Darren Till says his doubters have ‘a special place in my heart’ ahead of UFC Fight Night 191

It’s been more than 13 months since Darren Till set foot in the octagon, and while the journey back has been difficult, he says he’s ready.

LAS VEGAS – It’s been more than 13 months since [autotag]Darren Till[/autotag] set foot in the octagon, and while the journey to UFC Fight Night 191 has been a difficult one, “The Gorilla” believes he’s ready to shine once again.

“I’m just happy to be here,” Till told MMA Junkie at Wednesday’s media day at the UFC Apex. “It’s tough. It’s tough to have injuries and go through camps after camps and spend a lot of money and, you know, obviously have to pull out. I mean, last fight was very unfortunate because it was only like two or three weeks before where I broke my collarbone. I mean, if it was 10 weeks before the fight and I broke my collarbone, I was definitely still fighting. But it’s just – it reminds me a lot of like when Dominick Cruz was getting a lot of setbacks and injuries. You’ve just got come through them, and you’ve got to come through them, and here I am a few days before, and I’m a very happy man.”

Three years ago, Till was nearly at the top of the UFC’s welterweight division, challenging then-champ Tyron Woodley for the belt in just his seventh appearance for the promotion. Unfortunately for Till, he came up short that night, and he’s had a difficult road in the time since.

Currently just 1-3 in his past four appearances, Till has has to battle through a handful of injuries during the time away, including the broken collarbone that forced him to withdraw from a planned April meeting with Marvin Vettori.

But Till said the time away has forced him to focus on the things that he can control.

“It’s been a test, obviously, but it’s just a testament to my will,” Till said. “Like even this camp, I’ve had injuries, and I think I speak for every fighter, we all get our injuries. It’s just how you get through them. But as time goes on now – and as I’m getting older and as I’m getting wiser, hopefully – I know I’ve got a purpose in life, and I keep saying this all week, like, I wake up with purpose, and I know what I want and what I want to be and who I am – just all that stuff together.

“It’s just, like, I’m out for something, and I’m not going to stop until I get it, so no injury, no whatever can stop me on this little journey I’m on, and it’s my journey, and there’s people on it. There’s people who come on the journey and then come off the journey, and it’s sort of like the hype train thing. But I’m driving towards something, and I’ve got so much motivation for it.”

Till (18-3-1 MMA, 6-3-1 UFC) returns to action in the headlining bout of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 191 event, which streams live on ESPN+. He faces Derek Brunson (22-7 MMA, 13-5 UFC) in a meaningful clash in the UFC’s 185-pound division, with Brunson sitting at No. 5 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie middleweight rankings, and Till checking in at No. 10.

[lawrence-related id=881802,819806]

An admitted social media troll, Till has fired a few barbs online ahead of the clash but said he’s fully aware of what he faces on Saturday. With Brunson sporting a four-fight winning streak that includes the likes of Kevin Holland, Edmen Shahbazyan and Ian Heinisch, Till knows he’ll have a challenge in the cage.

“I think he’s class,” Till said. “I’ve got nothing towards Derek. I think he’s a nice guy. I like his team. I like his management. He’s here to do a job Saturday. He’s been doing a job. He’s been doing more job than me. He’s been beating these guys. But I’ll keep saying it: This is not disrespecting anyone, but I ain’t no Kevin Holland, and I ain’t no Shahbazyan.

“I’m a different animal coming in there Saturday. I’ve got fight IQ. I’m getting more ferocious with age, and and it seems like he’s getting better with age. I mean, I know he’s 37 today, but he seems like blonde Brunson is the f*cking man, mate, so you know, I’m prepared for Saturday, mate. I’ve done all my work. I’ve done all my pads, all my sparring. I’m ready for whatever comes.”

If there’s one truth in MMA, it seems to be that winning takes care of everything. Sure, there have been some stumbles in recent times, but at just 28, it’s hard to believe the book is completely written on Till. He certainly doesn’t think so, but he’s seen those who have, and he wants them all to know he’s using that doubt to fuel his next rise.

“Listen, (this fight) is very important, but I take all pressure off my shoulders,” Till said. “I’m fighting the best out there, and anything can happen. I know I’m going in there Saturday, and I know 100 percent I’m going to win this fight. I know that for a fact, but things can happen, and listen, all these people who jumped on the train, mostly the people who jumped off the train – as I like to call them, the doubters – they’ve got a special place in my heart.

“You know when I’m like on the treadmill in the Institute, and I’m running out my little shoes and it’s getting to like the 45th minute and I’m thinking, ‘Ah, you can just do it. You can stop this five minutes before,’ and I’m like, ‘Not a chance. I’m going to the 45, 50-minute run that I set out to do – eight miles and stuff like that – and all the other times when I’m doing my 10 five-minute pads with Colin (Heron), it’s like, ‘Ah, do I just coast this round?’ No! Hit harder, you know what I mean? So you doubters, you’ve got a special place in my heart.”

Derek Brunson aims to earn title shot with Darren Till win – and avoid becoming a meme

Derek Brunson knows there is much at stake in his UFC Fight Night 191 headliner with Darren Till, and not all of it boils down to rankings.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Derek Brunson[/autotag] knows there is much at stake in his UFC Fight Night 191 headliner with [autotag]Darren Till[/autotag], and not all of it boils down to where he’ll stand in the rankings.

With Till firmly established as one of the sport’s biggest trolls on social media, Brunson isn’t about to give him ammunition.

“I mean, it’s all fun and games,” Brunson said of the pair’s pre-fight banter. “We took our jabs at each other, had a little bit of fun. Now it’s fight week. It’s business time, so the goal is to not be the person that’s going to be a meme after this, you know what I mean?”

Brunson (22-7 MMA, 13-5 UFC) and Till (18-3-1 MMA, 6-3-1 UFC) headline Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 191 event, which takes place at the UFC Apex and streams live on ESPN+. It’s a big fight at 185 pounds, with Brunson coming in ranked No. 5 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie middleweight rankings and Till checking in at No. 10.

But it feels especially big for Brunson, who is riding a four-fight winning streak and now headlines his third consecutive UFC event.

“I would definitely say this is the best stretch of my career,” Brunson told MMA Junkie. “We’re getting it done against these young, exciting, hungry guys who’ve been putting together streaks, earning a fight against a tough, savvy veteran.”

Meanwhile, Till has proven one of the most marketable fighters in the promotion, helped in no small part by his bold social media presence. But “The Gorilla” does seem to be in need of a positive result after struggling through a 1-3 stretch in recent times – albeit against top competition.

Brunson said it’s important when evaluating an opponent to not just look at wins and losses, but also performances in those contests.

[lawrence-related id=819806,867096]

“I watched a lot of Darren Till – you know, he’s very tricky,” Brunson said. “In this game, you’re going to win some, you’re going to lose some, but the game is to win way more than you lose – and I wouldn’t say all of his losses were straight, like, he got annihilated. A couple of his losses, he was winning the fight and got caught, you know? So like, those are the things that I take from a fight. I dissect it and look at it like that and then understand the skill set that he possesses and then plan it with that.”

Meme concerns aside, there are other meaningful implications in the contest for Brunson’s future. At 37, he’s not exactly old in the sport, but he also can’t be patient in any planned run to the title. With an impressive win here, Brunson believes he has a real case to be next in line for the upcoming fight between middleweight champ Israel Adesanya and former titleholder Robert Whittaker.

“I’m definitely looking at it as a potential No 1 contender fight,” Brunson said. “Just being with what I’ve done – you know, four fights in a row against these guys that were supposed to be contending for titles. If I didn’t give these guys the hiccups, then they would be talking about these guys fighting for titles.

“I mean, I remember they were talking about Ian Heinisch; he comes in and looks really good early, and they were saying, ‘Man, this guy, he’s trending to be the next title challenger.’ I shut him down, then (Edmen) Shahbazyan came around, and everybody was talking about the youngest champion, and I sat him down. Then (Kevin) Holland came, five in a row. He beats me, his trash talk was already directed towards ‘Izzy,’ so like that was looking like a fight that was 100 percent going to be made, you know, so I set that down. So, like, I if I go out here and finish Till, definitely five in a row should be next after ‘Izzy’ and Whittaker.”

Nothing, of course, is guaranteed in the UFC. Circumstances change frequently, and title shots aren’t always given solely through the merit of a winning streak. That said, an impressive performance would certainly help his case.

“I’m just going to do my thing, show my growth, and I’m going to take my time and let the fight develop,” Brunson said. “You know, I’m looking to get the finish, but at the same time, I’m not in a hurry.

“Till says he wants to finish it in the first round, so maybe he’ll be in a hurry. If you want to come fight like that, I’m OK with him bringing the fight, pushing the pace, so I’m good however the fight goes. I just want to go out there and get a finish and make no doubt that I should be next.”

[autotag]Zviad Lazishvili[/autotag] has finally received the UFC call.

Said Nurmagomedov has been forced out of UFC Fight Night 191 and Lazishvili (12-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will step in on short notice to face [autotag]Jack Shore[/autotag] (14-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) at the Sept. 4 event.

Also unbeaten in his pro MMA career, former Cage Warriors bantamweight champ Shore has notched three octagon wins, most recently edging out Hunter Azure at UFC on ABC 2 in April.

Alexander Gustafsson out of UFC Fight Night 191 bout with Paul Craig due to injury

Alexander Gustafsson will no longer fight Paul Craig at UFC Fight Night 191 in September.

[autotag]Alexander Gustafsson[/autotag]’s return to the UFC light heavyweight division will have to wait.

Gustafsson (18-7 MMA, 10-7 UFC), a three-time title challenger at 205 pounds, has been forced to pull out of his scheduled bout with [autotag]Paul Craig[/autotag] (15-4-1 MMA, 7-4-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 191 on Sept. 4.

MMA Junkie verified the withdrawal with a person close to the situation, who wished to remain anonymous because the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. The exact nature of Gustafsson’s injury is undisclosed.

Gustafsson hasn’t competed since July 2020, when he suffered a first-round submission loss to Fabricio Werdum in his heavyweight debut. The Swede has lost three straight fights overall and retired from the sport in June 2019 before returning to the cage to fight Werdum.

Craig is left in limbo on a five-fight unbeaten streak. His past two wins have been the most notable of his career – finishes of top prospect Jamahal Hill and former champ Mauricio Rua.

Tom Aspinall vs. Sergei Pavlovich added to UFC Fight Night 191 on Sept. 4

Heavyweight prospects Tom Aspinall and Sergey Pavlovich will square off later this summer.

Heavyweight prospects [autotag]Tom Aspinall[/autotag] and [autotag]Sergei Pavlovich[/autotag] will square off at the end of the summer.

Aspinall (10-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) is set to meet Pavlovich (14-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) on Sept. 4 at UFC Fight Night 191, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. UFC officials announced the booking Wednesday morning.

Unbeaten in the UFC, Liverpool’s Aspinall is off to a hot start. After scoring back-to-back first-round TKO wins over Jake Collier and Alan Baudot, the Team Kaobon fighter picked up his biggest win to date when he submitted former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski in the second round of their fight in February.

Pavlovich is riding some momentum of his own having won two consecutive bouts. He suffered his first-career loss when he was stopped by Alistair Overeem in his UFC debut in November 2018, but Pavlovich rebounded with back-to-back first round TKO wins over Marcelo Golm and Maurice Greene. Pavlovich was scheduled to face current interim heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane in August 2020 but was forced to withdraw due to injury. The 29-year-old hasn’t competed since October 2019.

With the addition, the UFC Fight Night 191 lineup includes:

  • Derek Brunson vs. Darren Till
