(Editor’s note: The new main card fight between Merab Dvalishvili and late replacement Gustavo Lopez happened too late to be included in our reader picks or staff members’ picks, so is not included here.)

The UFC is back Saturday with another event on its home turf.

UFC on ESPN 10 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

[lawrence-related id=526336,526343,526178]

In the main event, recent women’s flyweight title challenger [autotag]Jessica Eye[/autotag] (15-7 MMA, 5-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Cynthia Calvillo[/autotag] (8-1-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC). The oddsmakers have the fight as a virtual pick’em. But the picks from our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts have Eye with a fairly sizable 9-5 lead.

In the co-main event, [autotag]Karl Roberson[/autotag] (9-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) takes on [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] (14-3-1 MMA, 4-2-1 UFC) in a middleweight bout that was supposed to go down in May in Jacksonville, Fla., before Roberson was pulled after a hard weight cut. There’s bad blood now, and Vettori is more than a 2-1 favorite. He’s also got a big 12-2 lead in the picks.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Andre Fili[/autotag] (20-7 MMA, 8-6 UFC) meets [autotag]Charles Jourdain[/autotag] (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at featherweight. Fili is the third biggest favorite on the card, and he’s also got an 11-3 picks lead.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Jordan Espinosa[/autotag] (14-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) fights [autotag]Mark De La Rosa[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 2-4 UFC) in a bantamweight bout. Espinosa is a slight favorite, but he’s got a major 12-2 picks lead.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Calvillo (55 percent), Vettori (71 percent), Fili (75 percent) and Espinosa (60 percent) are the choices.

Darrick Minner says he’s out of Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 10 bout with Jordan Griffin due to illness

Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 10 card has lost a bout the day before the event.

Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 10 card has lost a bout the day before the event.

Darrick Minner (24-11 MMA, 0-1 UFC) on Friday posted on Instagram and Twitter that he’s out of his featherweight fight against Jordan Griffin (18-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC). The bout was set to be the second on the preliminary card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Minner made the announcement while the UFC on ESPN 10 official weigh-ins still were going on in Las Vegas. He has not weighed in, but Griffin was the second fighter on the scale and hit the mark at 146 pounds.

Minner said in his post that his weight cut was “going super smooth” until he spent many hours vomiting.

“Sad to say but tomorrow I won’t be fighting,” Minner posted. “Long story short, the weight cut was going super smooth, everything on point. Came back to nap before I hit the last 5 lbs. Woke up after a two hour nap, started throwing up and didn’t stop for 6-7 hours. Still throwing up this morning but it has slowed down. The UFC performance institute nutrition and staff tried everything to get my stomach under control before they had to make the call to start rehydrating. Shout out to them, they are super knowledgeable and professional. I want to apologize to my opponent Jordan Griffin and his camp, stepped up to give us a fight. We will get this set up at a later date. Thanks to the UFC for giving me another opportunity, we will get back to work and be ready for the next one. Sorry my body couldn’t make this happen.”

https://twitter.com/DarrickMinner/status/1271478345834754048/

Minner was looking to get back in the win column after a second-round submission loss to Grant Dawson in his promotional debut in February at UFC on ESPN+ 27. Griffin rebounded from a two-fight skid in February with a submission of T.J. Brown.

With the change, the UFC on ESPN 10 lineup includes:

5 burning questions heading into UFC on ESPN 10

MMA Junkie’s Simon Head takes a look at the five biggest storylines ahead of UFC on ESPN 10 in Las Vegas.

UFC on ESPN 10 features a card packed with up-and-coming talent looking to set themselves up for bigger tests later in the year.

In the main event, former women’s flyweight title challenger [autotag]Jessica Eye[/autotag] will look to build more momentum as she welcomes former strawweight contender [autotag]Cynthia Calvillo[/autotag] to the 125-pound division, while the co-main event features a middleweight grudge match as [autotag]Karl Roberson[/autotag] and [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] aim to push themselves toward the division’s big names with a win.

UFC on ESPN 10 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Let’s take a look at five burning questions heading into the event.

****

Can Jessica Eye move one step closer to a second title shot?

Don’t let the naysayers tell you any different. This fight has huge significance for the top of the UFC women’s flyweight division. And for Jessica Eye, it’s the chance to build more momentum as she looks to build the strongest possible case for a rematch with reigning champ Valentina Shevchenko.

Eye’s highlight-reel head-kick knockout loss to “Bullet” remains her only flyweight defeat in the UFC and, after bouncing back with a decision win over Viviane Araujo in her last outing, Eye (15-7 MMA, 5-6 UFC) will be keen to secure a high-profile victory under the main event spotlight on Saturday night.

Standing in her way is Calvillo, who is moving up from strawweight to make her flyweight debut. But if Eye can produce a strong performance and turn back the challenge of the flyweight division’s dangerous new arrival, “Evil” Eye might not be too far away from the chance to avenge her loss to Shevchenko and capture UFC gold.

Mark De La Rosa unfazed by potential UFC on ESPN 10 circumstances

Mark De La Rosa might have his back up against the wall – but he’s not fazed.

[autotag]Mark De La Rosa[/autotag] isn’t thinking about the ramifications of a loss at UFC on ESPN 10.

Currently, on a three-fight skid, De La Rosa (11-4 MMA, 2-4 UFC) likely will have his back up against the wall on Saturday. Regardless of the potential scenario, De La Rosa displayed a nonchalant, laid-back demeanor at Thursday’s virtual pre-fight media day.

“As far as pressure for me, there’s a lot of things I’m grateful for,” De La Rosa told MMA Junkie. “Just being stuck at home and seeing people suffer and seeing people not able to pay their bills or put food on the table. I’m definitely coming home with two checks on Saturday.”

Unlike many married fighters, De La Rosa is in a unique situation being the husband of UFC women’s flyweight Montana De La Rosa. The couple’s income largely depends on whether or not they fight, so the UFC’s swift return to action was welcomed by the De La Rosa’s with open arms.

“It’s awesome, man,” De La Rosa said. “I’m super, super grateful for the opportunity and happy I was one of the chosen few.”

[lawrence-related id=526354,526343,526336]

As for his matchup with Jordan Espinosa, De La Rosa hinted he’s figured him out. According to De La Rosa, Espinosa (14-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) hasn’t evolved in recent fights and is predictable in nature.

“I don’t see anything different from him,” De La Rosa said. “I don’t see him as a different fighter. He fights the same way every time – super athletic, super jittery. He throws the same combos, dances, moves – a super athletic, exciting fighter. I’m going to try to impose my will with a pressure he’s never seen before.”

UFC on ESPN 10 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Jordan Espinosa may have found a way to use back-to-back submission losses to his advantage

With back-to-back losses, Jordan Espinosa has pressure on him heading into Saturday – but is finding a way to make that work for him.

With back-to-back losses, [autotag]Jordan Espinosa[/autotag] has a little pressure on him heading into Saturday.

But his mindset is to not think about things much differently than normal, and in some ways he even wonders if the consecutive setbacks might work to his advantage.

Espinosa (14-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) meets Mark De La Rosa (11-4 MMA, 2-4 UFC) in a bantamweight bout at UFC on ESPN 10, which takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Because Espinosa’s most recent two losses were first-round submissions to Matt Schnell and Alex Perez, De La Rosa doesn’t have as much to go off of, Espinosa reasons.

“The silver lining with having the two losses in a row and them being first-round submissions is that I didn’t get to really show what I was capable of,” Espinosa said during a Thursday virtual media day ahead of the event. “My opponent and my future opponents probably think I suck. They haven’t gotten to see anything in my game except for maybe my lack of jiu-jitsu defense.

“But that’s good for me. I still have a lot that I can show and I feel like that keeps me dangerous, in a sense. I always feel like my job’s never secure. I’m never super comfortable. I always treat the fights the same. I’m coming into this fight like it’s my final fight in the UFC.”

[lawrence-related id=526178,525486]

Espinosa, who’s based in Albuquerque, N.M., said he made a trip to Missouri to work with UFC welterweight James Krause and his team for the last portion of his training camp, in part because the stay-at-home orders there were less stringent than the ones in New Mexico. He said that change of pace in training should pay off for him Saturday.

But he’s also fighting an opponent in De La Rosa that he was booked to meet in November 2018 for his UFC debut before he was forced out with a knee injury. Consequently, De La Rosa has been on Espinosa’s radar for a while. And so, too, will the environment on fight night seem familiar to him since fighting in front of no fans at the UFC Apex will be similar to his pair of appearances on Dana White’s Contender Series.

“I had a training camp for (De La Rosa) a year and a half ago,” Espinosa said. “We’ve had some of the same opponents, and I’m very familiar with his style. Honestly, it was an easy transition.

“Compared to most of the other guys on the card, it’s going to be more familiar for me. I fought on the Contender Series twice. The second time, I was so calm. Everything felt really relaxed and I was so comfortable. I expect this to go the same.”

De La Rosa has had struggles of his own. He’s on a three-fight skid and has been bouncing around between flyweight and bantamweight. He’s in as much of a must-win situation as Espinosa is, if not more.

The oddsmakers have Espinosa a slight favorite, and if he was searching for a reason why he thinks De La Rosa is up against someone he hasn’t seen before.

“He hasn’t really fought guys that move like me,” Espinosa said. “… I’m a lot more mobile. I’m a lot more dynamic. I get in and out. He hasn’t fought anyone like that. He kind of fights the opposite – he’ll pressure and bite down and throw. He has good jiu-jitsu, (and) not so great wrestling. I’m strong in my wrestling. It doesn’t seem like he has much power. But he’s tough. He’s willing to take a shot to give a few. But I think where my strengths are, if I want to take him to the ground, I can and if I want to keep it on the feet and frustrate him, I think I can do that, too.”

Entering UFC on ESPN 10, Charles Jourdain focused on being conquerer – not king

Charles Jourdain said he’s getting the “king” treatment during his third UFC fight week – and it’s making him uncomfortable.

[autotag]Charles Jourdain[/autotag] says he’s getting the “king” treatment during his third UFC fight week – and it’s making him uncomfortable.

Three days prior to UFC on ESPN 10, Jourdain (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) told media Thursday on a pre-fight video call that being spoiled isn’t his thing.

“I always wanted to fight in Vegas,” Jourdain told MMA Junkie. “It’s a dream coming true. Of course, the circumstances make it a little less special, to be honest – but I love it. The way the UFC is treating us, I almost feel uncomfortable. I feel treated (like) a king. For me, I always see me as a conquerer – not as a king, yet.”

While rising up the regional ranks, Jourdain watched Andre Fili’s journey through the UFC featherweight division. On Saturday night, he’ll be fighting Fili (20-7 MMA, 8-6 UFC), which he expects to be a surreal experience.

“YouTube has been one of my greatest teachers,” Jourdain said. “Watching those guys from Team Alpha Male: Urijah Faber, T.J. Dillashaw, Cody Garbrandt – all those guys I’ve been always been a fan of their team and the way they do things. I haven’t seen him yet personally, but it’s going to be weird. … Yeah, it’s going to be special.”

[lawrence-related id=526141,526336,526241]

UFC on ESPN 10 has been the subject of criticism online for its lack of big-name stars. A card filled with mostly fresh faces and unranked competitors doesn’t mean the entertainment value will be absent, Jourdain said.

“Sometimes people expect these type of cards to be boring, but sometimes you see diamonds in the rough,” Jourdain said. “I think I’m one of those, and it’s a great opportunity to prove my worth. Yeah, straight up, no matter how big or how small the card is, I’m just ready to prove to the world who I am.”

UFC on ESPN 10 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

As long as Andre Fili can’t get two close losses back, he’s at UFC on ESPN 10 to have fun

The way Andre Fili looks at things, he should be going after a seven-fight winning streak – not just trying to get back in the win column.

The way [autotag]Andre Fili[/autotag] chooses to look at things, he should be going after a seven-fight winning streak – not trying to just get back in the win column.

After a solid run of four wins in five fights, including a bonus-winning knockout of Sheymon Moraes 11 months ago, Fili was outworked by Sodiq Yusuff in January at UFC 246. The lone loss in his five-fight run before that came to Michael Johnson in a split call and included wins over Myles Jury and Dennis Bermudez.

Getting back into the win column is of the utmost importance to get some momentum back on paper, but Fili thinks he won the Yusuff fight, as well as the Johnson bout. But he doesn’t think he needs to change anything after his loss to Yusuff.

“I think you just do more of the same,” Fili said during a Thursday virtual media day ahead of UFC on ESPN 10. “I think I’m on the right track – there’s just been a few hiccups. I think I won the Sodiq fight. I definitely think I won the Michael Johnson fight. You take those two decisions and turn them the right way, and I’m on a six-fight streak. That’s what I choose to focus on.”

Fili (20-7 MMA, 8-6 UFC) takes on Charles Jourdain (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) in a featherweight bout at UFC on ESPN 10 on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Their main-card fight airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

[lawrence-related id=506586,503829]

In Jourdain, Fili has an opponent who got back on the upswing this past December with a second-round knockout of Doo Ho Choi at UFC on ESPN+ 23. Jourdain was a 3-1 underdog in the fight and got back in the win column after a loss to Des Green earlier in the year in his promotional debut.

Fili knows Jourdain has knockout power, the same as he showed against Moraes when he became the first fighter to knock the Brazilian out.

“He’s aggressive,” Fili said. “He’s got flying knees – you’ve got to watch out for that. He’s pretty athletic, and every shot he throws, you can tell he believes in hi striking. I’m excited to put that to the test.”

This time around for Fili, it’ll be about trying to enjoy the experience a little more and keeping some of the stress on the back burner.

“I really think I was pretty sharp against Sodiq, but Sodiq’s a great fighter,” Fili said. “I’m going to go out this time and really have more fun and just get in a fight. You’ve got to find a balance, and also get in a fist fight. I’m going to go out and have fun and just impose my will.”
