UFC 270 results: Francis Ngannou tops Ciryl Gane after grapple-heavy affair goes the distance

Advertised as a fight between two of the sport’s heaviest hitters, the UFC 270 main event turned out to be quite the grappling affair.

Advertised as a fight between two of the sport’s heaviest hitters, [autotag]Francis Ngannou[/autotag] and [autotag]Ciryl Gane[/autotag] turned out to be quite the grappling affair.

After five rounds of technical striking, double-leg takedowns, and jiu-jitsu, Ngannou (17-3 MMA, 12-2 UFC) defeated his former teammate Gane (10-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46).

The heavyweight title unification bout was the UFC 270 pay-per-view main event at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

The build-up to Saturday’s main event centered around the past training relationship between Ngannou and Gane as the two shared similar MMA upbringings. Fernand Lopez served as mentor, coach, and manager of Ngannou throughout the regional scene and into the UFC. At UFC 270, however, Lopez was in the corner of Gane, who he’s served in a similar capacity in recent years.

In the opening seconds, Gane grabbed hold of Ngannou and pressured him against the cage. This would be a theme for Gane, tie up the champion and clinch. Ngannou, meanwhile, tried his signature explosive bursts. Despite the frantic nature of the attack he fended off, Gane remained cool and avoided most of the power shots. More clinching closed out Round 1 and Ngannou looked tired as he walked back to the stool.

In Round 2, Gane bounced circles around Ngannou as he landed technical strikes at all levels on his former teammate. Gane connected on a spinning wheel kick midway through the round, but Ngannou continued his slow plod forward. Ngannou’s movement and gas tank seemed to wane, as Gane continued his technical striking until the bell.

Things took a turn in Round 3, when Ngannou caught a Gane kick and thunderously power-slammed his opponent to the mat. Ngannou showed some glimpses of jiu-jitsu prowess with submission attempts and position changes, but Gane returned to the feet. Ngannou also landed a nice judo throw. Late in Round 3, Ngannou shot for a double-leg and dumped Gane to the canvas before the bell.

Round 4 contained more wrestling from Ngannou, who took Gane down two more times. While he wasn’t able to do much with his takedowns, Ngannou controlled a large majority of the round, until the horn.

Quite possibly tied at 2-2 as it entered Round 5, more grappling exchanges transpired. After Gane secured a takedown, Ngannou swept him and ended up on top. Gane attempted kneebars and heel hooks from the bottom as the two behemoths engaged in a 50-50 leg lock battle. Unable to secure a submission, Ngannou ended out the fight on top position.

Ngannou’s victory marks his first title defense since he defeated multi-time champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 260 in March 2021. It extends his winning streak to six, which also includes stoppage victories over former UFC heavyweight champions Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez.

The fight signified the final fight on Ngannou’s contract. With his successful title defense, the promotion can utilize a champion’s clause that will extend Ngannou under the UFC banner. Regardless, Ngannou’s contract terminates in January 2023, so he could enter free agency if he waited 12 more months.

The heavyweight champion and his boss, UFC president Dana White, did not see eye-to-eye in recent negotiations with comments spilling over into the public.

[lawrence-related id=2032077,2031997]

During the post-fight interview, Ngannou revealed he dealt with multiple knee issues during his camp, including a torn MCL and ACL troubles, which explained why he wore two kneepads for the fight.

As for Gane, the loss is his first as a professional. His pro MMA journey began in August 2018, approximately three-and-a-half years ago. During his short time in MMA, Gane shot up the ranks with victories over the likes of Derrick Lewis, Alexander Volkov, and others.

UFC 270 results: Deiveson Figueiredo regains flyweight title, bests Brandon Moreno in decision win

Deiveson Figueiredo regains the UFC flyweight title, defeating Brandon Moreno in a unanimous decision at UFC 270.

[autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] is champion once again.

“Deus Da Guerra” regained the UFC flyweight title, defeating [autotag]Brandon Moreno[/autotag] in a hard-fought, close decision at Saturday’s UFC 270 co-main event at Honda Center. Figueiredo (21-2-1 MMA, 9-3-1 UFC) won a unanimous decision, defeating Moreno (19-5-2 MMA, 7-2-2 UFC) 48-47 across all three judges’ scorecards.

This was the third time Moreno and Figueiredo met in the octagon. Their series of fights was the first trilogy in the UFC to go down consecutively. The two first met at UFC 256 in late 2019, which ended in a majority draw, and then a second time at UFC 263 in 2020, which ended in a third-round submission for Moreno.

It was a close and competitive bout.

In the first two rounds, Moreno and Figueiredo went back-and-forth. Moreno was mainly pressing Figueiredo, while the Brazilian seemed content to lean back and counter.

Figueiredo was landing strong leg kicks that were buckling Moreno. However, Moreno was mixing it up and connecting often to the body and head. The two connected hard shots, but Moreno seemed to stun the Brazilian multiple times.

The third round was the clearest round of the fight.

Figueiredo took down Moreno against the cage, but Moreno quickly got back up. In one of the exchanges, Figueiredo clipped and stunned Moreno with a left hand. Moreno lost balance and was connected again by Figueiredo. Moreno did a good job at fighting back and getting back in the contest, but towards the ned, Figueiredo dropped Moreno with a right hand with seconds remaining. Once on the ground, Figueiredo tried to lock up a guillotine but ran out of time.

The fourth and fifth were very competitive. Both fighters had their moments and connected often throughout the fight. Figueiredo was doing clear damage with the leg kicks, but Moreno kept firing back with combinations. It seemed that Figueiredo packed the most power and did the most damage from the exchanges. The two closed the fight in a wild brawl in the final seconds until the bell rang.

[lawrence-related id=2032077,1987969]

Figueiredo is back on top of the UFC flyweight division.

This is the first time the Brazilian gets a winning result against Moreno, as he was previously submitted to lose his title, and in their first meeting, the two had fought to a majority draw. Before the trilogy with Moreno, Figueiredo was on a five-fight winning streak that saw him win the vacant UFC flyweight title and complete a defense against Alex Perez.

Meanwhile, Moreno’s reign as champion came to an end with the result. He was also handed his first defeat since May 2018. Moreno entered the title fight unbeaten in his past seven bouts, which marked his second stint in the UFC.

UFC 270 results: Michel Pereira’s explosive striking leads to decision win over Andre Fialho

Michel Pereira flipped, flew, and struck his way to another win at UFC 270.

[autotag]Michel Pereira[/autotag] isn’t just flash. He’s substance, because the wins keep rolling in.

At UFC 270, Pereira (27-11 MMA, 5-2 UFC) defeated promotional newcomer [autotag]Andre Fialho[/autotag] (14-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

From the opening bell, Pereira utilized a snapping front kick to the midsection of Fialho, who either was not bothered by them or displayed a great poker face. Fialho tried to press forward, but the body shots and explosive outbursts from Pereira kept him at bay. Fialho succeeded late in Round 1 when he busted Pereira’s nose open and added additional damage when the fight hit the canvas.

Round 2 was Pereira’s strongest. His boxing appeared to stun Fialho, who retreated and was met with an explosive attack. Pereira mixed in some flying and standing knees, but Fialho survived.

In Round 3, Pereira looked a step ahead yet again. His energy levels were maintained despite his output level and the amount of power packed behind each strike. The front kick to the body resurfaced as the final round progressed and became just as heavy as a weapon as ever. The two fighters swung heavily at the final bell and received a loud cheer from the crowd.

Pereira continues his winning ways and extends his streak to four, a stretch dating back to 2020. Outside of a unanimous decision defeat to Tristan Connelly and a disqualification against Diego Sanchez, the flashy and explosive Pereira has won all of his other UFC bouts.

Despite the loss, Fialho is finally on the UFC roster after eight years of competition as a professional that included stops in Bellator, PFL, LFA, and XMMA. The defeat snaps four-fight winning and finishing streaks, which included wins over UFC alums James Vick and Stefan Sekulic.

UFC 270 results: 22-year-old Michael Morales blasts Trevin Giles with barrage, gets TKO stoppage

Moving to 13-0, Michael Morales picked up his first UFC win in style Saturday in Anaheim, Calif.

[autotag]Michael Morales[/autotag] is only 22 years old and he’s already knocking out established veterans inside the UFC cage.

In the UFC 270 main card opener Saturday, Morales (13-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) made his promotional debut against former RFA champion [autotag]Trevin Giles[/autotag] (14-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) and won via TKO at 4:06 of Round 1.

Morales, who earned a UFC deal on an episode of Dana White’s Contender Series in 2021, was the first to absorb a knockdown strike – but he wasn’t the last. After he regained himself, Morales unleashed havoc on Giles, who struggled to stay upright but eventually found his way.

Giles did not stay upright for long however, as another brutal Morales combination sent him back down to the canvas. As Giles grabbed hold of Morales’ leg, he received dozens of punches to his head. Referee Mike Beltran saw enough, and much to the dismay of Giles, waved off the fight.

With the win, Morales has finished 11 of his 13 professional fights. As for Giles, the defeat extends his losing skid to two, which also includes a TKO loss to Dricus Du Plessis in his most recent outing.
