Every UFC event in history with three or more weigh-in misses

Check out which UFC events saw the most issues on the scale before fight night.

Making weight is part of the job of a mixed martial artist.

Throughout the sport’s history, many fighters have experienced weigh-in day blunders on the scale. Whether they attempted to cut too much, mismanaged their weight loss goal, or experienced a medical issue, there are a number of reasons that may cause fighters to step on the scale above their contracted weights.

Many events see all competitors make weight without issue, but a fighter or two coming in heavy isn’t uncommon. However, there are rare instances that see three or more tip the scale too heavy, causing dramatic moments the day before the fights. Four is the high mark, which has occurred on four occasions.

Scroll below to see which UFC events, in chronological order, saw three or more misses.

MMA rankings report: Did Patricio Freire, Rafael dos Anjos make big moves?

What happened at featherweight and lightweight after big performances in Bellator and the UFC?

The MMA rankings report is back with a look at moves after Bellator 252 and UFC Fight Night 182.

Bellator 252 featured the return of the featherweight tournament and champion Patricio Freire. UFC Fight Night 182 had a former lightweight champion atop the card.

Freire starched Pedro Carvalho in the Bellator 252 main event – and had some room to move up at featherweight. In the UFC, Rafael dos Anjos returned to lightweight after a stint at welterweight and was dominant against Paul Felder. So where does he fall now at 155 pounds after we move him from 170?

MMA Junkie’s John Morgan and “Gorgeous” George Garcia walk you through those divisions and more in the latest edition of the rankings report.

Video: Paul Felder cheerfully chats about Rafael dos Anjos fight while getting stitched up

In case you didn’t already appreciate Paul Felder enough, he gave an honest assessment of his Rafael Dos Anjos fight while getting stitched up.

Make no mistake about it: [autotag]Paul Felder[/autotag] had one of those nights Saturday that proved a fighter can win even when his opponent is the one who gets his hand raised.

Felder (17-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) met former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos on just five days’ notice in the main event of UFC Fight Night 182 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

RDA displayed the former version of himself that once made him the world’s top 155 pounder in earning a decision victory over Felder on scores of 47-48, 50-45, and 50-45.

But Felder put in a valiant effort in defeat, making the bout compelling enough to earn “Fight of the Night” honors. Then he went out and put in one of the most fiery MMA interviews you’ll ever see with Michael Bisping during the ESPN+ post-fight show.

That’s already the type of thing that will raise your stock with your fans. Then, later in the night, footage of Felder being stitched up appeared on Instagram. Nearly 37 minutes, in fact.

Some of this footage is not for the squeamish. But if you don’t mind the sight of a medical procedure, Felder is in a remarkably chipper mood given what he’s going through, and offers the same honest insight into his own performance that he gives others when he’s working as a UFC color commentator.

“You forget about the money when you’re in there,” Felder says at one point. “You’re not thinking about the money when he’s kicking me in my ribs … and the coaches are yelling at you, ‘This is your cage,’ and you’re thinking, ‘Is it, though? He’s hitting me really hard.'”

UFC Fight Night 182 bonuses: Rafael dos Anjos-Paul Felder takes ‘Fight of the Night’

A closer look at the four fighters to go home with an extra $50,000 after UFC Fight Night 182 in Las Vegas.

Another UFC event is in the books, and as is the custom, four fighters end the evening with an extra $50,000.

UFC Fight Night 182 went down Saturday night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and had several memorable performances. [autotag]Rafael dos Anjos [/autotag]and [autotag]Paul Felder[/autotag] fought a lightweight main event that was far more compelling than two 50-45 scores in favor of the former would seem to indicate, and the duo earned “Fight of the Night” honors. [autotag]Khaos Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Sean Strickland[/autotag], meanwhile, both had impressive finishes, and they went home with “Performance of the Night” honors.

Here’s a closer look at the UFC Fight Night 182 bonus winners:

Photo: The inexplicable scorecard with a 48-47 Paul Felder win over Rafael dos Anjos

There’s little reason to deny Paul Felder gave a gritty performance in the UFC Fight Night 182 main event – but a win from one judge?

[vertical-gallery id=566218]

There’s little reason to deny [autotag]Paul Felder[/autotag] gave a gritty performance in the UFC Fight Night 182 main event.

After all, Felder (17-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) took the headliner against former lightweight champion [autotag]Rafael dos Anjos[/autotag] (30-13 MMA, 19-11 UFC) on just five days’ notice – with plenty of weight to cut. He saved the card.

In the fight, purely from a statistical standpoint, Felder was in the thing. He landed more significant strikes than dos Anjos and was right in the hunt for total strikes. But dos Anjos’ six takedowns helped lead to a lot of ground control time.

By the time five rounds were over, the presumption was dos Anjos had mostly cruised to 50-45 scorecards.

He got two of them.

The third? Judge Chris Lee gave the fight to Felder, 48-47. On his card, Felder won the middle three rounds.

At best, most observers seemed to think maybe Felder would get the fourth round. But you’d be hard-pressed to find many who were giving him Rounds 2 and 3, too. In fact, of the MMA analysts tracked by MMADecisions.com, 14 of 20 had dos Anjos at 50-45, and the other six had him 49-46.

A win is a win is a win as far as dos Anjos is concerned in his return to lightweight. But he probably held his breath a little when Felder’s 48-47 winning card was read.

Paul Felder reinvigorated by UFC Fight Night 182 loss to Rafael dos Anjos: ‘I’m not going anywhere’

The fire still burns within Paul Felder after he went five grueling rounds with Rafael dos Anjos on five days’ notice.

[autotag]Paul Felder[/autotag] isn’t going to retire following his loss to Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night 182.

Stepping up as a main event replacement on just five days’ notice, Felder (17-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) lost a split decision to former champ dos Anjos (31-13 MMA, 19-11 UFC) on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. He fought valiantly over the course of five rounds, but he just didn’t have enough to overcome his foe.

Felder had been toying with the idea of retirement since another split decision loss to Dan Hooker this past February. Since then, Felder’s UFC analyst and commentary work has taken a prominent role in his life, and he’s admitted it might be a full-time transition sooner than later. The fight with dos Anjos has seemingly changed his mind, though.

“I can tell you guys with certainty: I’m not going anywhere right now,” Felder told Michael Bisping in his UFC Fight Night 182 post-fight interview. “I lost my passion for this sport pretty bad. I can tell you I’m not done. I might lose my ranking a little bit, but what I’ve learned in this sport is none of that matters. What matters is going out there, showing up, showing who you are inside and what determination you have.”

[lawrence-related id=566676,566622,566592]

Felder’s mentality post-fight seemingly had much to do with the circumstances coming in. He made no secret that MMA training has been on the back burner, but he was able to fill the role in the UFC Fight Night 182 main event because he’s been doing cardio training for a triathlon.

What Felder kept secret, though, is to what extent he hadn’t been putting himself through MMA preparation. He said it was essentially nonexistent for most of 2020, so the fact he went through a 25-minute fight following an intense short-notice weight cut was a big personal proving point.

“I got a little tired there in the fifth, but I really think the problem is I was in striking shape and in really good cardio shape for the triathlon, but I hadn’t grappled,” Felder said. “I’ll be honest. Now I can be completely up front with you guys: I have not stepped foot in an MMA gym in almost four months. So (my performance) was completely based on pure endurance training and some pad work. Coming here and cutting over 22 pounds in four days, Thursday night was probably one of the darkest nights of my life cutting that weight, but I said I was going to be the first one on that scale, (and) I was the first one on that scale. I said I was going to give hell to a former world champion and give five rounds if I had to, and we just gave a five-round battle.”

Felder said he doesn’t know exactly what will be next for him. His status at 155 pounds will diminish in some respect, but ultimately he came out with a competitive loss, a $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonus and a newfound motivation to compete.

“This is exactly what I wanted,” Felder said. “This sport breaks you, man. It’s tough. I see it day in and day out when I’m calling these fights. I needed something to motivate me again. … To get a split decision (with) this guy, and I think we got ‘Fight of the Night,’ I just hope the UFC is proud of me and happy, and I hope everybody back home – I love you guys. This was for my dad, this was for my family. This was for you guys.”

UFC Fight Night 182 results: Rafael dos Anjos outworks a game Paul Felder to grueling decision

Paul Felder put in a spirited effort on just five days’ notice, but Rafael dos Anjos reminded everyone why he was once lightweight champ.

[autotag]Paul Felder[/autotag] put in a game effort in accepting the UFC Fight Night 182 main events against [autotag]Rafael dos Anjos[/autotag] on just five days’ notice.

But dos Anjos (30-13 MMA, 19-11 UFC) is the former UFC lightweight champion who made his return to 155 pounds after four years with mixed results at welterweight. And he used the opportunity to remind the world he’s still a major factor in one of MMA’s deepest divisions.

While Felder (17-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) had his moments Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, it was dos Anjos’ night to shine. He controlled the fight horn to horn and got a pair of 50-45 scores in his favor, although an inexplicable 48-47 Felder card made his victory a split decision.

“I was training for a southpaw wrestler, and Paul Felder is an orthodox fighter, but we needed to make this happen,” dos Anjos said. “This was my first fight back (at lightweight), and I have more adjustments to make.”

[lawrence-related id=566676,566622,566592]

Dos Anjos announced his intentions in the opening round. He found success with body kicks followed by crisp combos, and more often than not managed to escape before Felder could return fire.

In his lightweight title days, RDA made a habit of using pinpoint striking to set up his elite ground game, and this was no different. Dos Anjos earned a pair of takedowns in the round, and while he couldn’t do much with them, he did manage to land a huge left hook to the forehead in the closing seconds after Felder got back to his feet.

This was a rinse-and-repeat performance in the second round, although Felder, for his part, managed to keep dos Anjos honest by landing solid jabs and hooks. He never got any sustained offense untracked, though, as RDA would shut things down with takedown attempts whenever it appeared Felder might turn the tide, including a huge slam off a double late in Round 3.

After the third, Felder’s coach, Duke Roufus, told his fighter he needed a finish, and Felder upped the urgency. He landed his best strikes of the fight, but once again dos Anjos was able to answer the call, with the most noteworthy moment a big left hand that opened a nasty cut between Felder’s eyes.

A bleeding Felder faded in the fifth as dos Anjos, while never coming close to a submission, had his most effective grappling utilization of the fight, never allowing his opponent to break free whether on the mat or along the fence.

Dos Anjos, in his 30th UFC appearance, snapped a two-fight losing streak with his 15th career decision victory. Felder, who was originally scheduled to be a color commentator for the evening’s card before stepping in after Islam Makhachev dropped out, lost his second straight bout.

“We had a five-round battle, and I can tell you guys with certainty I am not going anywhere right now,” Felder said.

The lightweight bout was the UFC Fight Night 182 main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.
