Iowa women’s basketball slated to take part in Phil Knight Legacy tournament in November

Iowa appears like it’s on an early collision course with Paige Bueckers and Connecticut in the Phil Knight Legacy tournament in November.

We might have a game of the year contender in the first week of the 2022-23 women’s college basketball season.

Iowa women’s basketball announced on Monday that they would be participating in the Phil Knight Legacy College Basketball Tournament on Nov. 25. The Hawkeyes will open up their 2022-23 campaign against Pac-12 foe Oregon State. Oregon State finished with a respectable 17-14 record last season.

Not to completely gloss over Oregon State and the opening contest, but the bracket posted for the tournament should widen the eyes of any fan of college women’s hoops. On the other side of the bracket Connecticut faces Duke. The idea of a potential Connecticut-Iowa matchup should have every hoops fan salivating.

Both Uconn and Iowa will surely enter the upcoming season in the top 10. While Iowa unfortunately fell in the second round of last year’s NCAA tournament, they certainly have the talent to go way further. Uconn did exactly what they always do, making the Final Four for the 13th consecutive year in a row. Both teams feature arguably the best hooper in the nation.

Paige Bueckers was probably Connecticut’s most hyped-up recruit since superstar Breanna Stewart. She proved that hype was warranted right away, becoming a leader early in her freshman year. Her offensive output declined a bit last year due to an injury, but she’s still clearly one of the nation’s elite.

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark was the nation’s leader in points per game and assists per game. It goes further than just the stat line, though. Clark’s long range shooting has made her one of the biggest stars in all of women’s basketball.

This right here is the matchup every fan, every person involved with women’s basketball should be hoping for. Clark and Bueckers are leading the way for the next generation of women’s basketball stars alongside South Carolina’s Aliyah Boston. They are leading a movement that is getting more and more people interested in women’s hoops.

The last time these two matched up against each other was in the Sweet 16 of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Uconn got the better of Iowa, winning 92-72, but both looked like potential superstars. Now after both have reached that elite status, a super matchup between two of the biggest stars in the sport would be monumental.

Notre Dame, UConn will renew rivalry for Jimmy V Classic

Get your tickets for this one, or at least stay home for it.

One of the biggest rivalries in women’s basketball is returning for 2022-23. Notre Dame has been one of the few programs to challenge UConn’s supremacy in the sport, so you know any game involving these teams will be good. [autotag]Muffet McGraw[/autotag] might be gone from the rivalry, but the feelings between these programs surely remain. That’s why their Dec. 4 clash at Purcell Pavilion as part of the Jimmy V Classic should be filled with great anticipation.

These programs met last season with the Huskies taking a 73-54 victory in Storrs. Of course, that game couldn’t compare to the numerous Final Four games that have paired them over the past decade-plus. For Irish fans, none of those contests stand more than the first of back-to-back late [autotag]Arike Ogunbowale[/autotag] heroics during the 2018 semifinals. Not only did it set her up for her championship-winning buzzer beater against Mississippi State two nights later, but it ruined the Huskies’ perfect season.

If you watch only one women’s basketball game this season, make this one it.

College Baseball fans should be treated to more excitement this weekend as 16 teams fight for a spot in Omaha during the Super Regionals.

College Baseball fans were treated to a wild weekend of baseball last weekend during the opening round of the NCAA Baseball playoffs.

The regionals were filled with Auburn dominating their entire regional, high-scoring, marathon games in Stillwater and Stanford, and LSU erasing huge deficits in the Hattiesburg Regional before ultimately ending their season with a loss to host Southern Miss.

This weekend’s Super Regionals appear to bring just as much excitement. Here’s a look at who is playing, where they are playing, and how to watch them on this one final weekend before the College World Series begins.

Game 3’s are all if necessary

A college umpire made the worst interference call on Maryland runner who rammed into a UConn first baseman

What an awful call.

It’s been a rough NCAA Baseball Tournament for umpires (did you see the ump that pushed an ECU player to stop him from admiring his homer?).

And after you see this call from the Maryland and UConn game, you’ll agree.

Here’s the situation: Maryland was down 10-8 to UConn in an elimination game, when Chris Alleyne of the Terps hit a slow grounder toward first. The pitcher grabbed it and tossed to Ben Huber at first base.

Alleyne rammed into Huber, who was standing on the base … and then an umpire called him out for interference, wiping a run off the board in a crucial moment.

But you’ve got to see the play to know why this was an awful call:

The independents are all in interesting situations.

Former Big 12er BYU won’t be on its own for much longer, Liberty will once again be a thorn in the sides of several Power Five teams, Army should rip through its schedule, and New Mexico State, Notre Dame, UConn, and UMass are all starting the 2022 season with new head coaches.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

With Cowboys eyeing the role, Travis Jones checks several boxes for 1T in the draft

The Cowboys are showing real interest in the one-tech role this draft, but will they pull the trigger before Day 3? If so, Jones may stand up to scrutiny. Tyler Browning (@DiabeticTyler) dives into the tape.

Cowboys fans have long been clamoring for a big one tech, almost as long or if not longer than they have wanted a free safety who can roam the field. The primary option for the entire draft is Georgia’s Jordan Davis, one of the 30 visitors, but what if he isn’t available?

Uconn’s big body answer is defensive tackle Travis Jones. The junior lineman from New Haven is seen as the next-best option on many a draft board, and there’s plenty of reasons why. His time as a Huskie wasn’t filled with much winning, the university going 4-33 during his three years. That time came with two coaches, as Randy Edsall retired in the middle of 2021. Jones’ play remained stellar, though with 133 tackles, and his after-college circuit included an impressive week at the Senior Bowl and quality testing numbers.
