Sean Strickland labels Uriah Hall as a ‘damn good gatekeeper’ going into UFC on ESPN 28

Sean Strickland has a bit of a love-hate relationship with former training partner and UFC on ESPN 28 main event opponent Uriah Hall.

[autotag]Sean Strickland[/autotag] has a bit of a love-hate relationship with former training partner and UFC on ESPN 28 main event opponent [autotag]Uriah Hall[/autotag].

Strickland (17-9 MMA, 10-7 UFC) said Hall (23-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) is a “c*nt” in the most gleeful way possible, and they used to get good rounds in together at Reign Training Center in California years ago. Now their paths have crossed as they try to trend upward in the UFC middleweight division.

Although Strickland has made it very clear that things like title belts aren’t exactly that important to him, he knows what’s at stake going into the ESPN-televised headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

“The cool thing about Uriah is he’s like a gatekeeper,” Strickland told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC on ESPN 28 media day. “I don’t want to undersell Uriah and say he’s a gatekeeper, but he’s a damn good gatekeeper. He’s a guy you beat and it propels you into one or two (wins) away from a title shot. It’s a very interesting thing to think it’s within your grasp.”

Strickland is currently riding a four-fight winning streak in the octagon at 185 pounds. He’s unbeaten in his career when fighting at middleweight, having won all 16 of his contests in the weight class.

Having been in the UFC since 2014, Strickland hasn’t even got as far as to co-headline a card. Now he’s in the top spot, but it doesn’t seem to mean much – at least not yet.

“It is what it is,” Strickland said. “It’s a thing people try to make special, but it’s just another day, just another fight. It’s going to be special if I win. If I got knocked out I’m going to look back like, ‘F*ck, this sucked.'”

Strickland is relatively confident in his ability to not get knocked out, though. He knows quite a bit already about what Hall brings to the table, and thinks trained with enough different looks that he’s not going to be taken aback by anything on fight night.

“I train a lot with Raymond Daniels for many years,” Strickland said. “But I think with Uriah, it’s hard to replicate that. He’s a specialist where it’s very difficult to find guys who can do that well. But at the end of the day, just keep your f*cking hands up.”

With Mounir Lazzez out, Jared Gooden targeted as replacement to face Niklas Stolze at UFC on ESPN 28

Mounir Lazzez won’t get to make his U.S. debut and Jared Gooden is now targeted to face Niklas Stolze at UFC on ESPN 28.

[autotag]Mounir Lazzez[/autotag] won’t get to make his U.S. debut just yet.

Lazzez (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has been forced out of UFC on ESPN 28 due to visa issues and [autotag]Jared Gooden[/autotag] (17-6 MMA, 0-2 UFC) is targeted to step in on short notice to face [autotag]Niklas Stolze[/autotag] (12-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) on Saturday.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking Tuesday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Stolze took to Instagram Tuesday night to vent his frustration at the lack of communication between Lazzez’s camp and the UFC, where he only found out about the withdrawal on fight week.

Lazzez wasn’t happy with Stolze’s initial comments, vowing to make him pay whenever they cross paths.

Germany’s Stolze will be in search of his first UFC win. The 28-year-old saw his four-fight winning streak snapped in his promotional debut when he dropped a unanimous decision to Ramazan Emeev at UFC on ESPN 14 in July.

After dropping back-to-back unanimous decision losses to Alan Jouban and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, Gooden will also be in search of his first UFC win. A Titan FC, LFA, and Island Fights veteran, “Nite Train” has finished 13 of his 17 pro wins.

With the change, the UFC on ESPN 28 card lineup now includes:

MAIN CARD (ESPN, ESPN+, 9 p.m. ET)

  • Uriah Hall vs. Sean Strickland
  • Niklas Stolze vs. Jared Gooden
  • Cheyanne Buys vs. Gloria de Paula

Spinning Back Clique: What’s next for Paige VanZant? T.J. Dillashaw? And what’s at stake with Patricio Freire vs. A.J. McKee?

Check out this week’s “Spinning Back Clique” where the panel discusses the hottest topics in the world of MMA.

Check out the latest edition of “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly show that takes a quick spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts.

This week, our panel discusses the futures of T.J. Dillashaw and Paige VanZant, while also looking back to an incredible UFC on ESPN 27 event, as well as previewing a busy weekend that includes UFC on ESPN 28 and Bellator 263.

Our “Spinning Back Clique” panel this week of Mike Bohn, Nolan King and “Gorgeous” George Garica discusses these topics and more, along with host John Morgan.

  • This past weekend, [autotag]T.J. Dillashaw[/autotag] returned from a two-year suspension and picked up a win over top contender Cory Sandhagen at UFC on ESPN 27. Dillashaw has made it clear he wants his belt back and wants the winner of the upcoming Aljamain Steling vs. Petr Yan rematch, but that’s not for another three months, so he may need to take another fight to stay busy. Is there a fight to make for Dillashaw in the meantime, or has he done enough to get a title shot?
  • UFC on ESPN 27 featured a number of other fantastic performances on that card, which was really exciting from start to finish. Who was the standout performer for you? Anyone make a statement that will stick with you?
  • Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship held an event this past weekend, as well, and Rachael Ostovich picked up a decision win over [autotag]Paige VanZant[/autotag], who is now 0-2 in the promotion. VanZant was still smiling as she gave Instagram the old Stockton salute, but where does she go from here? Does she stick with BKFC, or is a return to MMA in order? What’s the move?
  • In one of the biggest fights in Bellator history, [autotag]Patricio Freire[/autotag] and [autotag]A.J. McKee[/autotag] headline this weekend’s Bellator 263 event for both the promotion’s featherweight title and a grand prix belt. A lot is on the line here, but who’s facing the most pressure in this moment – and does either fighter have a clear edge in the matchup?
  • Looking ahead to this weekend, [autotag]Uriah Hall[/autotag] and [autotag]Sean Strickland[/autotag] headline UFC on ESPN 28. Both fighters bring four-fight win streaks into this matchup and are looking to prove they belong among the division’s elite. Who’s got more on the line in this contest – and are there any other fights on this card we should be watching for this weekend?

Hope you enjoy this week’s show. Watch the full episode of “Spinning Back Clique” above.

Sam Alvey reveals fight against Roman Kopylov is off at UFC on ESPN 28

Sam Alvey will not be competing at UFC on ESPN 28, but his return to action is only delayed a month.

One of the friendliest personalities in MMA will not be competing at UFC on ESPN 28 on Saturday.

[autotag]Sam Alvey[/autotag] was set to face [autotag]Roman Kopylov[/autotag] on the main card in a middleweight bout but the fight has fallen apart because Kopylov (8-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) could not make it into the U.S. due to “various reasons” according to Alvey.

Alvey (33-15-1 MMA, 10-10-1 UFC) revealed the update via TikTok on Monday evening, laying out the story of how he received the news that his fight is now off and what the UFC plans to do about it.

https://www.tiktok.com/@smilensam/video/6989355572088950021?lang=en&is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1

Relaying the message using the TikTok “put a finger down” storytelling trend, Alvey said his opponent couldn’t make it in the country just as he was about to head to the airport to fly to Las Vegas. He was told a search for a replacement opponent was underway, so he continued his journey towards the airport.

According to Alvey, as he arrived at the airport he received a text message that no opponent could be found, but another fight a month later could be made with a different opponent.

Although he did not reveal the name of the new opponent during the video, he said he accepted the offer and also received compensation from the promotion for his troubles.

Alvey has been willing to help out the promotion in any way he can, but likely needs to get his hand raised in his next outing considering he is winless in his last six fights. His last victory came via split decision in a light heavyweight bout against Gian Villante in June 2018.

UFC on ESPN 28 was originally scheduled for 15 bouts and is now down to 13 following the loss of Alvey vs. Kopylov and removal of the co-main event between Chris Daukaus vs. Shamil Abdurakhimov.

The UFC on ESPN 28 card lineup now includes:

MAIN CARD (ESPN, ESPN+, 9 p.m. ET)

  • Uriah Hall vs. Sean Strickland
  • Mounir Lazzez vs. Niklas Stolze
  • Cheyanne Buys vs. Gloria de Paula
  • Kyung Ho Kang vs. Rani Yahya
  • Zarrukh Adashev vs. Ryan Benoit
  • Bryan Barberena vs. Jason Witt

PRELIMINARY CARD (ESPN, ESPN+, 6 p.m. ET)

  • Nicco Montano vs. Wu Yanan
  • Collin Anglin vs. Melsik Baghdasaryan
  • Rafa Garcia vs. Chris Gruetzemacher

UFC on ESPN 28 loses Chris Daukaus vs Shamil Abdurakhimov co-main bout

UFC on ESPN 28 has lost its heavyweight co-main event between Chris Daukaus and Shamil Abdurakhimov.

UFC on ESPN 28‘s lineup has taken a big hit.

The scheduled co-main event between heavyweights [autotag]Chris Daukaus[/autotag] and [autotag]Shamil Abdurakhimov[/autotag] has been removed from the event due to undisclosed reasons, MMA Junkie has confirmed following an initial report from TSN.

This bout was originally scheduled to take place at UFC on ESPN 27, however, due to a positive COVID-19 test in Abdurakhimov’s (20-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) camp, the fight was moved to a new date.

Issues have since risen again from Abdurakhimov’s side, and the fight is being moved for the second time to another date in the coming weeks, MMA Junkie was told by a source familiar with the situation.

Daukaus (11-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC) will be searching for his fourth consecutive UFC victory and his second of the calendar year after defeating Aleksei Oleinik by first-round TKO in February.

Abdurakhimov was last in action at UFC 242, where he fell to Curtis Blaydes by second-round stoppage. He was on a three-fight win streak before the bout. Since then, a series of events with multiple opponents have prevented his return to action.

The UFC on ESPN 28 lineup now includes:

  • Uriah Hall vs. Sean Strickland
  • Cheyanne Buys vs. Gloria de Paula
  • Kyung Ho Kang vs. Rani Yahya
  • Bryan Barberena vs. Jason Witt
  • Mounir Lazzez vs. Niklas Stolze
  • Nicco Montano  vs. Wu Yanan

Matchup Roundup: New UFC and Bellator fights announced in the past week (July 19-25)

All the UFC and Bellator fight announcements that were broken or confirmed by MMA Junkie in the past week.

MMA fight announcements are hard to follow. With so many outlets and channels available, it’s nearly impossible to organize.

But here at MMA Junkie, we’ve got your back.

Each week, we’ll compile all the newly surfaced fights in one spot. Every Monday, expect a feature listing everything you might have missed from the UFC or Bellator.

Here are the fight announcements that were broken or confirmed by MMA Junkie from July 19-25:

Dooho Choi ‘so sorry’ to withdraw from UFC on ESPN 28; Kai Kamaka to fight Danny Chavez

Dooho Choi won’t be making his long-awaited return to the octagon on July 31, and Danny Chavez will now face Kai Kamaka.

[autotag]Dooho Choi[/autotag] won’t be making his long-awaited return to the octagon July 31 after all.

Choi (14-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC) has been forced out of UFC on ESPN 28 due to injury, and [autotag]Kai Kamaka[/autotag] (8-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) will step in on short notice to face [autotag]Danny Chavez[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC).

Both fighters confirmed the booking on social media following an initial report from MMA Island.

“The Korean Superboy” took to Instagram to release a statement on his withdrawal, claiming that a shoulder injury forced him to pull out. Choi hasn’t competed since December 2019 when he was stopped by Charles Jourdain in the second round. The loss marked Choi’s third in a row, but he was able to secure “Fight of the Night” bonuses in all three setbacks.

First of all, I’m so sorry for the fans who are waiting for my fight because I couldn’t have a fight due to injury. I’m in a fight business. That means an unexpected accident can happen at any time and I also think a fighter should take the fight even if he has a some injury because that is way it is.
I injured my shoulder in the last sparring session on Friday night. It was very light and easy rolling but something bad unlucky thing happened.
It is not a huge injury, but definitely it isn’t something that can handle the fight. If I had more time for recover, I would push forward and take the fight, but our camp inevitable decided that two weeks were just too shorts to recover.
I’m so sad that I prepared for this fight very hard and I apologize Danny because he must have prepared so hard for this battle as well.
I’ll be back in good condition soon, I really want to fight Danny when I get back show my best performance for the fans. Wait till I come back it will not be long.

After prevailing in a thrilling “Fight of the Night” battle with Tony Kelley in his UFC debut, Hawaii’s Kamaka has dropped his past two in a row to Jonathan Pearce, and most recently a split decision to T.J. Brown at UFC on ESPN 23 in May.

Meanwhile, Chavez has split his first two UFC appearances. Winner of four of his past five, “The Colombian Warrior” scored a unanimous decision over T.J. Brown but saw his winning streak snapped in his past outing in February when he was defeated by Jared Gordon.

With the changes, the UFC on ESPN 28 lineup includes:

  • Uriah Hall vs. Sean Strickland
  • Bryan Barberena vs. Jason Witt
  • Jinh Yu Frey vs. Ashley Yoder
