How to watch and stream the UFL games this weekend

The UFL is back in action with four games this weekend featuring 23 former Broncos player and one former Denver coach.

Broncos backup QB Ben DiNucci has a great idea for NFL and UFL

Could the NFL make the UFL a developmental league, allowing backups to play in the spring and return in summer? Ben DiNucci likes the idea.

Denver Broncos backup quarterback Ben DiNucci took to Twitter/X with a confession on Wednesday.

“Can’t lie,” the QB wrote on his social media page. “I miss the XFL.”

DiNucci, 27, played in the XFL for the Seattle Sea Dragons in 2023. After he led the league in passing yards (2,671) and ranked second in touchdown passes (20), DiNucci signed with the Broncos. He served as a reserve QB on Denver’s practice squad last year.

DiNucci will likely have a similar backup role in 2024. Meanwhile, the XFL and USFL have merged to join the UFL. Over the last three weeks, 23 former Broncos players have played in the UFL, and DiNucci seems to have a minor case of FOMO.

When asked by a fan if he would consider playing in the UFL again, DiNucci said if he knew his NFL career was over, he’d return to spring football. He’d already be playing in the spring league if he wasn’t employed by Denver.

“Trust me… if I didn’t have a job in the NFL I would be playing again,” DiNucci tweeted on Wednesday evening.

What if it was possible to do both?

Some fans suggested that the NFL adopt the UFL as a developmental league, allowing players to play spring football and then return to the NFL clubs for the start of the offseason program. DiNucci loves the idea.

That kind of format “benefits guys in my position big time,” DiNucci tweeted. “Reps are hardest thing to come by playing QB. Getting 12 games of tape last year was huge.”

DiNucci believes playing in both leagues is feasible.

NFL Europe did not last, but there have been talks in recent years of the NFL attempting to implement a developmental league again. If the UFL proves to be a sustainable league, perhaps the NFL will consider a partnership at some point in the future.

Could UFL’s Jake Bates be the Rams’ solution at kicker?

The Rams still don’t have a kicker locked in, but Jake Bates of the UFL could be the solution after making two FGs from 60-plus yards

The Los Angeles Rams technically have a kicker on their roster after signing Tanner Brown to a reserve/futures contract this offseason, but that doesn’t mean they’ve found their solution at the position. The Rams still need to add a more reliable kicker, whether that’s in the draft or free agency.

Up to this point, they’ve done nothing of note on special teams, which points to them selecting a kicker in this month’s draft. Even if they do draft a kicker, they should consider signing Jake Bates from the UFL, too.

Bates has been a revelation in the spring league this year. In two games, he’s already made field goals from 52, 62 and 64 yards. He’s a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, showing he has plenty of accuracy to go along with a powerful leg.

Bates has a fascinating backstory, too. Despite playing for both Texas State and Arkansas, he never attempted a single field goal in college. He was a kickoff specialist at both schools, which makes sense considering how far he can boot it.

He still landed an offseason opportunity with the Texans last year, signing as an undrafted rookie, but he was released in August – hardly a surprise with Ka’imi Fairbairn on the team. Even in the preseason, he didn’t kick a single field goal for Houston.

Because of his lack of opportunities in college and the pros, Bates hadn’t attempted a field goal in a game since high school. And even then, he only kicked a field goal once as a high schooler.

If his limited experience is concerning, consider the Cowboys found one of the best kickers in football when they signed Brandon Aubrey last year after two years in the USFL. He hadn’t played football until the Birmingham Stallions signed him in 2022, yet he went 36-for-38 as a rookie in the NFL last year, making each of his first 36 attempts to start his career.

The Cowboys showed kickers can be found anywhere, even if they’ve barely played the position. Like Aubrey, Bates is a former soccer player, so kicking is natural for him.

If the Rams don’t feel good about any of the available free agents, they should give Bates a shot. Players don’t make 62- and 64-yard field goals by accident, and Bates even made the 64-yarder twice because he was iced by the opponent the first time.

Oh, and it was the game-winner, too.

The Rams have nothing to lose when it comes to giving Bates a chance.

Stallions, Defenders close out Week 2 with wins

Check out what happened in Sunday’s UFL games in Week 2.

Week 2 of the UFL season wrapped up on Sunday with two games. In the first, the Birmingham Stallions remained undefeated, while the D.C. Defenders picked up their first win of the year.

What happened?

Stallions 20, Panthers 13

Birmingham kicker Chris Blewitt made four field goals to give the Stallions a 2-0 start. They outgained Michigan 305-202 but were 2-for-10 on third down. Defensively, they sacked Panthers quarterbacks seven times, three by Taco Charlton.

Defenders 23, Roughnecks 18

Houston dropped to 0-2 on Sunday.

The Defenders scored 11 fourth-quarter points and won after entering the final frame down six.

Former Cardinals quarterback Jarrett Gurantano was benched by the Roughnecks after going 3-for-8 passing for 23 yards. Former Cardinals running back T.J. Pledger led the Roughnecks with 47 rushing yards on 11 attempts.

Jordan Ta’amu threw two touchdown passes for the Defenders in the win.

DC Defenders defeat Houston Roughnecks for first UFL win

The Defenders pick up their first UFL win on Sunday.

The D.C. Defenders returned home to Audi Field on Sunday to host the Houston Roughnecks in UFL Week 2 action. After a disappointing Week 1 loss to the San Antonio Brahmas, the Defenders won their first UFL game with a 23-18 win over the Roughnecks.

Dating back to their time in the XFL, the Defenders have won 10 consecutive games at Audi Field.

Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu completed a 17-yard touchdown to wide receiver Ty Scott with around six minutes remaining to give D.C. a 21-18 lead. The Defenders went for the two-point conversion and succeeded when Ta’amu found tight end Alex Ellis to extend their lead to 23-18.

The Roughnecks had another opportunity to win the game, but the D.C. defense shut down Houston, allowing only 18 yards on six plays to ensure the victory.

Ta’amu completed 16 of 32 passes for 212 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Next up for the Defenders are the Arlington Renegades next week in Texas. It’s a rematch of the 2023 XFL championship, where the Renegades pulled off a big upset over the Defenders.

In case you were wondering, the beer snake is alive and well at Audi Field.

Former Panthers CB Corn Elder scores on 98-yard pick-six for UFL’s Roughnecks

We got a little former Panther-on-former Panther action in the UFL this weekend.

Matt Corral isn’t the only former Carolina Panther who’s made an early impression in the UFL.

On Sunday afternoon, the Houston Roughnecks met up with the DC Defenders as part of the league’s second week of action. Currently sitting in Houston’s secondary is a familiar name in cornerback Corn Elder, who sat on this pass from Defenders quarterback (and another ex-Panther) Jordan Ta’amu:

Elder, who brought the interception back for the game’s first points, spoke about the wild 98-yard return on the Roughnecks sideline shortly after:

Now 29 years old, Elder was selected by the Panthers in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft. The Murfreesboro, Tenn. native came into the league as a first-team All-ACC selection from the University of Miami (Fla.), where he stayed for four seasons.

He ultimately racked up three stints with the Panthers up until 2021. Elder appeared in 30 games for Carolina, totaling 43 combined tackles, a forced fumble and three passes defensed.
