Dana White: Merab Dvalishvili not fighting friend Aljamain Sterling would be ‘a really bad idea’

Dana White thinks Merab Dvalishvili should reconsider his position of not fighting Aljamain Sterling for the bantamweight title.

UFC president [autotag]Dana White[/autotag] believes bantamweight contender [autotag]Merab Dvalishvili[/autotag] has a serious decision to make about his career.

After setting a record for takedown attempts in the UFC Fight Night 221 main event at The Theater at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas, Dvalishvili won a dominant unanimous decision over former champion Petr Yan. Entering the fight at No. 2 in the USA TODAY SPORTS/MMA Junkie bantamweight rankings, Dvalishvili only had one man ahead of him, and that’s his best friend and main training partner, the champ [autotag]Aljamain Sterling[/autotag].

Considering his dominant display and his ranking in the division, the next stop for most fighters would be a shot at the title. But for Dvalishvili, there is a bit of a predicament, because he and his friend Sterling have an agreement to not fight each other.

White, who has seen this scenario play out a few times in the past, says that Dvalishvili should reconsider that arrangement.

“I don’t remember who the hell I was talking to the other day about this, and I was like, ‘Yeah, we don’t have to deal with that bullsh*t anymore,'” White told reporters during a news conference Saturday. “You know, back in the early days, the camps were so small, you didn’t have a lot of different options. So, we had a lot of these guys saying, ‘Oh, he’s my friend, he’s my friend.’

“You can still be friends and want what your friend has, you know what I mean? It would be a really bad idea for Merab to go down that path.”

As White touched on, there have been a number of instances in the past when friends are heading on a collision course, but refuse to fight each other for the promotion’s championship.

From Anderson Silva refusing to fight Lyoto Machida, Daniel Cormier saying he would change divisions rather than fight Cain Velasquez, or Kamaru Usman stating he would rather there be two African champions than one when asked if he would challenge Israel Adesanya – friends have created pacts despite how much the fans or the promotion wants to see them fight each other.

Sterling has repeatedly stated he will not fight Dvalishvili in an effort to prevent ruining their friendship. At UFC 288, Sterling will look to defend his title against the returning former champ Henry Cejudo. A move to featherweight could be on the horizon for Sterling afterward, although that’s not a decision set in stone.

Dvalishvili said he wants to stay active and there are other fights he could take, but above all, fighting Sterling is off the table. Despite the situation, the Georgian fighter sees two best friends at the top of the division as “a good problem to have,” but White disagrees.

“Does Merab want a shot at the title or would Merab rather have people under him jump over him, and him have to take on all these different tough guys, when he’s not getting a title shot when he’s next in line for it?” White said. “That’s a personal decision that he needs to make. If that’s what he wants to do, I can tell you how that story ends, and it’s not a good ending to that story. He’s a big boy, he can figure that out on his own.”

NAC temporarily suspends UFC’s Ilir Latifi after in-cage interview admitting he fought with staph infection

Following his UFC Fight Night 211 win, Ilir Latifi revealed to the world he fought with a fever and swollen leg caused by a staph infection.

[autotag]Ilir Latifi[/autotag] is facing disciplinary action for an admission he made in the cage after his recent win at UFC Fight Night 211.

At a monthly Nevada Athletic Commission meeting held Tuesday, Latifi was temporarily suspended for admitting to knowingly competing with a staph infection in his Oct. 1 win vs. Aleksei Oleinik. The suspension will end when a resolution on disciplinary action is reached.

“Even this week, my leg is swollen,” Latifi told commentator Paul Felder post-fight on the broadcast. “I didn’t even tell my coaches, but I got a staph infection two days ago. As you can see, my leg is all swollen. It’s an amazing sport, but the margins are so small. You put in so much work, and this thing happens the last day. Today, actually when I woke up, my leg was swollen. I was like, ‘I can’t cancel again.’ So I had to fight like this with a fever and a staph infection. That’s part of being a fighter.”

According to the NAC, Latifi failed to inform the promotion or commission of his infection prior to admitting it on camera. The commission called the decision “risky” and added the “behavior cannot be tolerated.”

The NAC has been in touch with Latifi, whom it described as “remorseful.” Latifi will not be permitted to compete until an agreement is reached and announced.

Latifi, 40, also indicated in his in-cage interview the win over Oleinik could be his final MMA fight. If so, he finishes on a two-fight winning streak with a 16-8 overall record and 9-6 in the UFC.

Randy Brown critical of decision win over Francisco Trinaldo: ‘I know I can do better’

Randy Brown reflects on his unanimous decision win over Francisco Trinaldo at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 211.

[autotag]Randy Brown[/autotag] is not happy with how things went down in his return to the octgaon.

The welterweight picked up a unanimous decision win over veteran Francisco Trinaldo in the co-main event of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 211 in Las Vegas. But despite getting his hand raised and improving his winning streak to four, Randy Brown (16-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) wasn’t content with his showing.

“I did what I had to do,” Brown said on the ESPN+ post-fight show. “I faced some adversity. I’m tired of facing adversity, but I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do. I’ve got to give him his props, man. Francisco Trinaldo, Uncle Trinaldo – the dude is tough. He’s tough, and he was a good test for me. Just his experience was crazy. His body was tough – just dense. Most guys, you hit them with certain stuff, and they react. They back up. He did not take a step backwards at all. Shout out to him.

“I’m not overly thrilled, because I know I can do better. But the performances will be there. You guys are happy, I noticed Dana (White) was happy. I’m my biggest critic, but that’s how it is.”

[lawrence-related id=2586191,2586080]

With consecutive wins over Alex Oliveira, Jared Gooden, Khaos Williams and now Trinaldo, Brown currently is on the best run of his UFC career. The 32-year-old hopes to log a third fight in 2022 and return to the octagon close to the end of the year.

“I’m ready,” Brown said. “I just want to bounce back in, get one more (fight) for the year. I just want to keep moving forward and keep running it up. Let me get a check. I want to take care of me and my family. That’s what it’s about.

“I’m ready to bounce back and continue the journey and just keep laying down the legacy.”
