Texans RT Tytus Howard shares encouragement ahead of 2023 NFL draft

Houston Texans right tackle Tytus Howard tweeted positivity for the 2023 NFL draft class, drawing upon his own experience in 2019.

The Houston Texans reached for Tytus Howard.

That was the prevailing narrative when the Texans drafted the Alabama State tackle No. 23 overall in Round 1 of the 2019 NFL draft.

Houston was merely compensating because they missed out on Andre Dillard. That debate was quickly over by the end of their respective rookie years as Howard earned a spot on the Pro Football Writers of America’s all-rookie team.

Howard reflected on his underdog story Thursday evening and took to Twitter to give the 2023 class encouragement.

“Didn’t get an invite to the draft,” Howard wrote. “They told me I couldn’t get a camera crew until day 2. Still proving everyone who wrote me off wrong. You control your own destiny just put the work in. #NFLDraft2023”

Howard has started all 54 games active for the Texans since 2019.

Laremy Tunsil embraces mentor role with young Texans

Three-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil appreciates his role as mentor for the younger Houston Texans at the core of the team’s rebuild, writes @bigsargesportz

HOUSTON — There is just something about Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil that exudes leadership.

He isn’t the loudest voice in any room, which is why his exclamations of “we won, we won” were intriguing as the Texans stepped off the field at Nissan Stadium. Houston left the Tennessee Titans coal in their stocking on Christmas Eve as the Texans edged their AFC South rivals 19-14 to snap their nine-game losing streak.

Snapping the nine-game losing streak was enough to make a 6-foot-5, stoic colossus skip.

Just as Tunsil redirects edge rushers away from the quarterback, so too does the three-time Pro Bowler divert attention toward his teammates rather than bring any attention to himself.

Tunsil isn’t boisterous or animated; he lets his play do the talking for him, as it did during the 2022 season when he only allowed one sack while playing all offensive snaps for Houston. That type of play goes a long way and speaks volumes with his teammates, especially his position group.

In his press conference on Wednesday to discuss his new three-year, $75 million extension, making him the highest-paid offensive tackle in the NFL. Tunsil wanted everyone to know that the focus would be on him being able to help some of the younger guys on the team become successful by being that leader they needed on and off the field.

“I’m showing those guys that it’s possible,” Tunsil said about his role in mentoring players such as right tackle Tytus Howard and offensive guard Kenyon Green. “If you stay consistent, if you work hard, the sky is the limit. I’m thankful just to be in this position to mentor those guys and show those guys that the sky is the limit. Whatever you put your mind to, you can get it done.”

Houston finished the season with a 3-14 record, their third consecutive season of winning less than five games. With David Culley and Lovie Smith being one-and-done coaches, the Texans are heading into another rebuilding season looking to find the winning ways that had them AFC contenders in the previous years.

Hiring former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator and Houston Texans player DeMeco Ryans played a significant part in the decision of the former Miami Dolphins 2016 first-round selection.

“My biggest thing with staying with the Houston Texans was I believe this organization is going to turn it around quickly,” said Tunsil. “This organization is on a rise, especially getting a guy like DeMeco Ryans in this building. He’s a young, energy guy, younger coach, and he was actually a player here too. So, getting a guy like that coming into the building means a lot. We’re trying to get things turned around.”

Tunsil is well aware that he will be teammates with many rookies and free agents on prove-it deals. Yet, he is determined to be that building block to help them and his second-year players experience that winning feeling.

“As far as my role on this team, I view myself as the X-factor for this entire team and a mentor,” Tunsil expressed to the media on Wednesday. “For the young guys like Jalen Pitre, Dameon Pierce, and Kenyon Green, I view myself as a mentor. Like a captain, a captain role.

“I want to help those guys in any way that I can. Whenever they need me, they can hit me up. If they’ve got any questions, they can hit me up. I’m here for those guys. I’m here for this team. I’m here to contribute to the team and help them to win games also.”

Texans vs. Jaguars Wednesday injury report: G-T Tytus Howard estimated to not practice

The Houston Texans held a walkthrough Wednesday, and G-T Tytus Howard was estimated to have been a non-participant.

The Houston Texans held a walkthrough Wednesday ahead of their Week 17 encounter with the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time from NRG Stadium.

The practice report is merely an estimation of participation had Wednesday’s session been a full practice.

Guard-tackle Tytus Howard (concussion), center-guard Jimmy Morrissey (concussion), tight end Teagan Quitoriano (thigh), and safety M.J. Stewart (concussion) were listed as non-participants.

The Texans listed guard Kenyon Green (ankle) and guard Justin McCray (hamstring) as limited participants had the walkthrough been a full practice.

Houston had no injured players listed as full participants.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was listed as a non-participant with a toe injury.

The Houston Texans may be without their first-round tandem on the left side.

With 6:44 to go in the first quarter, Howard was injured on a Royce Freeman run. Howard went to the blue medical tent on the sideline and then into the locker room. The Texans stated that Howard was questionable to return as he was in the concussion protocol.

Howard had played left guard going back to Week 15 as first-rounder Kenyon Green from Texas A&M has missed with an ankle injury. The pairing of Howard and Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil opened up running lanes for Freeman and Dare Ogunbowale.

In the third quarter, the Texans downgraded Howard to out.

Texans RT Tytus Howard confident in run game if RB Dameon Pierce is out against the Chiefs

Houston Texans RT Tytus Howard says the run game should still be productive even if RB Dameon Pierce has to miss with an ankle injury.

Dameon Pierce has been the one good thing going for the Houston Texans offense.

The rookie has generated 939 rushing yards and five total touchdowns — four on the ground and one catch. Both categories lead the 1-11-1 Texans in 2022.

Houston was without the fourth-rounder’s services for most of the fourth quarter in the 27-23 loss to the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Arlington in Week 14. The marked drive that will standout to Houston fans is the second-to-last possession of the game when the Texans couldn’t punch it in on a drive starting first-and-goal from the Cowboys’ 4-yard line with 5:37 left in the game and Houston leading 23-20.

Pierce left the game with an ankle injury, carrying 22 times for 78 yards. The rest of Houston’s running backs combined for five carries for minus-5 yards.

With the Florida product leaving the stadium in a walking boot Sunday, there are concerns as to whether he will be ready to go against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15.

If Pierce can’t go, right tackle Tytus Howard is confident in the run game’s ability to produce with the rookie out of the lineup.

“I think the running game still should be good,” Howard told reporters Tuesday. “Everybody knows Dameon is a good player, but we believe in Rex (Burkhead) and Dare (Ogunbowale). They can pick up the slack and do good for the run game.”

Burkhead had two carries for minus-3 yards and has 26 carries for 80 yards on the year.

Ogunbowale had a carry for minus-3 yards and has eight carries for 27 yards and a touchdown on the season.

Nevertheless Howard remains confident in the run game, especially if the offensive line can clear space.

Said Howard: “At the end of the day, we block the guys up front. We know those guys can make the plays. That’s where it starts at.”

Houston kicks off against the Chiefs at 12:00 p.m. Central Time from NRG Stadium Sunday.

Texans RT Tytus Howard pleased with game plan against the Cowboys, laments not scoring on goal line

Houston Texans RT Tytus Howard liked the way the offense moved the ball in Week 14, but says they need to finish their goal-to-go opportunities.

ARLINGTON — Heading into Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Houston Texans did not have many positives going their way.

Second-year quarterback Davis Mills was inserted back into the offense after being replaced for two games by backup Kyle Allen due to ineffectiveness. The Texans didn’t know how Mills would respond to being placed on the bench.

The offensive line had a tough job ahead of them, going up against one of the top-rated defenses in the league, led by linebacker Micah Parsons who, at times, can be hard to contain once he gets a running start.

Two offensive weapons in starting wide receivers, Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins, were ruled out of the game due to injuries. That would leave players like Chris Moore and Phillip Dorsett to pick up the slack, even though they did not have a lot of first-team reps with Mills.

The list could go on and on with the number of issues the Texans would face heading into AT&T Stadium.

Yet, with just over three minutes left in the game, they had a lead on the team that most have predicted to make it to at least the NFC Championship Game.

Houston was able to stay in the game offensively by deploying a two-quarterback system with Mills and third-string backup Jeff Driskel. They alternated in and out of the game, keeping the Cowboys’ explosive defense guessing what would happen on each snap.

The Texans held a six-minute advantage in time of possession over the Cowboys in the 27-23 loss, mainly due to the job done by the offensive line.

For the second consecutive game against an elite NFL defense, they provided running lanes for rookie running back Dameon Pierce, who finished the game with 78 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries before exiting the game with an ankle injury.

Houston held an opponent to no sacks in back-to-back games, which is very hard to do, especially when the Cowboys are second in the NFL with a total of 48 sacks.

“I think we had a good game plan coming in,” said Texans offensive lineman Tytus Howard. “We wanted to establish the run first and then go to the pass. We did that good early. I think, as a front, we played hard, and everybody on our offense played hard. We kept them from getting to the quarterback, but in the end, on the goal line, we have to score.”

With a 23-20 late in the fourth quarter, the defense forced a turnover on Dak Prescott inside the Cowboys’ ten-yard line, giving the offense a chance to increase the lead. The Texans got the ball down to the Dallas one-yard line before turning it over on downs after quarterback Jeff Driskel was tackled before crossing the goal line.

The Cowboys would get the ball back and go 98 yards to score to put them up by four points. Houston got the ball back with under a minute left, but a failed hail mary pass was intercepted by a Dallas defensive back and ended the game.

Howard believes that the offense may have found some continuity in the offensive game plan in the future.

“If it is one thing I can take forward into the next game and the rest of the season, is that people say we have one of the worst offenses in the league, and I don’t believe that,” said Howard. “The Cowboys have one of the top defenses in the league, and I think we ran the ball and moved the ball up and down the field all game. If we can do it on them, we can do it on anybody else. So, we just have to have that mindset every week.”
