Ravens sign RB Le’Veon Bell to practice squad

The Ravens signed RB Le’Veon Bell to their practice squad

The Baltimore Ravens saw multiple running backs on their roster suffer season-ending injuries over the last week. First, up-and-coming rusher J.K. Dobbins suffered a torn ACL during Baltimore’s 37-3 preseason win over the Washington Football Team. Just over a week later, it was announced that running back Justice Hill tore his achilles in practice and would also miss the entirety of the 2021 season.

The two injuries left the Ravens with just two healthy running backs in Gus Edwards and Ty’Son Williams, so the team needed to add one (or multiple) running backs with the 2021 regular season slated to start in less than seven days.

On Tuesday Baltimore added a very accomplished player to their backfield in veteran Le’Veon Bell.

Bell has had quite a lot of success at the NFL level, rushing for over 6,400 yards while adding over 3,200 more through the air as a receiver. He won’t be asked to play a lead-back role in the Ravens’ offense, but could definitely do some damage as a receiver and a pass blocker.

The veteran will start the year on the Ravens’ practice squad, but could quickly be moved to the active roster full-time if he plays well after his two allotted practice squad call-ups.

Ravens RB Justice Hill tears achilles, will miss entire 2021 season

Ravens running back Justice Hill tore his achillies, ending his season

The Baltimore Ravens saw running back J.K. Dobbins go down for the year with a torn ACL during their 37-3 preseason win over the Washington Football Team. Now Baltimore is dealing with yet another season-ending injury to a rusher who was expected to be a solid contributor to their offense.

After missing a chunk of 2021 training camp and the preseason, running back Justice Hill made the final 53-man roster after Dobbins went down with his injury. However, Hill will now join his teammate on injured reserve as he tore his achilles in practice.

At this point, Hill is a loss for both the Ravens’ offense as well as their special teams unit. He is a versatile option out of the backfield, while also being a great gunner on special teams. While he hasn’t had the most success over his two years in the NFL, with an increased role he could have seen an increase in production.

Baltimore will now look to outside options for running back help, as the team is now left with two running backs on their roster in Gus Edwards and Ty’Son Williams.

The Baltimore Ravens will be without running back J.K. Dobbins for the entirety of the 2021 season, as he suffered a torn ACL during the team’s 37-3 preseason win over the Washington Football Team. Baltimore will miss the production of the second-year player, but have multiple running backs waiting in the wings to help move forward without him.

Two of those players are running backs Gus Edwards and Ty’Son Williams. Edwards has had plenty of success at the NFL level, while Williams is looking to prove himself. When Edwards was asked about the second-year rusher, the fourth-year player had high praise for Williams.

“Since we signed him last year, he’s been doing a great job in practice. Everybody gets to see how hard he runs now. He makes a lot of good decisions, and he’s going to do a lot of good things for us this year.”

With Dobbins, out, Edwards will now take on the lionshare of the carries, while Williams and Justice Hill will be next in line for work. Williams showed many great skills during the 2021 preseason, and will hope to carry those over into the regular season where he could make a massive impact with a projected big increase in opportunities.

Ravens RB Ty’Son Williams explains when he felt like he turned a corner

Ravens RB Ty’Son Williams explained where he thinks he turned a corner to make Baltimore’s final 53-man roster

The Baltimore Ravens saw the emergence of running back Ty’Son Williams over the course of 2021 training camp and the preseason. The second-year rusher stepped up and earned a spot on the 53-man roster by showing off his skills rushing the football, receiving, as well as in pass protection.

When Williams was asked about when he felt like he turned a corner and had shown enough to make the final team, the running back said that the game action was the best part for him.

“Camp and practices are good, and like I said, you go out there and work hard, but I feel like games are probably the most important. Those are real, live reps against another team. And then once the games started, I started playing in the games, and I started playing at a high level. I’ve been practicing that way, also, but I think games are really important to kind of instill that confidence in you.”

Williams did play at a high level during games. The competition for the third running back job on Baltimore’s roster didn’t get much attention until the Ravens’ first preseason game, where Justice Hill struggled and Williams took everyone by surprise. Hill got hurt in that game, while Williams continued to look impressive. When J.K. Dobbins went down with a season-ending knee injury in Baltimore’s final exhibition game, Williams suddenly became the second running back on the team due to his impressive body of work.

Williams will now be sharing the rushing load with Edwards and Hill. He absolutely earned his spot on the team, and it all started with the game action that he was able to perform so well in.

Ravens tried to claim former Broncos RB Royce Freeman on waivers

The Ravens tried to claim a former Denver Broncos running back off of waivers

The Baltimore Ravens lost running back J.K. Dobbins for the season to a torn ACL during their Week 3 preseason win against the Washington Football Team. His loss is a brutal blow for a Baltimore offense that was going to rely on him in a big way in 2021.

Fellow running backs Gus Edwards, Ty’Son Williams and Justice Hill will all be tasked with replacing the production that Dobbins would have brought to the table. However, that doesn’t mean the Ravens aren’t looking for other ways to soften the blow of losing their second-year running back. Field Yates of ESPN reported that Baltimore put a waiver claim in for former Denver Broncos running back Royce Freeman but weren’t awarded him due to being lower on the waiver order than the Carolina Panthers, who ended up securing him.

In his first three NFL seasons Freeman has accumulated 297 rushes for 1,887 yards and eight touchdowns to go along with 69 receptions for 409 yards and one receiving touchdown. He would have been a solid addition to the Ravens’ running back room, but Carolina was able to pick him up with their higher waiver priority.

Since the Ravens put in a claim for Freeman, it’s likely that they are looking at other rushers in order to make sure they have enough depth in the event of an injury to Edwards or another one of their running backs. It wouldn’t be suprising to see Baltimore add a running back or two in the coming days or weeks.

J.K. Dobbins injury: Why the Ravens would be in good hands with Gus Edwards

Even if J.K. Dobbins does miss extended time, the Ravens’ backfield is in good hands

The Baltimore Ravens are awaiting injury news on running back J.K. Dobbins, who suffered a nasty looking knee injury in the team’s 37-3 preseason win over the Washington Football Team. The second-year player was hit low after catching a screen pass, immediatly grabbing for his knee once he went down.

If Dobbins misses any time on the field, it’s a big blow to Baltimore’s offense. Many are expecting him to break out in 2021, and a player of Dobbins’ caliber makes the Ravens’ a better team. However, not all is lost even if the former Ohio State University star is sidelined. In fact, they are in rather good hands with fellow running back Gus Edwards.

Although the team would miss Dobbins and his balance, agility, cut back ability and power, Edwards is a well-rounded runner who has improved in each of his first three seasons at the NFL level. Widely regarded as a pure north-south runner out of the Rutgers University, he has added a plethora of different things to his skill set, including cut back ability, improved vision, receiving skills and much more.

Edwards is also a beacon of consistency, never averaging below five yards per carry in each of his first three seasons as a professional. He almost never loses yardage, and is as reliable as they come in short yardage situations. He is also now versatile enough to pick up some of what Dobbins would leave if he is forced to miss time with an injury.

Aside from Edwards, Baltimore also has breakout running back Ty’Son Williams waiting in the wings, as well as Nate McCrary and even Justice Hill. The Ravens have had an extremely deep running back room for years, and although their depth would be tested without Dobbins, Edwards and company is a great backup plan to have, especially considering Edwards is expected to have a major role in Baltimore’s offense regardless of if Dobbins is out for an extended period or not.

Instant analysis of Ravens’ 37-3 preseason win over Washington Football Team

The Baltimore Ravens wrapped up their 2021 preseason in dominant fashion

The Baltimore Ravens secured their record-breaking 20th-straight preseason win on Saturday with a dominant 37-3 victory over the Washington Football Team. Baltimore’s offense dominated for the whole night, and the Ravens’ defense stonewalled Washington’s offense for much of the contest.

On the night, quarterback Tyler Huntley was spectacular, finishing the game completing 24 of 33 passes for 285 yards and four passing touchdowns, as well as picking up 14 yards and another touchdown on six carries. He is the clear winner of Baltimore’s backup quarterback job, earning it with phenomenal play throughout all three preseason weeks.

Other standouts from the game include running backs Ty’Son Williams and Nate McCrary, as well as wide receivers Binjimen Victor and James Proche II. However, the story of the game unfortunately came in the first quarter with a huge part of the Ravens’ offense going down with a potentially serious injury.

J.K. Dobbins caught a screen pass and was hit low, which caused him to immediatly grab at his knee. He wasn’t able to put any weight on his leg, and was carted to the locker room. There’s always a risk of getting injured in football, and Baltimore now awaits MRI results on Dobbins.

On defense there were plenty of solid contributors including Chris Smith and Nigel Warrior. It was an all around effort for the defense, which held Washington to just three points and 1-of-11 on third down.

After ending the preseason with a bang, the Ravens will now shift their attention to cut down day as they will have to trim their roster to 53 players. Once that task is complete, the team will look to start the regular season with the same dominance that they ended the preseason with, taking on the Las Vegas Raiders in a Week 1 primetime matchup.

Stock up, stock down from Ravens’ 20-3 preseason win over Panthers

In the second week of the 2021 preseason, the Ravens had many players increase their stock, but some saw their standing fall

The Baltimore Ravens went into Carolina and came out with a preseason victory against the Panthers, winning 20-3. Baltimore held Carolina relatively in check for the entire contest, and there were plenty of standouts across the board.

Offensive and defensive players who needed strong performances to get closer to earning a roster spot impressed, and even special teams contributors got in on that action. However, there were a few players who didn’t play due to injury that had their stock drop.

We take a look at players who increased their stock against the Panthers, as well as those who saw their stock fall.

Instant analysis of Ravens’ 20-3 preseason win over Panthers

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the Carolina Panthers by the final score of 20-3, securing their 19th-straight preseason win, which ties the all-time record set by Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers from 1959-1962.

It was a sloppy start for both teams, as turnovers, three-and-outs, and missed opportunities were extremely present. Quarterback Tyler Huntley played for the majority of the game, and after a slow start, he finished the game completing 24 of 34 passes for 187 yards and one interception, as well as rushing the ball seven times for 23 yards, further cementing his place as the backup quarterback to Lamar Jackson.

As for the rest of the offense, running backs Ty’Son Williams and Nate McCrary had great games, taking advantage of Justice Hill’s absence due to injury. Wide receiver Tylan Wallace and tight end Josh Oliver also had good games, although both had plays that they would certainly like back, as Oliver fumbled a ball and both players dropped passes. The offensive line also had a much better performance than in Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints, but they still have some work to do.

On defense, the unit was flying around the field from start to finish. Safeties DeShon Elliott and Chuck Clark both made huge plays, linebackers Patrick Queen and Malik Harrison played well in some extended run, and young playmakers in the secondary stepped up, including Nigel Warrior and Ar’Darius Washington.

The Ravens showed how deep of a team they are, especially without some of their stars playing on both sides of the ball. The team got multiple positive contributions from their starters and their backups, which is a great sign, as Baltimore is getting ready to rely on a plethora of players during the 2021 season.

Even after the game got off to a slow start, the Ravens responded and put together an overall solid performance. Baltimore will go for history next Saturday against the Washington Football Team, as they aim to win their 20th-straight preseason game.
