Updated Georgia injury report ahead of UGA vs Florida

Final injury updates for Georgia head of Florida matchup

The Top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (7-0, 4-0 in SEC) are set to take on the Florida Gators (5-2, 3-1 in SEC) in The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Kickoff in Jacksonville is set for 3:30 p.m. ET, televised on CBS.

Georgia doesn’t enter the rivalry matchup healthy. The injury situation has plagued the Bulldogs throughout the season.

Star tight end Brock Bowers will miss the first game of his career after suffering an ankle injury that required TightRope surgery. While Bowers will be missed, a couple of key Bulldogs are close to returning to the lineup.

Here’s our updated Georgia injury report, including recent quotes from head coach Kirby Smart:

Former Georgia Bulldog Jalen Carter leads all NFL DTs in this stat

Former Georgia Bulldog Jalen Carter leads all NFL DTs in this stat

Former Georgia Bulldog Jalen Carter is showing his dominance extends past the college level.

In six game appearances, the Philadelphia Eagles rookie leads all NFL defensive tackles in pass rush win rate (22%), per Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Carter was expected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL draft but dropped to the No. 9 spot after off-the-field concerns were raised. It seems those concerns have been put to bed: Carter is having one of the best rookie seasons at defensive tackle in recent memory.

The former All-American has racked up eight tackles, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles so far this season. Overall, PFF has Carter graded as the best interior defensive lineman in the NFL this season with a 91.3 grade.

Carter and the Eagles’ next test will be on the road against Washington Commanders. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET on Fox.

Georgia’s Kirby Smart talks Michigan sign-stealing scandal

Georgia’s Kirby Smart talks Michigan sign-stealing scandal

The Michigan Wolverines have taken over college football headlines this week, but it isn’t because they sit at No. 2 in the AP Poll.

The NCAA is investigating the program for allegedly scouting future opponents, in person, in order to steal signs. Michigan staffer Connor Stallion is at the center of the allegations, and he has been suspended with pay, according to reports.

It’s unclear how long this tactic has been used by Michigan. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was asked about the matter on Tuesday. The Bulldogs took down the Wolverines, 34-11, in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Orange Bowl on Dec. 31, 2021.

“I didn’t notice anything or know anything. Nobody we talked to warned us or anything like that,” Smart said. “I think everybody we play, they say, ‘We steal your signals.’ We play somebody, they’re great at stealing your signals. But what they’re referencing is different than stealing them. They’re coming in and you’re talking about someone coming in and filming them. That’s completely different. We’ve tried to hide the signals, hold the calls, put signs up, do all that. But there’s nothing I remember about the Michigan game that makes me think that.”

Smart said he was never asked to steal signs as a coach, nor has he heard of that occurring. He acknowledged teams do try to decipher signs during games.

“As far as in game, I think people try to do that. It tries to go on. As a signal caller, when I had to call defenses it confused me if I had to sit there and try to tell me what they thought they got. I’m trying to think about what the best call for the situation is,” Smart said. “You’re relying on misinformation or something that’s not very reliable, so I don’t know. There have been times where people have said they’ve had our signals in-game and this or that. You talk to the team that you played last and when you’re not going to play them again, sometimes they share what they might have had on you and things like that. So I’ve heard of it in game.”

Smart doesn’t seem to be worried about what’s going on in Ann Arbor, but the college football world is certainly keeping tabs on the investigation. The first College Football Playoff rankings will be released on Tuesday, Oct. 31, and the Wolverines are expected to be close to the top of the list.

The Bulldogs will travel to Jacksonville to take on rival Florida in Jacksonville. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET, televised on CBS.

Georgia football: Kirby Smart shares updates on Amarius Mims, Xavier Truss

Kirby Smart shares updates on Amarius Mims, Xavier Truss

On Tuesday, Kirby Smart provided updates on a couple of key Georgia Bulldogs ahead of Saturday’s matchup with the Florida Gators.

Junior right tackle Amarius Mims, who is recovering from TightRope surgery after suffering an ankle injury in Week 3, has taken reps in a limited capacity.

Left guard Xavier Truss, who has served at right tackle in Mims’ absence, is also taking reps as he works his way back from an ankle injury in Georgia’s win over Vanderbilt.

Yeah, both guys have been able to take some reps and work. Xavier is probably ahead of Mims, which is what we expected, but I was really pleased with Mims. He pushed really hard today and got out there, got some work in. And Truss has been out there both days.

Both Mims and Truss are important pieces along the Bulldogs offensive line, not only for their abilities, but also their experience.

When Truss went down in Week 7, Georgia had to bring in true freshman Monroe Freeling. The former five-star recruit had appeared in only four games prior. While Freeling held his own, the Bulldogs will benefit greatly when Mims and Truss return to the lineup.

What Florida coach Billy Napier said ahead of the Georgia game

Head coach Billy Napier and the Florida Gators are preparing to face the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs

Head coach Billy Napier and the Florida Gators enter the Georgia game as significant underdogs against the defending back-to-back national champion Bulldogs.

Florida is 5-2 to start the year and is getting solid production out of starting quarterback Graham Mertz, a Wisconsin transfer. The Gators have had highs (a comeback road win at South Carolina) and lows (Kentucky bullied the Gators with its rushing attack) to start the season.

Napier and Florida are recruiting at a very high level in the class of 2024. The future is looking up for Florida’s program for the time being. However, we know Florida hates losing to Georgia.

What did Bill Napier say ahead of the Georgia game?

Georgia OLB not with team ahead of Florida matchup

Georgia OLB Darris Smith not with team ahead of Florida matchup

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart told reporters on Tuesday night that outside linebacker Darris Smith is not with the team ahead of the matchup with Florida on Saturday.

The sophomore out of Baxley, Georgia, has appeared in five games this season, most recently in Week 5 at Auburn. Smith has recorded three tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass breakup this season.

The former four-star recruit was rated as the No. 14 edge defender and the No. 14 player in the state of Georgia coming out of Appling County High School.

The reasoning for Smith’s absence wasn’t disclosed by Smart, who spoke highly of Smith after he signed with Georgia in February of 2022.

“Darris Smith is a kid we’re excited about, we’ve loved. He’s got a great work ethic,” Smart said. “He’s from a rural town down there, and he’s done a wonderful job every time he’s been up here of competing, working out … He’s got a lot of growth potential. He’s long. He runs well. Kids that are that size that run well tend to do well in our system. He played at receiver at times. He’s running track right now, and he’s one of the fastest track kids in that area, so we’re certainly excited about him.”

The Bulldogs don’t have much depth at the position. Besides Smith, Georgia has five scholarship outside linebackers remaining: Chaz Chambliss, Marvin Jones Jr., CJ Madden, Damon Wilson and Samuel M’Pemba.

Kickoff against the Gators is set for 3:30 p.m. ET, televised on CBS.

Watch: Former Georgia Bulldog Nolan Smith logs first NFL sack

Eagles rookie Nolan Smith recorded his first career NFL sack on Sunday night…

Eight former Georgia Bulldogs suited up for the Sunday Night Football matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins.

D’Andre Swift, Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean, Jalen Carter, Kelee Ringo and Nolan Smith represented the Dawgs as Eagles. Isaiah Wynn and Channing Tindall took the field as Dolphins.

Swift, Davis and Carter received the most snaps of the group. Jalen Carter was disruptive as usual, but Smith made a splash with his first career NFL sack late in the second quarter.

The Eagles are loaded with experience in the front seven, which has kept Smith from seeing the field much. This play is an encouraging sign for Smith’s growth in his rookie season.

The Eagle beat the Dolphins, 31-17, moving to 6-1 on the season.

Watch: Former Georgia HC Mark Richt pokes fun at himself on broadcast

Former Georgia head coach March Richt, an ACC Network analyst, is still cracking up folks on TV.

Following Miami’s 28-20 double overtime win over Clemson on Saturday night, the ACC Network crew played a hilarious clip of Richt taking a football to the face.

Richt holds a segment each week called ‘Beak of the Week’, which he uses to describe something that “makes me crazy”. Richt is one of the most beloved coaches in Georgia history and for good reason.

Richt made headlines last week when he announced the Chick-fil-A Dawg Bowl, which is helping raise money for Parkinson’s and Crohn’s disease research.

Richt suffers from Parkinson’s disease and his granddaughter, Jaydn, suffers from Crohn’s disease.

The event was held last week and surpassed its goal of $750,000. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and a large group of players were in attendance.

George Pickens has another 100-yard game in Pittsburgh Steelers win

George Pickens has another 100-yard game in Pittsburgh Steelers win

Former Georgia star wide receiver George Pickens is becoming one of the best wideouts in the NFL. Beyond his ability to make highlight plays, Pickens is showing that he can be the go-to option at wideout.

The Pittsburgh Steeler logged his second-straight 100-yard game on Sunday afternoon in a 24-17 win against the Los Angeles Rams in L.A.

Pickens caught 5-of-8 targets for 107 yards, bringing his season total to 22 catches for 393 yards and two touchdowns.

Considering the inconsistency at quarterback, what Pickens has done in Pittsburgh is worth noting. Pickens is on pace to smash his receiving total of 803 yards in 2022.

The Steelers (4-2) moved to second place in the AFC North with the win. They return home next week to take on the 5-2 Jacksonville Jaguars at 1 p.m. ET, televised on CBS.
