OKC Thunder player grades: SGA, Tre Mann highlight 120-108 loss to Heat

The Thunder’s losing streak extends to eight games as SGA & Tre Mann combine for 51 points.

Considering this game was a matchup between a team with the first seed in the Eastern Conference and a team fighting to get the first overall pick, this outcome was the most likely one. The Oklahoma City Thunder’s losing streak extends to eight games as the Miami Heat blow them out, 120-108.

The Thunder were able to keep up for just a quarter as the Heat blew this game open in the middle quarters to make the entirety of the fourth quarter garbage time. The Thunder’s 12-point advantage in the fourth quarter made the final deficit look more respectable, but considering the Heat led by as much as 29 points, don’t let the final score fool you.

For the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Tre Mann were the brightest positives for this game as both scored over 20 points with the latter shooting the ball lights out in the first half off the bench.

For the Heat, it was a well-balanced scoring attack as seven players scored in double figures with sixth man Tyler Herro leading the way at 26 points.

This game was a reminder at just how far apart both of these teams are from each other in the NBA hierarchy. The Thunder have had a pleasant season considering expectations, but the franchise still has a long way to go to which the Heat’s levels. Let’s take a look at player grades.

Jalen Green continues scoring binge as short-handed Rockets fall in Miami

Christian Wood (illness) didn’t play in Miami, but the Rockets kept Monday’s game competitive thanks to another strong night from young guards Kevin Porter Jr. and Jalen Green.

Christian Wood (illness) didn’t play in Miami, but the Rockets kept Monday’s game competitive versus the top team in the Eastern Conference thanks to young guards Kevin Porter Jr. and Jalen Green.

Ultimately, the short-handed Rockets didn’t have enough to win versus the East-leading Heat, as evidenced by the 123-106 final (box score). But there were some promising signs as Houston’s young and rebuilding squad looked to build on Sunday’s stunning home win versus Memphis.

The Rockets trailed by only four points at halftime, but with Houston (16-49) on the second night of a back-to-back in two different cities, the Heat (44-22) gradually pulled away as Monday’s game moved along.

Porter scored a team-high 22 points while making 5-of-11 3-pointers (45.5), while Green added 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting (50.0%) and 4-of-10 on treys (40.0%). For Green, the No. 2 overall pick from a strong 2021 NBA draft, it was his sixth time to score 20+ points in eight games.

Meanwhile, rookie guard Josh Christopher added 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting (54.5%), including 3-of-6 on 3-pointers (50.0%). Fellow first-round rookie Alperen Sengun started in place of Wood (whose illness was not related to COVID-19) and had 13 points and 8 rebounds.

The Heat were led by young guard Tyler Herro, who scored 31 points off the bench on blistering 12-of-18 shooting efficiency (66.7%), including 6-of-9 on 3-pointers (66.7%). Veteran forward Jimmy Butler added 21 points and 7 rebounds for Miami on 7-of-11 shooting (63.6%).

Sixers explain what went wrong with Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro in loss to Heat

The Philadelphia 76ers discuss what went wrong with Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro in a road loss to the Miami Heat.

MIAMI–The Philadelphia 76ers were very shorthanded on Saturday night when they paid a visit to the Miami Heat as they were missing star guard James Harden who is obviously a huge part of what they do.

While the team struggled on the offensive end of the floor, they also had a tough time against Heat stars Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro in a 99-82 loss on the road. Butler and Herro had 21 points each and they both made big shots and big plays for Miami in the second half to hold the Sixers off.

Butler finished with 21 points and five assists while Herro had 21 points and seven rebounds off the bench. They both were getting into the paint and the Sixers had a tough time really stopping them.

“Tyler beat us up, both hands,” said coach Doc Rivers. “Jimmy, when he beats us right, that’s on us. It should never happen and it did in the first half four or five times. In the second half, I thought we did a better job of taking that away. I thought our zone was really effective. It got us back in the game.”

Butler is always a tough cover due to his size and his strength and Herro is one of the quicker guards in the league off the bench. He is an explosive player who can go off at any moment on the offensive end of the floor.

“They’re talented, obviously,” said Tyrese Maxey. “We tried to get Jimmy Butler off his right hand as much as possible even though he’s been in the league for a long time going right. He’s an All-Star for a reason and Tyler’s just playing really well. In the fourth quarter, he hit some tough step-back shots in the corner over multiple people, big-time shots.”

The Sixers did employ the zone defense that Rivers mentioned and that seemed to slow Butler down a bit, but he had seven points in the third quarter when he figured out how to attack it.

“We were playing a lot of zone,” said Joel Embiid. “They’re just pretty good at what they do. They exploited the holes in our defense and they got to the paint and if we were helping, they were creating shots for others.”

One of those other guys was Gabe Vincent who had 16 points and knocked down four triples for Miami. The Sixers had a tough time getting to those guys in the zone.

“We went zone, it worked at times, it didn’t in other times,” Embiid added. “We’re gonna learn from it.”

How to bet Heat-Wizards with Tyler Herro (knee) missing from action

Who needs a Herro? Not Miami. Not against the lowly Washington Wizards.

Tyler Herro has been lighting it up lately for the Miami Heat.

The Sixth Man of the Year candidate (-1205) has 19 points, 24 points and 18 points in his last three games, respectively, and is a major reason why the Heat (34-20) are leading the Eastern Conference.

They just won’t have Herro to rely on against the Washington Wizards on Monday night. Miami (-6.5) announced the shooting guard would miss the contest to rest a knee that’s been ailing him.

No matter, the Heat should be able to make quick work of an imploding Wizards club with or without the Kentucky product. And bettors should be ready to pounce.

Even without Herro, there’s no question the Heat should be able to take care of Washington with ease.

Miami won two of their first three matchups against the Wiz this season with their last meeting on Dec. 28 ending in a 119-112 victory. Washington did earn the win in their previous matchup, 103-100, but before then it was the Heat running away with a 112-97 win in November.

Add the fact the Wiz has lost seven of their last eight games and it doesn’t look too good for the club representing The District.

Lay the points with ease and don’t look back.

If you’re interested in adding some props, however, Max Strus (who is also questionable) over 2.5 threes seems more than attainable if he plays. Same goes for Kyle Kuzma over 8.5 rebounds—the former Laker has been all over the boards when he faces Miami.

Lu Dort scores 20 again, but Thunder fall to Heat for 2nd straight loss

On the day Lu Dort was named one of the nominees for Western Conference Player of the Week, he reached the 20-point mark for the fourth game in a row.

He was the only Thunder player to do so against the Miami Heat, though, and Oklahoma City suffered a 103-90 loss to one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, yet a team that was shorthanded.

The Thunder’s job seemed easier when Miami stars Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler were ruled out pregame. Without those two-way anchors on the court, Oklahoma City may be able to create some more points and find more stops on the other end.

That was not the case. Miami’s defense was stellar, aggressively attacking guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and forcing him into one of his worst games since joining OKC. Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 10 points on 2-for-11 shooting as the Heat hounded him and prevented him from finding any rhythm.

Guard Tyler Herro took on the load for the Heat in the absence of Butler and Adebayo. He scored 26 points, made five 3-pointers, had seven rebounds and six assists, and recorded a plus-28 on the night.

Here are some takeaways from the game, Oklahoma City’s second loss in a row:

NBA weekly awards: Jimmy Butler wins inaugural MVP

HoopsHype chooses major award winners for the week in the NBA world, headlined this week by Jimmy Butler as MVP.

HoopsHype is beginning a new weekly series for the 2021-22 NBA season in which we select the major award winner for every accolade each Monday, all the way from weekly MVP to Most Improved Player to Coach of the Week.

So here goes…

Tyler Herro’s hot start to the season is being noticed by oddsmakers

Detailing Tyler Herro’s recent odds for the sixth man of the year award.

Less than two weeks into the season we’re already seeing some pretty significant odds movement across NBA futures. First listed at +2000 odds to win Sixth Man of the Year at Tipico Sportsbook before the season, Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro has leaped to the front of the leaderboard with +450 odds to nab the award.

Perhaps Herro’s 6MOY campaign was jump-started during the Heat’s five preseason games, where he averaged 22.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists. However, it’s understandable if those few practice games didn’t exactly garner the attention of both bettors and oddsmakers. As it turns out, those preseason games were simply a precursor for what was to follow during the opening few games of the regular season.

Herro’s hot start to the meaningful games can’t be ignored. The third-year guard has turned in 23.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.7 assists off the bench over Miami’s first three games, and has seen his 6MOY odds skyrocket. His current statistics would be career-highs across the board for Herro and would give him some of the best stats of any former winner of the award.

Whether or not Herro can sustain his high odds throughout the season is relatively unknown, but his hot start to the season is encouraging nonetheless. Keep in mind, in nine of the last 10 seasons the award has been given to a guard, and all but one have come from teams that would go on to make the NBA playoffs.

Needless to say, it’s good to see Herro excelling after his sophomore season fell short of the expectations that had been set for him following an impressive rookie season and phenomenal run in the NBA Bubble.

Jalen Green scores 20 on four 3-pointers, but Heat cool off Rockets in exhibition

Rookie Jalen Green showed clear progress in his second preseason game, but the veteran-laden Heat had too much for the young Rockets.

After shooting 0-for-6 from 3-point range in his preseason debut, Houston Rockets rookie Jalen Green was much improved on Thursday versus Miami. The No. 2 overall pick from the 2021 draft scored a team-high 20 points, including 4-of-9 on 3-pointers (44.4%) in 28 minutes.

However, Green’s strong showing wasn’t enough in an exhibition versus one of the NBA’s perennial contenders, as Kyle Lowry, Jimmy Butler, and Bam Adebayo led the veteran-laden Heat to a road victory at Toyota Center, 113-106 (box score). Sharpshooters Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson paced Miami (2-0) with 24 and 20 points, respectively, while Lowry added 10 assists in just 19 minutes. As expected, many of Houston’s young defenders struggled versus established veterans.

For the Rockets, Christian Wood (13 points, 8 rebounds) and Kevin Porter Jr. (12 points, 4 assists) finished second and third in scoring, but they shot just 4-of-10 and 3-of-10 from the field, respectively. Like Green, fellow rookie guard Josh Christopher impressed by scoring 12 points in the second half, helping Houston cut into the final margin.

Eric Gordon (sore left ankle) and Jae’Sean Tate (back tightness) did not participate Thursday, though initial reports suggested that neither injury was particularly concerning. Houston head coach Stephen Silas said that Gordon would have played if it was a regular-season game.

The Rockets (1-1) will continue their four-game exhibition slate on Monday night at Toronto, with tipoff scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Central.

Heat season preview: A chance to prove the bubble was no fluke

HoopsHype discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the 2021-22 Heat, and potential moves they can make plus more in our season preview.

The 2020-21 campaign was one of disappointment and letdown for the Miami Heat, who were not able to capitalize on their run to the 2020 Finals the previous season, instead going from Eastern Conference champions to first-round fodder for the eventual NBA title-winners, the Milwaukee Bucks.

Last year saw Miami pay dearly for its mistake of choosing to make minor roster changes rather than improving its roster ahead of 2020-21, something they did in hopes of keeping enough cap flexibility to make a run at Giannis Antetokounmpo in free agency.

The Heat did not make the same mistake this past offseason, however, and now boast the most tough-nosed roster they’ve had in a very long time, one fit for the culture bred in South Florida.

Below, check out our preview for the 2021-22 Heat campaign.
