UFC on ESPN 28 video: Cheyanne Buys’ perfectly timed head kick stops Gloria de Paula

Cheyanne Buys needed just 60 seconds to dispatch Gloria de Paula in highlight-reel fashion in the UFC on ESPN 28 co-main event.

[autotag]Cheyanne Buys[/autotag] needed just 60 seconds to dispatch [autotag]Gloria de Paula[/autotag] in highlight reel fashion in the UFC on ESPN 28 co-main event.

After a dominant loss in her UFC debut earlier this year, Buys (6-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) was eager to redeem herself against de Paula (5-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) after switching camps and changing her attitude toward the fight game.

It paid off. Buys stopped de Paula in one minute flat courtesy of a perfect head kick that set up a flurry of punches for the TKO.

Check out the replay of the finish below (via Twitter):

Buys was emotional after securing her first UFC win, and even admitted she didn’t foresee herself winning the way she did.

“I didn’t expect that,” Buys said in her post-fight interview with Paul Felder. “She’s a ‘G.’ She has great striking. Honestly, I was going to come in here and wrestle since my last fight I got outwrestled. … It’s been a long road to get here. It’s been a crazy fight camp for me. I left my home in Dallas. I packed up everything and left.”

UFC on ESPN 28 video: Jared Gooden KOs Niklas Stolze on four days’ notice

Jared Gooden admitted prior to UFC on ESPN 28 that he was in a do-or-die situation. He responded with a violent knockout.

[autotag]Jared Gooden[/autotag] admitted prior to UFC on ESPN 28 that he was in a do-or-die situation. He responded with a violent knockout of [autotag]Niklas Stolze[/autotag].

Gooden (18-6 MMA, 1-2 UFC), who stepped into the welterweight bout with Stolze on just four days’ notice as a replacement, needed just 68 seconds to score a violent first-round knockout of Stolze (12-5 MMA, 0-2 UFC) at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Check out the replay of the finish below (via Twitter):

What made the win for Gooden all the more dramatic is that after stepping up to fight, his bout was called off Saturday afternoon due to COVID-19 protocols. However, upon further review, the UFC received medical clearance to reinstate the fight.

That was a good thing for Gooden, who got the job done in spectacular fashion.

“My mentality and my coach changed,” Gooden said in his post-fight interview with Paul Felder. “We knew we couldn’t go to the judges no more, and that’s what changed.”

Nicco Montano’s 7-pound weight miss leads to UFC on ESPN 28 fight cancellation

Nicco Montano vs. Wu Yanan was one of two fights canceled on weigh-ins day for UFC on ESPN 28.

Former women’s flyweight champion [autotag]Nicco Montano[/autotag]’s career struggles continued at the UFC on ESPN 28 official weigh-ins Friday morning.

Montano, set to make her second UFC appearance at bantamweight, weighed in seven pounds over the 136-pound limit at 143. While she stood on the scale, Montano looked physically out of sorts.

Because of the massive miss, Montano’s fight with Wu Yanan was canceled. Montano hasn’t competed since July 13, 2019 when she lost a unanimous decision to Julianna Pena in her return to bantamweight.

Montano (4-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has a history of fight cancellations. After becoming the UFC’s inaugural women’s 125-pound champ through Season 26 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Montano never got to defend her title. She was stripped of the belt after she was hospitalized because of a bad weight cut heading into a scheduled UFC 228 bout with Valentina Shevchenko. Montano recently teased a trailer on a film documenting her experience before UFC 228.

UFC on ESPN 28 marked the fourth fight cancellation since the loss to Pena in July 2019. The reasons for the other three cancellations were injury, COVID-19 and undisclosed.

Montano vs. Yanan wasn’t the only fight removed from UFC on ESPN 28. The bantamweight bout between Trevin Jones and [autotag]Ronnie Lawrence[/autotag] also was canceled after Lawrence was unable to weigh in due to health concerns.

With the cancellations, the UFC on ESPN 28 lineup now includes:

[autotag]Cheyanne Buys[/autotag] (5-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) and [autotag]Gloria de Paula[/autotag] (5-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) both are looking for their first UFC wins in a women’s strawweight fight. Buys, from South Africa, is a -165 favorite and has a big 11-2 lead in the picks.

[autotag]Jared Gooden[/autotag] (17-6 MMA, 0-2 UFC) is stepping up on short notice to take on [autotag]Niklas Stolze[/autotag] (12-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at welterweight. Stolze is a 2-1 favorite at the betting window, and he’s got an 11-2 edge from our pickers.

[autotag]Zarrukh Adashev[/autotag] (3-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) takes on [autotag]Ryan Benoit[/autotag] (10-7 MMA, 3-5 UFC) in a flyweight bout. And despite just a -140 nod from the oddsmakers and betting public for Benoit, he’s running away with the picks at 11-2.

Jared Gooden relishes fighting for job on 4 days’ notice at UFC on ESPN 28

Jared Gooden is going all in on short notice at UFC on ESPN 28.

[autotag]Jared Gooden[/autotag] knows he put himself in position to take on a big challenge at UFC on ESPN 28, but he said he’s up for it.

After losing his first two UFC appearances, Gooden (17-6 MMA, 0-2 UFC) stepped up into a risky position on Saturday when he jumped in as a replacement opponent against Niklas Stolze (12-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC). The welterweight bout is part of the ESPN-televised main card from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Stolze’s original opponent fell out on fight week, and with just four days’ notice, Gooden offered his services. He said he was training hard when the opportunity came, and feels more prepared than the time would indicate.

That puts even more pressure on Gooden to win, he said. A loss could spell the end of his UFC run, but he said he’s keen to go all-in on this opportunity.

“I do believe my back is against the wall, and I kind of like it this way,” Gooden told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Thursday’s UFC on ESPN 28 media day. “Especially short notice. I feel like everything’s against me. Pressure makes diamonds or it works against you. I think it’s going to make me a diamond.”

Watch the video above for Gooden’s complete media day appearance where he discusses the matchup with Stolze and much more.
