors from the storm.

Fans attending the game in person can seek shelter inside Kyle Field for ticketed guests, the Memorial Student Center, and Reed Arena’s North and East entrances. Texas A&M and UL Monroe are still scheduled to kickoff at 3 p.m. CT.

The weather update follows a similar trend from last week’s matchup against Miami, in which both teams and fans in attendance were advised to seek shelter at Hard Rock Stadium. The likelihood is that the Aggies-Warhawks matchup will likely be delayed as a result.

We will provide further updates as they come through ahead of kickoff.

Look: Multiple Aggies, including star WR Evan Stewart are not dressed out ahead of Texas A&M vs. UL Monroe

Ahead of Texas A&M’s Week 3 home matchup vs. UL Monroe, staring WR Evan Stewart and cornerback Tony Grimes not dressed out ahead of kickoff.

Ahead of Texas A&M’s Week 3 home matchup vs. UL Monroe, set to kick off in less than half an hour, two key players on offense and defense for the Maroon and White, including starting wide receiver Evan Stewart, safety Jardin Gilbert and rotational cornerback Tony Grimes, are currently on the sidelines with the rest of their teammates, albeit in street clothes.

Just a week away from the start of SEC play, Auburn will travel to College Station for an early Saturday afternoon kickoff, and not to throw out any assumptions regarding both players’ health, being cautious this week to be ready for the rest of the season wouldn’t be surprising given the bevy of injuries the Aggies sustained in 2022.

On the bright side, sophomore running back Le’Veon Moss, who missed the Miami game last weekend, is dressed out, adding his powerful running style to an Aggies offense that missed his presence in the loss. Stewart, who recorded 11 receptions for 142 yards against the Hurricanes, leads the team in receiving with 257 yards and two touchdowns. Still, given the depth in the Aggies’ wide receiver rotation, his potential one-game absence shouldn’t be a major issue.

After transferring from North Carolina, Cornerback Tony Grimes has yet to carve out a role in the secondary. Gilbert, who has started at free safety since the 2022 season, did not have his best game last weekend but is still a proven secondary member. Hopefully, after resting this week, Grimes’ playing trajectory will change because Texas A&M’s defensive back group needs all the help they can get.

Update: Starting center Bryce Foster and cornerback Tyreek Chappell are also out.

Texas A&M will return to Kyle Field to take on Louisiana Monroe on Saturday, Sept. 16, as the game will air on the SEC Network at 3:00 p.m. CT.

How to watch: Texas A&M – UL Monroe football game

The Aggies will host the ULM Warhawks with a chance to move back above .500 before SEC play starts

Texas A&M (1-1) will host the ULM Warhawks (2-0) in College Station at Kyle Field on Saturday.

The newly unranked Aggies have hit the reset button on their 48-33 loss to Miami, and the Warhawks will have to deal with a motivated Texas A&M team. Offensively, Conner Wiegman has a good handle on the playbook, and they show all the signs of being a breakout squad. The defense looks stronger, but they are still trying to find their way as the heat gets a little warm under defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin.

UL Monroe is currently 2-0 to start the season but sits at 0-4 vs. the Aggies. The Warhawks are a team that loves to run the ball and is averaging 246 yards on the ground per game and are 2-2 on 4th down attempts on the season so far. On the flip side, they are only averaging around 21 points per game, which will not get the job done, especially if they get in a hole early.

Texas A&M’s 2023 regular-season home schedule has contests against ULM, Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina, Mississippi State, and ACU.

The Aggies’ Road schedule features games at Miami, Arkansas, Tennessee, Ole Miss, and LSU.
