Report: Patriots to sign two veteran tight ends

A pair of competitors for the position.

The New England Patriots are signing a pair of veteran tight ends, Alex Ellis and Paul Butler, according to NESN’s Doug Kyed.

The pair of free agents are late additions to the team before the first padded practice of training camp. They will have to test negative on multiple occasions for COVID-19 before practicing with the team. New England seemed to be on the verge of signing tight end Jordan Leggett, but that signing didn’t come together.

Ellis entered the NFL in 2016 as an undrafted free agent. He has bounced around the league, with the Patriots being his sixth NFL team. He has recorded just three receptions for 11 yards.

Butler has spent time with the Oakland Raiders since entering the NFL in 2018. He has not recorded a reception in his pro career.

The two tight ends join a group which features Ryan Izzo, Devin Asiasi, Dalton Keene, Jake Burt and Rashod Berry.

Other players signed who spent time with the Eagles this season included Albert Huggins, Marken Michel, Tremon Smith, and former Giants signal-caller, Kyle Lauletta.

Cracraft is a young, speedy wide receiver that could develop into a goto player out of the slot.

The Philadelphia Eagles may have a decision to make in regard to resting tight end Zach Ertz against the Giants while risking playing a must-win game without the NFC’s top tight end.

Eagles’ head coach Doug Pederson met with the media on Monday morning, and confirmed that Ertz is dealing with a rib injury that has been “affected”.

Ertz is the Eagles’ best skill player currently and he’ll likely spend the week determining his pain threshold as the team weighs the pros and cons of playing him with a likely home playoff game looming two weeks from now.

The Philadelphia Eagles have swapped out tight ends on the practice squad, signing Alex Ellis to a deal and releasing Scott Orndoff from the practice squad.

Ellis was waived/injured in October to make room for cornerback Ryan Lewis before the Eagles Week 5 win over the New York Jets.

The Eagles currently have three tight ends on their 53-man roster in Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, and Josh Perkins.
