Watch Texas A&M HC Buzz Williams preview the season opener against UCF

Here’s everything head coach Buzz Williams had to say ahead of Texas A&M basketball’s season opener vs. UCF

The Texas A&M basketball season will open on the road in Orlando when the Aggies take on UCF on Monday, Nov. 4, in Addition Financial Arena.

A&M has another tough non-conference schedule highlighted by No. 14 Purdue and No. 15 Creighton, but first, Buzz’s experienced team has a talented UCF team they can’t look over, especially since it’s an away game. This type of schedule will pay dividends when it comes to prepping them for SEC play and the selection committee at the end of the season.

Williams took a note from Texas A&M Football head coach Mike Elko this offseason. He utilized the transfer portal, adding commitments from former Nebraska shooting guard CJ Welcher, former SMU guard Zhuric Phelps, and former Minnesota center Pharrel Payne.

However, nothing trumps the return of star guard Wade Taylor IV, who will join senior guard Manny Obaseki in the starting backcourt, which looks like one of the better guard combinations in the country.

Ahead of Monday’s season opener vs. UCF, Buzz Williams spoke to the media, previewing the roster and matchup before tipoff.

Below, you can watch the entire press conference.

Texas basketball blows 12-point lead vs. UCF in new season low

Texas basketball collapses against UCF and blows a 12-point halftime lead.

Texas basketball is a sinking ship. The season reached a new low in an surprising collapse against the UCF Golden Knights.

The Longhorns led the Knights by a score of 44-32 at halftime. It was an impressive half, but the Longhorns stopped impressing after that. UCF stormed back outscoring the Longhorns in the second half, 45-27.

Texas guards Ithiel Horton and Max Abmas attempted a combined 21 three-point field goals. Needless to say, that wasn’t a winning formula, but the two guards weren’t getting much help from elsewhere.

The Longhorns bench scored a grand total of seven points on the game. For context, the Knights bench scored 34.

Some saw our criticism of the Longhorns’ lack of portal acquisitions as unfair. After watching a 1-3 start to Big 12 play, the team’s lack of depth has shown up in a huge way with not enough stepping up to help the primary scorers.

There are great players on this Texas team. There just aren’t enough of them, and certainly not as much as there could have been had there been more urgency in building a more complete team in the offseason.

Texas got outscored by 18 points in the second half against UCF at home. This isn’t the start we hoped for in head coach Rodney Terry’s first full season. Due to the lack of depth, there probably won’t be much of any improvement.

The Longhorns are on the verge of missing the NCAA Tournament barring dramatic improvement. We will see if Terry can make do with the roster he assembled.

Houston vs UCF Game Preview

Why UCF Will Win

Houston has hit a bit of a snag.

As amazing as it’s been all season long, it’s now on a two-game losing streak after having too many problems on the free throw line and with issues stopping both SMU and Memphis from three.

UCF is on the flip side with a two-game winning streak. The shooting has been better, the threes are falling, and the team has a puncher’s chance because it’s going to fire from the outside and keep on chucking.

UCF has been good for around nine threes per game, and it’s been able to hit double-digit shots from the outside in six of the last eight games.

However …

Why Houston Will Win

The Houston defense should be able to clamp down. When UCF isn’t making its shots from the outside there’s a big, big problem.

The Cougars beat UCF in late January 63-49 after holding UCF to just six made threes.

Yes, the Knights have the ability to bomb their way out of trouble, but there’s a big problem if those shots aren’t dropping. Like almost all teams, they’re much, much better at home when it comes to comfort with the outside shots, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Houston is one of the best teams in the country at defending the three. After losing two straight, it’s about to ramp up the intensity that much more to stop this slide in its tracks.

The D might not be able to hold UCF to 49 points again, but after getting hit hard from the outside in the last two games, look out. The defense is about to be amazing.

Houston vs UCF Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

Defense, defense, defense.

Houston suffocates teams with a. whole lot of pressure, takeaways, and a D that’s second in the nation in field goal percentage allowed. It held East Carolina to 36 points, it hasn’t allowed more than 70 points since an 83-82 loss to Alabama back on December 11th, and it’s good enough from three to shoot its way into a run to allow the D to take care of the rest.

UCF can score, and its defense isn’t bad, but it’s not consistent and it relies too much on hitting from the outside. However …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why UCF Will Win

If the Knights can get hot from the outside, they’re in this.

It’s not like Houston hasn’t bombed teams that were able to hit from the outside, but UCF should be good for about ten threes if everything is going right.

It’s good enough defensively to keep the Cougars from going off in transition, and it’s not bad at slowing down teams from three, but it’s all about whether or not the outside shots are falling.

UCF is 4-0 in its last eight games when making 11 or more from there, and 0-4 in those eight when it doesn’t. Everything else should function off of that, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Hofstra.

Your 2022-2023 Hofstra Pride nailed 12 three pointers in a whale of a 83-75 season-opening Houston overtime win. That was the only time anyone was able to make more than ten threes all year on the Cougar D.

Only Louisiana and Temple were able to come up with ten three pointers, and Houston won both of those games.

UCF will give it a try from the outside, but you only beat Houston by hitting everything. Wisconsin was 47% from the field in its win over the Cougars, and Alabama made 52% of its shots. Those were the two best shooting days by anyone this year against this defense.

UCF isn’t going to be able to do that.

Five takeaways from Auburn basketball’s win over UCF

Auburn earns a hard fought win over UCF. Here are the takeaways:

This was a much more physical, tough, and competitive game than the final score indicated.

No. 21 Auburn (6-1) defeated UCF (4-2) by a final score of 85-68 on a very chippy night in Auburn Arena.

These two teams clearly had some bad blood after the Tigers lost in Orlando to the Knights last season, a game where Auburn shot just 32.3% from the floor, 20.6% from three, and 36.4% from the free-throw line.

Tonight, it was Auburn’s turn to do the clamping. The Knights ended up shooting 35.6% from the floor and a poor 16.7% from three.

Here are five takeaways from the scrappy affair between Auburn and UCF.
