Former Wisconsin forward Tyler Wahl finds home for 2024 NBA Summer League

Tyler Wahl finds home for NBA Summer League

The 2024 NBA Draft is in the books and although former Wisconsin Badgers forward Tyler Wahl wasn’t selected, he has found a home to play in this year’s NBA Summer League.

Wahl will be a part of his hometown Timberwolves roster during summer league, giving him a chance to compete with other NBA hopefuls who went undrafted, as well as those that did.

Minnesota added two first round players in the first round of the draft Wednesday, bringing in Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham (8th overall) via trade from the Spurs and Illinois wing Terrence Shannon Jr. (27th overall).

Wahl spent five seasons with the Badgers from 2019-2024, appearing in 162 games, including 121 starts. Most recently, Wahl averaged 10.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in 2023-2024.

The NBA Summer League will take place July 12-22 in Las Vegas. The 6-foot-9, 220-pound athlete will have an uphill battle to make the Timberwolves’ roster, if he impresses in Las Vegas, he could garner a spot on the team’s G-League team in Iowa.

Former Wisconsin forward Tyler Wahl recently worked out with the Utah Jazz, according to KSTP’s Darren Wolfson.

Wahl was one of the several NBA draft-eligible players to work out with the Jazz according to Wolfson, along with Melvin Ajinca, Ulrich Chomche, Tyler Kolek (Marquette) and Ajay Mitchell (UCSB).

The five-year Wisconsin veteran exhausted his final year of eligibility in 2023-24. He is now working to start his professional basketball career and has already had several pre-draft workouts.

Wahl’s decorated Wisconsin career came to an end after 162 appearances — 121 of them starts. His final per-game averages included 26.2 minutes, 8.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals on 47.7% shooting.

His most productive statistical season came in 2021-22 on a Badgers team that won the Big Ten regular season title. He averaged 30.5 minutes, 11.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals on 51% shooting that season as he, Johnny Davis and Chucky Hepburn led one of the best Wisconsin teams over the last decade.

The versatile forward played an integral role in Wisconsin’s success since joining the team in 2019. The Badgers won two Big Ten regular season titles in that span, including the 2021-22 team’s exceptional 25-8 overall record and 15-5 mark in Big Ten play.

He and the Badgers did not carry that play into the postseason. But Wahl was at the center of a lively half-decade of Wisconsin basketball.

The former Badger is not expected to be selected in the upcoming NBA draft. The Jazz have picks No. 10 and 29 in the first round, plus No. 32 overall at the start of the second round. It’s a near impossibility that the Jazz select Wahl with any of those picks. His likely NBA path is via a training camp invite or G-League contract.

Wahl could also follow the long line of successful Wisconsin players to find professional success overseas. Brad Davison, Nigel Hayes, Ethan Happ, Nate Reuvers and Sam Dekker all have found success taking that route.

Former Wisconsin forward Tyler Wahl worked out with the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday, according to a note from the Journal Sentinel’s Jeff Potrykus.

The five-year veteran exhausted his final year of eligibility in 2023-24. He is now working to start his professional basketball career, while also graduating from Wisconsin.

Wahl’s decorated career with the Badgers finished with 162 games played, 1,350 total points, 800 rebounds, 271 assists and 166 steals. His final per-game averages: 26.2 minutes, 8.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals on 47.7% shooting.

The forward played a key role in Wisconsin’s Big Ten regular season titles in 2019-20 and 2021-22. Postseason success did not follow, but he was an integral part of Wisconsin’s on-court success over the last half-decade.

Despite the stellar college career, Wahl is not projected to be selected in the upcoming NBA draft. An overseas career is likely, though workouts like the one with the Bucks could give clarity to what’s possible.

Former Wisconsin Ethan Happ has a similar game to that of Wahl. Happ has played professionally overseas since leaving college in 2019. All indications are Wahl will follow that path.

Wisconsin basketball has been in contact with former South Florida forward Kasean Pryor per On3’s Jamie Shaw.

That number of programs is now up to 25, according to Shaw.

The Chicago, Illinois native has displayed gradual improvement since his freshman and sophomore campaigns at Boise State.

After reaching the hardwood a combined 13 times in his first two seasons in Idaho, Pyror transferred to Northwest Florida State and averaged 14.8 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals in 35 appearances for the Raiders in 2022-2023.  He also shot a respectable 46.2% from the field, 35.2% outside and 79.9% from the charity stripe in 28.1 minutes per game. Pryor elected to transfer to South Florida following his third collegiate year

His 13.0-point, 7.9-rebound marks this past season vaulted him into the No. 47 small forward spot on 247sports transfer rankings.

With the departures of AJ Storr, Chucky Hepburn, Tyler Wahl and Conor Essegian, Wisconsin is certainly in need of a boost in size and versatility. Pryor’s length and veteran savvy could provide a spark for Gard’s squad entering his 10th year manning the sidelines.

Pryor is yet to make any transfer decision.

Wisconsin basketball in heavy pursuit of former four-star recruit

Wisconsin basketball in heavy pursuit of former four-star recruit

Wisconsin basketball is in heavy pursuit of former UMass guard Matt Cross, according to Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68.

Wisconsin is among the programs Cross is hearing the most from at this stage of recruitment along with Iowa, TCU and USC. Cross recently elected to enter the transfer portal on the April 16.

The Beverly, Massachusetts native played his freshman campaign at the University of Miami where he shot 40% from downtown in 14 appearances for the Hurricanes.

After transferring to Louisville for his sophomore season, Cross then landed at UMass for his junior year — where he has been a staple for the past two years. The nation’s former No. 86 recruit in ESPN 100 earned Atlantic 10 First-Team and NABC All-District Selections for a stellar senior performance.

His 15.3-point, 8.3-rebound marks this past season vaulted him into the No. 36 small forward spot on 247sports transfer rankings.

Outside UMass, Cross originally received offers from UConn, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Miami and Tulane following his final year at Brewster Academy. He left high school as 247Sports’ No. 5 prospect in Massachusetts.

With the departures of AJ Storr, Chucky Hepburn, Tyler Wahl and Conor Essegian, Wisconsin is certainly in need of a replacement at power forward. Cross’s length and veteran savvy could bridge that gap.

Cross is yet to make any transfer decision.

Another player with ties to Chucky Hepburn enters transfer portal

Another player with ties to Chucky Hepburn enters portal

The NCAA men’s basketball transfer portal continues to grow and another player with connections to Chucky Hepburn entered his name Tuesday.

That is 6-foot, 7-inch forward Saint Thomas, who announced he’ll look for his next opportunity elsewhere after one season at Northern Colorado. The veteran averaged 19.7 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest with the Bears after spending the first two years of his collegiate career with Loyola-Chicago.

Thomas is a familiar face to Badgers point guard Chucky Hepburn. The two faced each other on occasion while growing up in the state of Nebraska, even meeting at the state tournament.

Thomas not only entered the portal, but also declared for the 2024 NBA draft, potentially bringing his college career to an end.

If he remains at the collegiate level, he could be a possible replacement for Tyler Wahl as the starting power forward for the Badgers next season.

On Greg Gard’s team, starting frontcourt mates Tyler Wahl and Steven Crowl made the list, while Kamari McGee, Isaac Lindsey, Markus Ilver, Isaac Gard and Ross Candelino were also included.

Wahl in particular maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA, joining Owen Lindmark from the Badgers men’s hockey team as the only other athlete to do that with Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Badgers in the running for popular Belmont transfer power forward

Wisconsin Badgers in the running for popular Belmont transfer power forward

As the NCAA men’s basketball transfer portal continues to grow in number of athletes, Wisconsin has reached out to Belmont transfer forward Malik Dia.

Dia announced on March 16 that he is entering the transfer portal while also testing out the NBA waters following his sophomore season with the Bruins. After starting his collegiate career at Vanderbilt, the 6-foot-9 athlete joined Belmont ahead of the 2023-2024 campaign, averaging 16.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

If Dia does ultimately stick around college basketball, he’d potentially present Greg Gard with a direct replacement for graduating senior Tyler Wahl in Wisconsin’s front court in Madison next season.

Former Waukesha West basketball star enters transfer portal

Former Waukesha West star enters transfer portal

The NCAA men’s basketball transfer portal is rather busy, and Davidson forward David Skogman announced his intention to transfer Tuesday.

Skogman is former standout at Waukesha West, and he has one more year of eligibility after spending two seasons with Buffalo and the last two years with the Wildcats.

In 2023-2024, the 6-foot-10 athlete averaged a career-high 13.3 points while grabbing 4.9 rebounds per contest while starting all 17 games that he appeared in.

Skogman had an unofficial visit with Wisconsin in 2019 and with Tyler Wahl graduating, Greg Gard will be looking to replace him in the starting lineup. An experienced option such as Skogman would certainly be worth exploring in the portal.

Wisconsin basketball 2024 signee climbs high school scoring leaderboard

Wisconsin basketball 2024 signee climbs high school scoring leaderboard

Jack Robison, a Wisconsin men’s basketball signee, moved up to third on Lakeville North Basketball’s all-time scoring list following his senior season.

The 247Sports three-star committed to the Badgers’ program on Nov. 11, 2023, after being recruited by head coach Greg Gard and assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft. The 6-foot-6 small forward visited UW five times from October 2021 to October 2023.

The Lakeville, Minnesota native also snagged offers from Minnesota, Nebraska, Northern Iowa and South Florida.

Robison’s high school is notorious for producing future Wisconsin men’s basketball players. Nate Reuvers, a member of the 2019 Big Ten title team, started over 100 games for Greg Gard. Fifth-year player Tyler Wahl and freshman big man Nolan Winter also donned the Panthers’ uniform before collegiate hoops.

Through March 15 of this past season, Robison averaged 21.9 points per game off 52.5% from the field. The future Badger could bolster Wisconsin’s wing next season alongside Max Klesmit and AJ Storr.
