Panthers activate 2 offensive linemen from reserve/COVID-19 list

The Carolina Panthers have activated center Tyler Larsen and guard Michael Schofield from their COVID-19/reserve list.

The Carolina Panthers have activated center Tyler Larsen and guard Michael Schofield from their COVID-19/reserve list. Larsen and Schofield had spent the last several weeks on it, sharing that space with cornerback Rasul Douglas, who was activated on Monday.

This is obviously great news for the players and their health. It also helps the team out in a critical area: depth in the trenches. Both sides of the line of scrimmage have been hit hard by injuries and the pandemic this season.

Larsen has played 60 games in his career and started 18. He’s the primary backup behind starting center Matt Paradis.

This is Schofield’s first year with the Panthers after spending the last few seasons with offensive line coach Pat Meyer and left tackle Russell Okung on the Chargers.

Schofield started the first two games of the year but was replaced at left guard by Chris Reed, who also has spent time on the COVID list. Him and Dennis Daley are now the backup guards behind Reed and John Miller.

Panthers put 2 more players on reserve/COVID-19 list

The Carolina Panthers have placed two more players on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Panthers have placed two more players on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list. They just announced that kicker Joey Slye and offensive tackle Trent Scott are joining the list, which already has guard Michael Schofield and center Tyler Larsen on it.

According to Joe Person at the Athletic, neither player has tested positive for the virus. However, they were in close contact with players who have.

Scott is one of the team’s two backups for starting left tackle Russell Okung, so their depth at that spot takes a hit. Slye being out is obviously more problematic, as Carolina doesn’t have another kicker currently on the roster.

However, the Panthers have already brought in a few potential replacements for visits, hosting three free agent kickers this week.

Panthers place G Michael Schofield on COVID-19/reserve list

Panthers place G Michael Schofield on COVID-19/reserve list.

The first month of the 2020 NFL season was relatively clean when it came to avoiding positive COVID-19 tests. The last few weeks have been a different story, with multiple teams getting multiple positive tests and several games having to be postponed.

The Carolina Panthers have also been touched by the virus. According to Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, guard Michael Schofield has been placed on the COVID-19/reserve list.

Schofield joins backup center Tyler Larsen on the list.

Today and Tuesday the team is working remotely due to a positive test. It’s unclear if it was Schofield’s test that was responsible for the change in the team’s schedule.

Playing games in a bubble is still a great idea to make sure the NFL can finish this season, but as of yet there doesn’t seem to be any plans for one despite the recent increase in cases among players across the league.

Panthers working remotely after unconfirmed positive COVID-19 test.

Normally, the Carolina Panthers would be in the building today breaking down film from Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears.

Instead, everybody has been sent home to work remotely the next couple of days after an unconfirmed positive test for COVID-19.

Coach Matt Rhule is currently conducting his press conference with the media from home via Zoom.

Carolina already has one player on the COVID-19/reserve list. Backup center Tyler Larsen was placed there on Friday.

Panthers put Yetur Gross-Matos on injured reserve, Tyler Larsen on COVID-19 list

The Carolina Panthers will be without two of their linemen for at least the next few weeks.

The Carolina Panthers will be without two of their linemen for at least the next few weeks.

The team just announced that they have placed rookie defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos on the injured reserve list. He suffered an ankle sprain in Sunday’s win over the Falcons and had not been practicing this week. Under the NFL’s new rules, he will be eligible to return to the active roster in three weeks.

Also, the Panthers placed backup offensive lineman Tyler Larsen on the COVID-19/reserve list.

This is rough news on both accounts. Obviously, Larsen’s health is the biggest concern and matters most. He may have contracted the virus from Falcons defensive tackle Marlon Davidson, who tested positive earlier this week. Larsen was only on the field for five snaps, which once again underscores the risks these players are taking this year.

As far as football goes, Carolina’s interior offensive line depth takes a hit. As long as starting center Matt Paradis doesn’t get injured they should be fine, though.

Gross-Matos going on IR is brutal news for a defensive line unit that was just starting to take off. His pressure rate this season is better than some of the league’s elite pass rushers. The team will likely be adding somebody to help make up for his absence. For now, expect Stephen Weatherly to get the majority of what would have been Gross-Matos’ snaps.

Panthers injury updates: Marquis Haynes, Tyler Larsen, Ian Thomas

Several new players did not participate in the portion of practice that was open to the media.

After another unexplained delay, the Carolina Panthers are back at practice today. Here are a few injury updates from the media there.

First, the good news. Backup center Tyler Larsen returned to practice after missing the last week due to a calf injury. Also, defensive end Marquis Haynes is back to wearing a normal-colored jersey, which means he has cleared the concussion protocol.

Now, the bad. Several new players did not participate in the portion of practice that was open to the media. That list of players includes tight end Ian Thomas, guard Chris Reed, starting center Matt Paradis and defensive tackle Zach Kerr. Wide receiver/kick returner Tommylee Lewis was also out again.

There’s no word on what’s wrong with Thomas or any of the other new names here.

Coach Matt Rhule will presumably enlighten reporters on the delay as well as offer some injury info after practice is over.
