Former Big Ten defensive back Tyvis Powell to join Big Ten Network

What a great hire. Can’t wait to see what he brings to the Big Ten Network. #GoBucks

One of the great things about being in the Ohio State football program is the opportunities it presents after a player’s on-field days are over. There are already many media members across multiple networks that have a little scarlet and gray in their background. From Kirk Herbstreit as arguably the voice of college football at ESPN, to Joey Galloway, Cris Carter, Joshua Perry, Rober Smith, and many more — there aren’t too many programs out there that have such a media presence at all levels of the game.

Now you can add another one — former Ohio State defensive back, Tyvis Powell.

Powell played safety for Ohio State from 2013 to 2015 and was a key member of the 2014 team that won the national championship. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent following the 2016 NFL draft, then bounced around a bit before falling out of the league in 2020.

Since then though, we’ve heard and seen him on various media outlets, bringing his big personality and humor. And now, it looks like he’ll be joining the Big Ten Network as a part of the B1G Tailgate show that airs from campuses live on Saturday game days.

This is a home run hire by the Big Ten Network. If you’ve followed Powell at all, he is engaging, high-energy, and has one whale of a sense of humor. He’ll be fun to watch and count me in the camp that can’t wait to see what he brings to the show and network.

Former Ohio State football players in the CFL

The Canadian Football League (CFL) is about to kick off. Did you know these former Ohio State players are playing north of the border?

The Canadian Football League will begin training camp this week with the season kicking off on August 5. There are always a few notable former Buckeyes that continue their gridiron careers up north like Duron Carter, Jonathan Newsome, and Troy Smith from years past. And true to form, there are five memorable OSU names to keep track of for the 2021 season as well.

For those unfamiliar with the CFL, there are nine teams and the field is larger with only three downs. But another key component is that teams are required to maintain a certain number of native Canadians on the roster and on the field, which makes roster sports even more complex.

Below are the five former Buckeyes who are looking to make waves this season in the CFL. Please remember there was not a season in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Former Ohio State safety Tyvis Powell signs to play in Canadian Football League

Tyvis Powell inking a deal in Canada!

Former Ohio State safety Tyvis Powell will look to continue his professional football career north of the border. Powell has signed a contract with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League.

Powell played for the Buckeyes from 2013-2015 where he recorded 195 total tackles and eight interceptions. The most famous pick of his career came during his freshman season in the final seconds against Michigan. Powell slid in front of a Wolverine receiver to secure the victory for OSU.

The former safety was also named a captain during the Bucks 2015 national championship season. He was even named the defensive MVP in the win over Oregon in the College Football Playoff championship game.

Powell went undrafted in the 2016 NFL draft after leaving Ohio State early. He spent four seasons bouncing around the league and the last game the safety played in was in 2018 with the San Francisco 49ers. He appeared in seven games with the Niners, with six total tackles.

Colts hold tryout for 5 safeties after Malik Hooker injury

Colts keep an eye on the safety market.

The Indianapolis Colts held a tryout for five safeties on Tuesday after placing safety Malik Hooker (Achilles) on the injured reserve list, per the league’s transaction wire.

In Hooker’s absence, the Colts are likely to use Khari Willis and rookie third-round pick Julian Blackmon as the starting tandem. However, the Colts could limit Blackmon a bit as he’s coming off of surgery from a December ACL tear. This would allow George Odum and Tavon Wilson to see some defensive snaps as well.

Here is the list of defensive backs the Colts hosted for a tryout on Tuesday:

Two interesting names on this list are Obi Melifonwu and Tyvis Powell. Most of these safeties haven’t really made a name for themselves in the league, but these two could bring interest to the Colts.

Melifonwu is an uber-athletic safety who made his stock astronomically soar after he destroyed the NFL combine drills in 2017. He wound up being a second-round pick with the Raiders but injuries kept him off the field during his first two seasons. He’s played in just seven games in his career.

Powell is interesting simply because he has experience working with the Colts in some capacity. Though it came in 2017 with Chuck Pagano, he at least is a name we are familiar with.

The Colts elevated Ibraheim Campbell to the active roster on Tuesday so these workouts are likely just keeping updated with who’s available for potential practice squad additions.

Broncos waive 4 players to make room for UDFA signings

The Broncos waived four players on Monday.

After agreeing to terms with seven undrafted free agents, the Denver Broncos had to open up four spots on the 90-man offseason roster.

Denver waived safety Tyvis Powell, tight end Bug Howard and defensive linemen Deyon Sizer and Jay-Tee Tiuli, the team announced Monday.

Howard played in the AAF last spring and spent part of the 2019 season on the Broncos’ practice squad. Powell also spent time on the practice squad last season, as did Sizer and Tiuli.

Sizer played in one game last season, recording one tackle in a 23-3 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in December.

After the draft, Denver signed quarterback Riley Neal, running back Levante Bellamy, offensive tackle Hunter Watts, cornerback Essang Bassey, safety Douglas Coleman III and wide receivers Zimari Manning and Kendall Hinton. Bassey was one of the top UDFAs available.

The Broncos also selected 10 players in this year’s NFL Draft.

Denver’s staff will now turn its attention toward the team’s virtual offseason program, which began Monday. Players will participate in virtual meetings and workouts with the team’s coaching staff.

Broncos sign 2 players to practice squad

The Broncos have added outside linebacker Malik Carney and safety Tyvis Powell to their 10-man practice squad.

After placing quarterback Joe Flacco (neck) and linebacker Corey Nelson (biceps) on injured reserve, the Denver Broncos promoted quarterback Brett Rypien and linebacker Josh Watson from the 10-man practice squad to the 53-man roster last week.

To fill the two spots on the practice squad vacated by Rypien and Watson, the team has signed outside linebacker Malik Carney and safety Tyvis Powell, according to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala.

Carney (6-3, 235 pounds) is a rookie who totaled 176 tackles — including 32.5 tackles for losses — and 17 sacks during his four years at North Carolina. Before this year’s draft, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compared Carney to ex-Denver outside linebacker Shaq Barrett.

Powell (6-3, 210 pounds) is a third-year defensive back who has spent time with six different NFL teams, most recently with the Dallas Cowboys in August. He dressed for seven games with the San Francisco 49ers last season and totaled six tackles and forced one fumble.

Before the 2016 draft, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compared Powell to Kendrick Lewis, who had an eight-year career in the NFL.

The Broncos’ 10-man practice squad and 53-man roster are now both full.
