5 ex-Broncos players involved in Super Bowl LVII

Remember former Broncos punter Brett Kern? He’s now aiming to win a Super Bowl with the Eagles.

Five former members of the Denver Broncos will be involved in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday evening.

For the Philadelphia Eagles, punter Brett Kern will have a key role on special teams. Kern started his career with the Broncos in 2008 and played two seasons in Denver before later going on to become a three-time Pro Bowler with the Tennessee Titans.

The Eagles also have three former Broncos on their practice squad: wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland, safety Anthony Harris and cornerback Mac McCain III. Cleveland is a former Denver draft pick who spent time on the Broncos’ practice squad with Harris earlier this season.

McCain signed with Denver as a college free agent in 2021. He bounced between the Broncos and Eagles three times as a rookie and has now settled in on Philly’s practice squad.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, have former Denver running back Melvin Gordon on their practice squad. Gordon played with the Broncos from 2020-2022 before being cut midway through the 2022 season.

Sunday’s Super Bowl will be televised on Fox.

Florida Gators tied for lead with most players on Super Bowl team rosters

All seven of these former Gators are in a position to be a part of gridiron glory.

Super Bowl LVII is set for a Sunday, Feb. 12, meeting between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles inside State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. While there is still a bit of time before the 6:30 p.m. EST kickoff, the bookmakers appear to be slightly bullish on the Eagles while the Chiefs are looking for their second NFL title in three appearances over the past four seasons.

Both teams have Florida football alumni among their ranks, with four expected to play in the mid-February championship game. However, if one includes those listed on injured reserve or the practice squad as USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg did in his recent article on collegiate representation in the big game, the Orange and Blue are tied for the most former Gators among the final two teams. Take a look at the names and a brief blurb from Myerberg below.

Kansas City: DE [autotag]Carlos Dunlap[/autotag], WR [autotag]Kadarius Toney[/autotag], P [autotag]Tommy Townsend[/autotag], RB [autotag]La’Mical Perine[/autotag].

Philadelphia: WR [autotag]Tyrie Cleveland[/autotag], S [autotag]C.J. Gardner-Johnson[/autotag], OT [autotag]Fred Johnson[/autotag].

Dunlap joined Kansas City in the offseason and chipped in four sacks as part of the Chiefs’ defensive line rotation. Toney injured his ankle in the AFC championship game win against Cincinnati but should be ready for the Super Bowl. For the Eagles, Gardner-Johnson tied for the league lead with six interceptions after being traded by New Orleans in the preseason amid a contract dispute.

Florida is tied with the Oklahoma Sooners with the most players mentioned at seven, while the Florida State Seminoles follow with six, and Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan Wolverines, Mississippi State Bulldogs and Nebraska Cornhuskers with four.

5 ex-Broncos involved in NFL’s playoff games Saturday

After making his playoff debut last week, Adam Gotsis will look to upset the Chiefs on Saturday.

Story update: We mistakenly overlooked ex-Broncos safety Anthony Harris, who was elevated from the Eagles’ practice squad to their game-day roster on Friday. Our original post can be seen below.

Five former members of the Denver Broncos will be involved in the NFL’s divisional-round playoff games on Saturday.

First, in the Jacksonville Jaguars-Kansas City Chiefs game, defensive lineman Adam Gotsis will feature on the Jags’ defense, and quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy will be working with Trevor Lawrence.

Gotsis played for the Broncos from 2016-2019, totaling 109 tackles and five sacks. He joined the Jaguars in 2020 and made his playoff debut last weekend. McCoy served as Denver’s offensive coordinator from 2009-2012 and again in 2017.

The second game will also involve a pair of former Broncos. The Philadelphia Eagles now have wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland, who signed with Philly earlier this week after Denver opted to not sign him to a reserve/future contract.

The New York Giants, meanwhile, have defensive coordinator Don Martindale, who held the same position with the Broncos in 2010. “Wink” Martindale was promoted from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator after one season in Denver.

The only team without a clear Broncos connection playing on Saturday is the Kansas City Chiefs. All the more reason to dislike them.

Eagles sign ex-Broncos wide receiver during playoffs

Two ex-Broncos who did not receive reserve/future deals from Denver signed with Eagles (Tyrie Cleveland) and Patriots (Olakunle Fatukasi).

The Philadelphia Eagles have added some depth to their wide receiver room ahead of their playoff showdown with the New York Giants.

The Eagles signed former Denver Broncos wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland to their practice squad earlier this week, via Glenn Erby of Eagles Wire. Philly will have the option to elevate Cleveland to the game-day roster for Saturday’s game against the Giants.

Cleveland spent most of the 2022 season on Denver’s practice squad. At the end of their season, the Broncos signed nine of their practice squad players to reserve/future contracts. Cleveland was one of five players who did not receive a reserve/future deal from Denver, making him a free agent.

After being let go by the Broncos, Cleveland quickly found a home with the Eagles. Three of the four other players — WR Kaden Davis, TE Dalton Keene and OL George Moore — remain free agents. The fourth, ILB Olakunle Fatukasi, signed with the New England Patriots.

Story update: The Philadelphia Eagles have signed TE Dalton Keene to a reserve/future contract.

Eagles sign WR Tyrie Cleveland to the practice squad

The Philadelphia Eagles are signing wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland to the practice squad ahead of the NFC Divisional Round matchup against the Giants

The Eagles are always looking to add talent to the roster and on Tuesday, the team signed wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland to the 16-man practice squad.

A 2020 seventh-round draft pick out of the University of Florida, Cleveland played in 23 career games for the Broncos, amassing 91 yards on nine receptions.

Cleveland made six appearances this season, mainly on special teams.

His most recent game action came in Week 10 for the Broncos, when he saw three targets in a loss to the Titans, as Denver was without starting wide receivers Jerry Jeudy (ankle) and KJ Hamler (hamstring) who were sidelined by injury.

Broncos did not re-sign 5 members of their practice squad

The Broncos did not give WR Tyrie Cleveland a reserve/future contract.

The Denver Broncos signed nine members of their 2022 practice squad to reserve/future contracts on Monday. Those nine players will officially join the team’s 90-man offseason roster when the new league year begins in March.

Denver had five other players on the practice squad at the end of the season and the team chose to not sign them to reserve/future deals. These five players were not signed:

  • WR Tyrie Cleveland
  • WR Kaden Davis
  • ILB Olakunle Fatukasi
  • TE Dalton Keene
  • OL George Moore

Cleveland (6-2, 205 pounds) is the most notable player on the list. He was selected by former Broncos general manager John Elway in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Florida.

Cleveland played primarily on special teams in his first two seasons and he initially made the team’s 53-man roster for the 2022 season but was waived six games into the year. Denver then re-signed Cleveland to the practice squad, where he remained for the rest of the season.

Cleveland caught eight passes for 91 yards in 23 games.

Broncos made several roster moves on Tuesday

Tom Compton is officially back on the 53-man roster. View the full recap of the team’s moves below.

The Denver Broncos brought in two players for tryouts — including long snapper Tucker Addington — and made five roster moves on Tuesday.

Here’s a quick recap of the team’s transactions going into Wednesday’s first practice of the week leading up to the Las Vegas Raiders game.

Broncos injuries: 4 players trending toward playing in Week 1

The Broncos are hopeful that Tyrie Cleveland, Billy Turner, Randy Gregory and Jonas Griffith will all be available in Week 1.

The Denver Broncos seem to have mostly good news on the injury front as they prepare for a Monday Night Football showdown with the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1.

After missing all of preseason with a throat injury, wide receiver/special teams ace Tyrie Cleveland now appears to be on track for Sept. 12.

“That’s what we’re aiming for … he’s going to be able to get some reps [at practice],” Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said earlier this week. “We’re very excited for him to get back.”

The Broncos have also said that they’re aiming for offensive lineman Billy Turner (knee) and outside linebacker Randy Gregory (shoulder) to be ready for Week 1, but they’re being cautious with both players.

“We still want to be careful with both of those guys because of the severity of those things,” Hackett said. “We’ll keep continuing to work them in.”

Hackett also said the Broncos are “crossing our fingers” that inside linebacker Jonas Griffith (elbow) will be available against Seattle.

We’ll know more when the Broncos release their first injury report of the season next week.

Tyrie Cleveland will make the Broncos’ tough roster decisions even tougher

Tyrie Cleveland makes the Broncos’ wide receiver depth chart even tougher to predict.

The Denver Broncos have a crowded wide receiver depth chart, and Tyrie Cleveland’s status has made the position even more complicated.

Broncos special teams coordinator Dwayne Stukes has said publicly multiple times this offseason that he would like to have Cleveland be a “core special teams player” this year, but the receiver is still recovering from a throat injury and he has not yet played in preseason.

Even if Cleveland does return in time for Saturday’s preseason finale, Denver might have to choose between a key special teams player and another receiver who could potentially contribute more on offense.

“Those are the fun battles that we started getting into,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said Wednesday when asked about considering a player’s special teams abilities when building a roster. “[Every coach] wants the guys that they potentially want, so there is definitely a battle. It is a three-phase game.

“That’s something I’ve always believed in. I love special teams. I was a part of special teams and coached special teams. I think that you definitely have to take that into perspective. If there is somebody that is going to offer you a dynamic player and a play maker in that role and on that phase, you definitely have to take that into consideration.”

Assuming that Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and Montrell Washington are locks, the Broncos have two more spots open (if they carry six receivers). The list of candidates for those two spots includes Brandon Johnson, Kendall Hinton, Seth Williams and Jalen Virgil.

Even if the team decides to carry seven receivers, Denver will have to cut a talented offensive prospect if Cleveland makes the 53-man roster primarily as a special teams contributor. The Broncos might try to trade a receiver to make the decision a little easier, but as the roster stands now, Cleveland’s status is tough to predict.

It won’t be an easy decision.

The deadline to submit a 53-man roster is next Tuesday.

Broncos wide receiver competition is ‘very close’

The Broncos will have to make some tough decisions at WR when they trim the roster down to 53 players.

Even after losing Tim Patrick to a season-ending knee injury, the Denver Broncos have a crowded wide receiver room entering the final week of preseason.

Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy top the team’s depth chart, with KJ Hamler the presumed favorite to win WR3 duties this season. Behind them, fifth-round draft pick Montrell Washington also seems like a lock as the team’s return specialist.

If the Broncos carry six receivers, there’s only room for two more after those presumed locks.

The candidates for the final two spots include fan favorite Kendall Hinton, special teams ace Tyrie Cleveland and summer risers Brandon Johnson, Seth Williams and Jalen Virgil.

“It’s funny, every time you think somebody is going to separate themselves, another guy steps up,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said of the competition at WR. “It’s not necessary that anybody is taking a step back, it’s that other people are stepping up. As a coach, that’s what you’re trying to create at all positions. So, I think it is very close.

“I think those guys are really working hard and they’re getting a great understanding of the pass game and what we are trying to accomplish. I think that’s what is good to see and it’s a positive problem to have for us.”

Denver will play a final preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday before finalizing a 53-man roster by the following Tuesday. The receivers that don’t make the active roster could be candidates for the practice squad — if they’re not claimed off waivers by other teams.
