UFC 272 video: Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal make weight for grudge match

Watch bitter rivals Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal make weight for the UFC 272 main event grudge match.

The emotionally charged grudge match between [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] and [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag] is official for UFC 272 after both men made weight.

At Friday’s official weigh-in, Covington (16-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) and Masvidal (35-15 MMA, 12-8 UFC) both hit the welterweight limit when they stepped on the scale, and now everything is set for the former teammates turned rivals to settle the score inside the octagon.

Covington stepped on the scale first roughly 34 minutes into the two-hour window and was 170.5 pounds, while “BMF” champion Masvidal came in almost exactly one hour later and registered at 170.5 pounds.

Watch the video or Covington and Masvidal making weight above.

UFC 272 takes place Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+.

The feud between Covington, No. 2 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie welterweight rankings, and No. 9-ranked Masvidal will come to a head in the headliner. The pair are former friends and training partners who have evolved into bitter rivals after a falling out between them.

It’s gotten extremely personal between “Chaos” and “Gamebred” in the lead-up to fight night, but after making weight, all that stands between them and sharing the octagon is a final faceoff at tonight’s ceremonial weigh-ins.

The UFC is back in front of a big arena crowd in Las Vegas this week with a huge grudge match at the top of the bill.

UFC 272 takes place Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] (16-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) takes on former teammate and training partner – as well as former friend and roommate – [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag] (35-15 MMA, 12-8 UFC) in one of the biggest grudge matches in UFC history. Covington is a heavy -350 favorite at Tipico; the comeback on Masvidal is +255. Our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Covington with a big 8-3 edge in the picks.

In the co-feature, former lightweight champion [autotag]Rafael dos Anjos[/autotag] (30-13 MMA, 19-11 UFC) takes on short-notice replacement [autotag]Renato Moicano[/autotag] (16-4-1 MMA, 8-4 UFC). Dos Anjos nearly is a 2-1 favorite and, like in the main event, has an 8-3 picks lead.

Also on the main card, featherweight [autotag]Edson Barboza[/autotag] (22-10 MMA, 16-10 UFC) will try to hand [autotag]Bryce Mitchell[/autotag] (14-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) his first loss. Mitchell is the favorite at the betting window at -165, but Barboza put up a total blowout in the picks at 9-2 from our staff members.

The biggest favorite on the main card is [autotag]Kevin Holland[/autotag] (21-7 MMA, 8-4 UFC), who is dropping from middleweight to welterweight for the first time to take on [autotag]Alex Oliveira[/autotag] (22-11-1 MMA, 11-9 UFC). Holland is a -370 favorite and is a near-unanimous choice from our pickers at 10-1.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Greg Hardy[/autotag] (7-4 MMA, 4-4 UFC) meets [autotag]Serghei Spivac[/autotag] (13-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) at heavyweight. Spivac is more than a 2-1 favorite, but he’s involved in our most contentious fight from a picks standpoint with a 7-4 lead.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Covington (65 percent), Dos Anjos (71 percent), Mitchell (58 percent), Holland (82 percent) and Spivac (64 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Edson Barboza not feeling any pressure against Bryce Mitchell: ‘I don’t need to prove nothing for nobody’

Having fought the who’s who throughout his career, UFC 272 is just another fight for Edson Barboza.

LAS VEGAS – Having fought a who’s who of opponents throughout his career, UFC 272 is just another fight for [autotag]Edson Barboza[/autotag].

Barboza (22-10 MMA, 16-10 UFC) meets unbeaten rising standout Bryce Mitchell (14-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) on Saturday’s main card, and while it’s an opportunity for him to halt a highly touted prospect, Barboza is just looking to put on a show like he always does.

“I don’t need to prove nothing for nobody anymore,” Barboza told reporters at Wednesday’s UFC 272 media day. “I was in the UFC for a long time. Bro, I fought against everybody or whoever the UFC gave me – I fought. I always make weight. I always do everything right, and I don’t need to prove nothing. It’s one more fight. I want to get my ‘W.’ I want to give my best like always, and that’s it.”

[lawrence-related id=2527524,2527528]

Barboza recalls being an unbeaten fighter on the rise himself when he scored one of the greatest knockouts in UFC history against Terry Etim a decade ago. But to still be on this level competing against top-caliber fighters has given the Brazilian a sense of pride.

“He’s a great fighter. He’s undefeated,” Barboza said of Mitchell. “He’s young, hungry. It’s motivating me a lot because like I said, I was in the UFC for a long, long time and still have an opportunity to fight against the best guys in the world – and that’s making me very, very happy.”

Colby Covington says he’s not getting PPV points for UFC 272 main event vs. Jorge Masvidal

Despite the magnitude of the fight, Colby Covington reveals he’s not getting PPV points for his main event bout vs. Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] is blowing up the promotion for arguably the biggest fight of his MMA career, yet, it looks like he won’t be getting any pay-per-view points for his main event bout.

The former UFC welterweight title challenger takes on Jorge Masvidal in the headlining act of Saturday’s UFC 272. The event goes down at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Covington (16-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) and Masvidal (35-15 MMA, 12-8 UFC) were former friends and teammates, but after a falling out due to an alleged unfulfilled payment from Covington’s part to Masvidal’s coach, the two turned bitter enemies. Their feud has become one of the biggest rivalries in combat sports today.

A big fight headlining a UFC pay-per-view event typically means a big payday, but Covington revealed he won’t be getting part of the cut on the pay-per-view sales.

“I forgoed the pay-per-view,” Covington told reporters at Wednesday’s media day. “I don’t care about the pay-per-view for this fight. This is a personal fight. I want to come and put on a show for the UFC and show that I’m deserving of being a lifetime UFC fighter.”

The grand majority of UFC pay-per-views are headlined by championship fights. Very few fights in the past have headlined a pay-per-view event without a title on the line. These rare exceptions include very limited fighters such as MMA stars Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz. Covington vs. Masvidal now joins that selected group that’s headlined a UFC pay-per-view while being a non-title bout.

[lawrence-related id=2527367,2526851]

Coming off a title fight loss to champion Kamaru Usman, Covington says he took a pay cut for this bout against Masvidal. “Chaos” is OK with the reduction in pay and not getting pay-per-view points due to the bad blood with Masvidal and his desire to step in the octagon with him.

“This is just a personal rivalry, this isn’t about the money,” Covington explained. “I didn’t come here to fight for money. I took a pay cut, I didn’t care about the money for this fight. This is about settling a blood rivalry.

“This has been a long time coming. This guy is holding it off as long as he could until he had no chance or no other opportunities. This is the biggest opportunity he could get to pay his alimony and to pay his child support, so of course, he had to come take his losing paycheck.
