Detroit Lions UDFA watch: Assessing the undrafted rookies entering the 1st preseason game

One of the more interesting facets of the first preseason game is seeing the rookies in action against another team for the first time. For the undrafted rookies in Detroit, most fans have no real exposure to what they’re doing in camp or what skills they might offer.

Here’s a primer on the Lions undrafted rookie class and how they’re faring entering Friday night’s preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

Note that the list here has been pared down with the recent retirements of WR Corey Sutton and OL Zein Obeid.

Now that the rookie minicamp is complete, it’s a little easier to provide a more informed perspective on the Detroit Lions draft class of 2021. In a video recording and podcast with Ourlads scouting network, I was able to offer some deeper insight into the first draft class from new GM Brad Holmes.

We talked about how the rookie class impacts the Lions depth chart and what roles the versatile players like second-rounder Levi Onwuzurike and fourth-round wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown will play for head coach Dan Campbell.

We also broke down the chances for several of the undrafted free agents, including the wide receivers who have a chance to earn not just roster spots but actual playing time on the 53-man roster.

Lions release 4 players to make room for UDFAs

The Detroit Lions announced they have released four players in order to create room for their 2020 unrestricted free agents.

The Detroit Lions announced they have released four players in order to create room for their 2020 unrestricted free agents: running back Tra Carson, guard Casey Tucker, punter Matt Wile, and long snapper James Fischer.

After drafting two running backs in the 2020 NFL Draft — D’Andre Swift in the second round and Jason Huntley in the fifth — Carson was sitting seventh on the Lions depth chart and was squeezed out of the 90-man roster.

The same fate fell true for Tucker, who saw his place on the depth chart compromised by the addition of two draft picks at his position — Jonah Jackson in the third round and Logan Stenberg in the fourth.

After signing UDFAs Aaron Siposs (punter) and Steve Wirtel (long snapper) the Lions had three punters and three long snappers on the roster, and with roster space at a premium, Wile and Fischer were casualties of a numbers game.

The Lions roster is now at 90-players as the veterans begin their virtual offseason programs today.
