Bears ‘leaning’ toward Nathan Peterman as backup QB in Week 1

While the Bears haven’t made a definitive decision about QB2, it sounds like Nathan Peterman will be Justin Fields’ backup in Week 1.

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for their Week 1 opener against the Green Bay Packers, where there’s still a question mark at quarterback…back quarterback, that is.

While Justin Fields is gearing up for his third NFL season, there’s a question about whether it’ll be rookie Tyson Bagent or veteran Nathan Peterman backing him up on Sunday.

The Bears have remained mum about the answer for the last couple of weeks, but head coach Matt Eberflus indicated Wednesday that they’re “leaning” toward rolling with Peterman as QB2 this Sunday.

“That’s what we’re looking at right now,” Eberflus said. “We haven’t made a final decision, but that’s where we’re leaning to now for this first game. But we’ll see where it goes during the course of the week, and we certainly reserve the right to make any adjustments as we need to going forward.”

But even if Peterman is the backup in Week 1, that doesn’t rule out a scenario where Bagent can win the QB2 job at some point this season.

“I think that’s to be said for the whole football team,” Eberflus said. “I think we’re always looking at guys developing and improving during the course of the year, and that person could jump into a No. 2 role or could stay where he is. I think that’s with everybody for us.”

It’s not an indictment on Bagent, who was easily the most impressive quarterback behind Fields in the preseason. Right now, it simply sounds like Chicago wants to roll with a veteran behind Fields.

Bears haven’t made a decision about backup quarterback yet

The Bears need to make a decision about QB2 between Tyson Bagent and Nathan Peterman.

The Chicago Bears have a looming quarterback question — one that has nothing to do with starter Justin Fields. We still don’t know who Chicago’s backup quarterback is just over a week out from the season opener against the Green Bay Packers.

Undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent made the 53-man roster over veterans P.J. Walker and Nathan Peterman. But the team remained non-committal to Bagent as QB2 heading into the season.

Then the Bears re-signed Peterman to the active roster just two days after he was release as part of final cuts. Head coach Matt Eberflus is excited to have the veteran signal caller back.

“We’re sure glad to have him back,” Eberflus said. “He’s really good for that room. Him and Justin [Fields] learned the offense together, so-to-speak, so they’re speaking the same language, so they understand it really well. It’s good to have him in the room.”

With the Week 1 opener right around the corner, the Bears have yet to determine whether Bagent or Peterman will serve as Fields’ backup.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen in the future with who’s going to be up for the game, who’s going to be the backup,” Eberflus said earlier this week. “We’ll decide that as we go.”

How Bears rookie Tyson Bagent beat out P.J. Walker for QB2

Bears HC Matt Eberflus stopped short of naming Tyson Bagent the backup quarterback just yet.

From undrafted rookie to backup quarterback, Tyson Bagent was the most pleasant surprise when the Chicago Bears unveiled their initial 53-man roster.

Bagent’s magical preseason catapulted him into the QB2 role, where he beat out the likes of veterans P.J. Walker and Nathan Peterman, who were both part of roster cuts. That leaves Bagent as the only other quarterback on the roster behind starter Justin Fields.

But head coach Matt Eberflus stopped short of naming Bagent the backup quarterback just yet, explaining they’re going to let the roster work itself out.

“Just kinda letting the roster finalize itself,” Eberflus said. “We certainly feel great about where he is. He’s put his best foot forward, and we’re excited where we see him going in the future.”

Eberflus said they could look to add a veteran to the room, which could very well be Peterman signing to the practice squad. But, for all intents and purposes, Bagent appears set as QB2 heading into the regular season opener.

As for how an undrafted rookie out of Division II Shepherd was able to beat out a veteran, Eberflus credited Bagent for creating that competition, which he ultimately won.

“It was an open competition, and it was created,” Eberflus said. “It was created by the players. The players created that. Tyson really created that in practice, and he did it and created it in the games. What we saw from him was execution, poise, accuracy, and the ability to move the ball down the field. And again, he’s put his best foot forward.”

Bears release Nathan Peterman, Tyson Bagent in line for QB2

With the Bears releasing Nathan Peterman, rookie Tyson Bagent is officially QB2.

The Chicago Bears continue to trim their roster down to 53 players, which includes the surprise cuts of quarterback P.J. Walker and offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood.

Following Walker’s release, it all but guaranteed undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent a spot on the 53-man roster. Now, it appears he’s secured the backup quarterback job.

According to Tom Pelissero, the Bears are releasing quarterback Nathan Peterman. The team wants Peterman back on the practice squad.

Many speculated Chicago would carry three quarterbacks on the roster, with Peterman serving as a veteran presence alongside Bagent. But it seems as if the Bears are confident in having Bagent serve as the backup for starter Justin Fields.

Bagent had an impressive training camp and preseason, where he created competition for that backup job behind Fields.

Now that Chicago doesn’t have to carry three quarterbacks, it frees up an additional roster spot elsewhere.

Undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent wins the Bears backup QB job

Undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent from D-II Shepherd wins the Bears backup QB job

It’s been an impressive summer for a lot of the quarterbacks in the NFL draft class of 2023. From Bryce Young in Carolina to Aidan O’Connell in Las Vegas, Dorian Thompson-Robinson in Cleveland and others in between, the QBs selected in April’s draft are off to a strong start in the preseason.

The early success extends beyond the drafted quarterbacks, too. In Chicago, undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent performed well enough throughout training camp and the preseason to win the Bears’ backup QB spot behind Justin Fields. Bagent, from D-II powerhouse Shepherd, beat out veteran P.J. Walker for the No. 2 spot.

It’s an impressive rise for Bagent, who had a mixed bag of a Senior Bowl week that likely kept him from being drafted in the late rounds. He completed 20 of his 29 passes for 156 yards and one INT in Chicago’s three preseason games, also running for two touchdowns.

Bears Twitter reacts to surprise cut of QB P.J. Walker

The Bears have released P.J. Walker, paving the way for rookie Tyson Bagent as QB2. Safe to say, the move didn’t come as a complete shock.

The Chicago Bears have started to make roster cuts ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, which includes the surprising release of quarterback P.J. Walker.

Walker, who signed a two-year deal this offseason, was expected to serve as Justin Fields’ backup this season. But Walker notably struggled during training camp and the preseason.

It certainly didn’t help that undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent shined with his opportunities, and he seems in line to serve as Fields’ backup heading into the season. Although, it’ll be interesting to see if Chicago elects to carry a third quarterback in Nathan Peterman or simply roll with Fields and Bagent.

As you can imagine, Bears fans had plenty to say about Walker’s release and what that means for Bagent as QB2. Safe to say, this move didn’t come as a complete shock. The writing has been on the wall for a couple of weeks.

Here’s how Bears Twitter reacted to the surprising release of Walker:

6 takeaways from the Bears’ 24-21 preseason loss to the Bills

From a murky backup quarterback competition to Trevis Gipson’s trade request, here are our takeaways from Saturday’s Bears preseason loss.

Just as quickly as it started, the 2023 NFL preseason has come to a close for the Chicago Bears. They wrapped up their finale against the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field but fell 24-21 to finish the preseason 1-2, their first losing record in August since 2019.

Saturday’s game had a bit more juice to it, however, as both teams played their starters on offense and defense to begin the game. Bears quarterback Justin Fields struggled out of the gate while Bills quarterback Josh Allen drove his team downfield on their first drive to put seven points on the board. Backup quarterback Kyle Allen also orchestrated multiple scoring drives on the Bears backup defense.

On offense, Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagenet once again used his legs to find the endzone, and Cairo Santos netted a pair of field goals throughout the day. The Bears clawed their way back to keep things close thanks to a touchdown pass from P.J. Walker later in the game, but never held a lead the entire day.

With the preseason now in the books, it’s about time to turn our focus to the regular season, but there were still things to take away from the final dress rehearsal. Here are our takeaways from Saturday’s preseason loss.

Bears vs. Bills: Everything we know about Chicago’s 24-21 loss

The Bears dropped their preseason finale to the Buffalo Bills. Here’s everything we know about the loss.

The 2023 preseason is officially in the books for the Chicago Bears following their 24-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The Bears were down from the start after the Bills, with quarterback Josh Allen, took their opening possession 72 yards on 12 plays to get a touchdown. Chicago never led in the game, but did cut the deficit a few times.

The Bears got touchdowns from backup quarterbacks Tyson Bagent and P.J. Walker while Cairo Santos converted all three field goal attempts. Bills backup quarterback Kyle Allen, however, kept the Bears at bay as he led three scoring drives of his own. But the Bears wouldn’t go away easy.

Walker’s touchdown to Robert Burns late in the fourth quarter and a two-point conversion got the Bears within three, but it wasn’t enough as the Bills chewed up clock to ice the game. The Bears finished the preseason 1-2, their first losing preseason since 2019.

Here is everything we know about Chicago’s preseason loss.

Bears Twitter reacts to Tyson Bagent’s performance vs. Bills

Bears rookie Tyson Bagent appears to have locked up the QB2 job. Here’s how Twitter reacted to his outing against the Bills.

The Tyson Bagent Show continued into Saturday’s preseason finale against the Bills, where the Bears rookie appeared to all but secure the backup quarterback job — or at the very least, a roster spot.

Bagent was the backup quarterback for Saturday’s game, where he closed out his impressive preseason. While the boxscore won’t show it — he completed 7-of-14 for 43 yards with an interception for a 26.8 passer rating — Bagent shined in this third preseason action.

Bagent looked poised and confident in a pocket that was consistently collapsing, and he made some nice throws — including a few that were dropped, like a touchdown by tight end Stephen Carlson.

While Bagent isn’t exactly known for his rushing ability, he made some plays with his legs. Bagent had seven carries for 23 yards and a rushing touchdown.

Following Bagent’s action against the Bills, NFL Twitter chimed in with different reactions — where there was an unanimous reaction that Bagent earned the QB2 job. Here’s a look at what fans were saying on Saturday:

WATCH: Bears QB Tyson Bagent rushes for TD vs. Bills

The undrafted rookie is making plays with his legs for the second preseason game in a row.

Another preseason game, another spectacular rushing touchdown from Chicago Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent. The undrafted rookie out of Shepherd continues to turn heads this preseason and relieved Justin Fields as QB2 to start the second quarter against the Buffalo Bills. A few possessions later, he led the Bears to their first touchdown drive of the day on an eight-yard run.

Bagent and the Bears orchestrated a drive that spanned nine plays and 42 yards. Just like last week against the Indianapolis Colts, Bagent and rookie running back Roschon Johnson were the catalysts for the drive. Johnson’s 11-yard screen pass from Bagent on fourth down kept the chains moving, and a few plays later, the quarterback scrambled for another first down before doing it again to get the touchdown.

The rushing score was Bagent’s second of the preseason, as he continues to make a case to be the team’s primary backup. He followed that drive with a near touchdown pass to tight end Stephen Carlson that was dropped before getting intercepted. Bagent finished the first half going 4-of-10 for 18 yards and an interception.

At halftime, the Bears trail the Bills 17-10.
