Which Miami Dolphins 2021 UDFA has best chance to make the team?

Which Miami Dolphins 2021 UDFA has best chance to make the team?

The Miami Dolphins will welcome their rookie class of 2021 to the team facilities this weekend for rookie minicamp each player’s first opportunity to experience life as a Miami Dolphin. But for some of these players, the experience will be short-lived — as the experience isn’t just open to Miami’s seven player draft class but it is also inclusive to Miami’s undrafted free agent crop this year. Miami currently has just a handful of undrafted free agents confirmed to be added:

  • TE Jibri Blount, North Carolina Central
  • TE/FB Carl Tucker, Alabama Crimson Tide
  • IOL Robert Jones, Middle Tennessee State
  • IDL Jerome Johnson, Indiana
  • CB Jaytlin Askew, Georgia Tech

Of this group, Miami will see long odds of any making the active roster at the end of training camp. As Miami’s roster has continued to improve, one obvious side effect is that there are less spots for unheralded draft prospects to command attention and make the final team. Miami’s rebuilt roster in 2019 had several prominent UDFAs, including WR Preston Williams and CB Nik Needham.

As a testament to the impact of Miami’s rebuilding strategy, both Williams and Needham, are still on the team but facing marginalized roles after Miami added multiple receivers and defensive backs this offseason.

But if one of these five UDFAs were to survive cuts, which would it be?

The smart money probably goes on Robert Jones. He’s a stylistic fit for Miami up front with plenty of size and some noted power. Playing him inside will protect him from some of his biggest issues in college, too. Here’s what The Draft Network’s 2021 NFL Draft report on Jones had to say:

“Middle Tennessee State offensive lineman Robert Jones projects as an offensive guard at the NFL level despite the time he’s spent at offensive tackle at the collegiate level. Jones is a mauler who offers heavy hands and a thick frame—exactly the kind of build and profile you routinely see make ends meet on the interior. Jones does not have a great deal of functional athleticism, but his pass sets are sufficient and he offers plenty of power in his hands and mobility in the run game. Prior to his time at MTSU, Jones was one of the top JUCO tackles in the country at Highland Community College, where he played left guard. That exposure to the interior will help fortify a projection to the pro game, where his athleticism won’t allow him to thrive on the perimeter and in isolation. Teams looking for a low-cost investment inside for a potential power starter can look for Jones ideally on Day 3 of the 2021 NFL Draft.” — The Draft Network

Jones will compete with the likes of Michael Deiter, Adam Pankey, Jesse Davis and Cameron Tom for a depth spot on the roster.  Still a long shot? Absolutely. But better odds than just about any other name on Miami’s UDFA ledger.

5 UDFAs most likely to make Chiefs’ 53-man roster

These five players have the best shot of making the 53-man roster for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs have always given undrafted free agents an opportunity to come in and have a chance to make the 53-man roster.

If you can play football at a high level, the coaching staff and front office won’t be overly concerned with draft status. Look no further than the Super Bowl LIV squad and you’ll find it littered with players who started their careers as undrafted free agents. Not just role players either, we’re talking big-time contributors like Damien Williams, Daniel Sorensen, and Charvarius Ward.

The Chiefs have a history of finding diamonds in the rough every year in undrafted free agency. The 2019 season was one of the first in recent memory where Kansas City didn’t have a newly-signed undrafted free agent make the 53-man roster. In the years prior they’ve had at least one newly-signed undrafted free agent make the team.

The 2020 roster is decorated and there are a lot of established players that will draw fierce competition from this UDFA class. This year they signed a total of 19 undrafted free agents to round out their 53-man roster. Whether it’s from outstanding talent or a weak position group, these X players have the best chance to make the Chiefs’ 53-man roster in 2020.

Florida P Tommy Townsend

Special teams coordinator Dave Toub maintains that there will be a “true competition” between Townsend and second-year punter Tyler Newsome for the Chiefs’ punting job. At the same time, he didn’t parse his words talking about Townsend and what the team thought of him coming out of Florida.

“The kid’s got a lot of talent,” Toub said of Townsend. “We really liked him coming out. I had him rated as the best punter coming out this year and he was available for us, and those guys got it done to get him. So that was a pretty good deal.”

On top of Townsend’s ability as a punter, he’s also an experienced holder, which is something the Chiefs also need with the departure of Dustin Colquitt. Another added bonus to his game is that he’s shown the ability to run fake punts successfully.

I’m under the impression that Toub will go with his top-rated punter in this draft class over Newsome, who couldn’t win a job during the 2019 season. It’d take an all-time poor performance from Townsend or another player they like becoming available for something else to happen here.

Which Broncos UDFA has the best chance to make the roster?

Which undrafted free agent has the best chance to make the Broncos’ 53-man roster?

From Rod Smith to Chris Harris to Shaq Barrett to Phillip Lindsay, the Denver Broncos have a strong history of signing undrafted free agent gems.

This year, the Broncos signed seven UDFAs: WR Zimari Manning, QB Riley Neal, WR Kendall Hinton, RB LeVante Bellamy, OT Hunter Watts, CB Essang Bassey and DB Douglas Coleman III.

Of those players, who has the best chance to make the 53-man roster?

Let’s start by discussing who has the hardest road to the active roster.

Neal is likely just a camp arm and it will be hard for him to even land on the practice squad. Manning and Hinton will be part of a crowded wide receiver room so they will face long odds to make the team.

Watts seems like an ideal candidate to serve on the practice squad as a rookie. Denver usually has several offensive linemen on the PS each year.

That leaves, Bassey, Coleman and Bellamy.

Bellamy could make the team if Royce Freeman is traded. If Freeman makes the team, though, the Broncos seem unlikely to carry four RBs.

Coleman will have a shot to make the roster as Denver’s fourth-string safety. He’ll be a player to watch for this summer.

Bassey, who was one of the top UDFAs available this year, appears to be the most likely UDFA to make the Broncos’ roster this season. Bassey received a large signing bonus and he plays cornerback, a position where Denver could use more depth.

If only one UDFA makes the Broncos’ roster, it’ll probably be Bassey.

Broncos’ UDFA contracts could give clues about who will make 53-man roster

Essang Bassey might be a favorite to make the Broncos’ 53-man roster.

When NFL teams make decisions about roster cuts, a player’s performance on the field is the biggest factor to consider.

That doesn’t mean other factors don’t have any influence on decisions, though. A player’s draft status and contract situation can also influence a team’s decision.

For the Broncos, the bonuses for undrafted free agents could give us a clue about which of those players Denver coveted the most. Sometimes teams get into bidding wars for UDFAs and a player’s large bonus certainly doesn’t guarantee a player will make the team, but it can help.

Running back LeVante Bellamy received a $25,000 signing bonus and $35,000 in guaranteed salary, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Could that be a sign that the Broncos plan to trade or cut Royce Freeman and have Bellamy serve as the third-string RB this season? Maybe.

Cornerback Essang Bassey received a $20,000 signing bonus, according to Klis. Even though he didn’t receive the largest bonus, Bassey might be the most likely UDFA to make Denver’s roster. The team needs more depth at cornerback and Bassey could be a sleeper to watch this summer.

Here are the remaining UDFA signing bonuses, according to Klis:

Player Bonus
WR Zimari Manning $12,500
WR Kendall Hilton $10,000 (plus $5,000 guaranteed salary)
QB Riley Neal $8.000
DB Douglas Coleman $5,000
OT Hunter Watts $3,000

The undrafted free agents who don’t make the 53-man roster will be strong candidates to make the Broncos’ practice squad.

Breaking down each of the Chiefs’ undrafted free agents

Get to know the newest undrafted free agents for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Breaking down each of the Chiefs’ undrafted free agentsThe Kansas City Chiefs added 18 undrafted free agents following the 2020 NFL Draft.

This team has always given the best players the opportunity to shine whether they’re top overall draft picks or undrafted free agents. Several players who contributed to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl-winning season started out their career as undrafted free agents. Guys like Damien Williams, Daniel Sorensen, Charvarius Ward and so on.

Here’s a closer look at the newest group of undrafted players who will have the chance to make an impact in Kansas City:

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Missouri OL Yasir Durant

Height: 6-6

Weight: 331

Career stats: 37 games played with 748 snaps at left tackle.

Info: Durant allowed just 29 pressures, 4 sacks in his career per PFF. For his size, Durant is very light on his feet. He does really well blocking in space and his feet are quick with the ability to mirror his opponents. Brett Veach envisions Durant as a player with the positional flexibility to play both tackle and guard. This is a player that I’d watch out for as a sleeper to earn the starting job at left guard.

Broncos waive 4 players to make room for UDFA signings

The Broncos waived four players on Monday.

After agreeing to terms with seven undrafted free agents, the Denver Broncos had to open up four spots on the 90-man offseason roster.

Denver waived safety Tyvis Powell, tight end Bug Howard and defensive linemen Deyon Sizer and Jay-Tee Tiuli, the team announced Monday.

Howard played in the AAF last spring and spent part of the 2019 season on the Broncos’ practice squad. Powell also spent time on the practice squad last season, as did Sizer and Tiuli.

Sizer played in one game last season, recording one tackle in a 23-3 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in December.

After the draft, Denver signed quarterback Riley Neal, running back Levante Bellamy, offensive tackle Hunter Watts, cornerback Essang Bassey, safety Douglas Coleman III and wide receivers Zimari Manning and Kendall Hinton. Bassey was one of the top UDFAs available.

The Broncos also selected 10 players in this year’s NFL Draft.

Denver’s staff will now turn its attention toward the team’s virtual offseason program, which began Monday. Players will participate in virtual meetings and workouts with the team’s coaching staff.

Check out these highlights of new Broncos CB Essang Bassey

Here are highlights of new Broncos defensive back Essang Bassey!

The Denver Broncos signed seven college free agents after the draft, including defensive back Essang Bassey. Here are highlights from Bassey’s senior season at Wake Forest:

Bassey (5-9, 191 pounds) was one of the top undrafted free agents available this year. During his final three seasons at Wake Forest, Bassey broke up 35 passes, the most of any defensive back in college football during that timeframe.

Bassey’s competition for a roster spot in Denver will include Duke Dawson, De’Vante Bausby, Davontae Harris, Shakial Taylor and Isaac Yiadom. A.J. Bouye and Bryce Callahan (assuming he’s healthy) will probably be locks to make the roster, as will be third-round pick Michael Ojemudia.

If he doesn’t make the 53-man roster, Bassey would be a strong candidate for the practice squad. Given that some pre-draft predictions had him being a fifth-round pick, Bassey seems to have a good chance of making the team.

Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay shares inspiring tweet for undrafted free agents

Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay offered a word of encouragement on Twitter for players who weren’t picked in the NFL Draft.

The 2020 NFL Draft has wrapped up and the Denver Broncos have added 10 (drafted) rookies to their roster. So what happens now to the players that weren’t drafted?

Some of them will sign with teams as undrafted free agents. Denver has signed five undrafted free agents so far.

Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay shared an inspiring message for UDFAs on his Twitter page on Thursday evening.

“Remember, come preseason, it doesn’t matter if your name was called in the draft or not,” Lindsay tweeted. “Everyone still has to prove that they belong in the NFL. Its free game once you touch that field, and the best players stay. #Undrafted”

Lindsay, of course, signed with Denver as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft. He went on to become the first undrafted offensive rookie in NFL history to make the Pro Bowl after rushing for 1,037 yards and nine touchdowns in his first season.

Lindsay rushed for 1,000 yards again last season and he will remain a key part of the offense this year, sharing touches with Melvin Gordon.

Report: Broncos signing undrafted free agent WR Zimari Manning

The Broncos are signing undrafted free agent wide receiver Zimari Manning.

Even after drafting three wide receivers this week, the Denver Broncos still aren’t done adding wide receivers to the roster.

The Broncos are signing undrafted free agent wide receiver Zimari Manning, according to The Houston Chronicle‘s Aaron Wilson. Manning received a $12,500 signing bonus, according to Wilson.

Manning (6-2, 200 pounds) caught 68 passes for 1,462 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior at Tarleton State University. He had a monster game against UT Permian Basin last September, catching seven passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns.

Manning ended his two-year career at Tarleton State with 112 receptions for 2,409 yards and 34 touchdowns in 24 games.

After drafting 10 players, Denver only has room to sign three undrafted free agents. The team has already signed two players — Manning and former Vanderbilt quarterback Riley Neal. Unless they make some roster cuts, the Broncos will only have room for one more undrafted free agent signing.

We are tracking all of Denver’s undrafted free agent signings here.
