Fan Vote: Who should the Falcons start at RB in Week 1?

#Falcons Fan Poll: Who should start at running back for Atlanta in Week 1 against the Panthers?

There’s no doubt the Atlanta Falcons loved what they saw from running back Tyler Allgeier last season, yet the team still felt Texas star Bijan Robinson was too good to pass on with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

Allgeier, a fifth-round pick out of BYU in 2022, finished his rookie season with 1,035 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 4.9 yards per carry. Obviously, the Falcons have big plans for both backs in the future, but how soon will the team give the lead-back role to Robinson?

Last year, Allgeier was inactive during Week 1, however, the team has not held back when it comes to first-round picks Kyle Pitts and Drake London. Who do you think should start at running back for Atlanta in Week 1?

Tyler Allgeier compliments Falcons rookie Bijan Robinson

Tyler Allgeier is excited about “Thunder and Lightning” dynamic with #Falcons rookie Bijan Robinson set to join the backfield

When NFL teams take a best-player-available approach to the draft, sometimes it means adding to a position of strength rather than addressing a need.

The Atlanta Falcons could have gone in any number of directions with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2023 draft, but they chose to add the top running back in the class to one of the league’s top rushing offenses.

Texas star Bijan Robinson was the first running back selected in the top ten since the Giants drafted Saquon Barkley in 2018. But what does Robinson’s presence mean for last year’s leading rusher, Tyler Allgeier?

The former fifth-round pick appears to be embracing Robinson’s arrival. Allgeier told FOX 5 Atlanta’s Kelly Price that he thinks the two can form a  “Thunder and Lightning” dynamic in the Falcons’ backfield.

Allgeier knows better than anyone that there’s enough touches to go around in Arthur Smith’s offense. Despite being inactive for Week 1 of his rookie season, Allgeier still went over 1,000 yards rushing.

We also can’t forget about Cordarrelle Patterson, who deserves a raise for his free-agent recruiting abilities alone. On the field, Patterson’s versatility should help him remain a key part of Atlanta’s offense this season.

The Falcons invested major capital into their offensive line by re-signing Kaleb McGary and extending Chris Lindstrom over the offseason. Plus, the team moved up to select offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron in the second round of the draft.

While it’s clear Atlanta is planning to run the ball down its opponents’ throats, it will be interesting to see how the touches will be distributed in the team’s crowded backfield this season.

In the meantime, Robinson was spotted with Adele at the Lakers game over the weekend. Not bad for a rookie!

Falcons’ Chris Lindstrom, Tyler Allgeier recognized by PFWA

#Falcons RB Tyler Allgeier was named to PFWA’s All-Rookie Team and OL Chris Lindstrom made the All-NFC Team

The awards keep rolling in for Falcons guard Chris Lindstrom as the former first-round pick was voted onto the Professional Football Writers of America‘s 2022 All-NFC team.

Lindstrom was also selected for the Pro Bowl and named to the AP All-Pro second team for his stellar 2022 campaign.

The fourth-year lineman is entering the final year of his rookie contract and the team could look to sign him to a long-term extension this offseason. Lindstrom wasn’t the only Falcons player recognized by the PFWA, though.

Rookie running back Tyler Allgeier was named to the PFWA’s All-Rookie team, along with Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker.

Allgeier rushed for 1,035 yards on 4.9 yards per carry with three touchdowns this season. The former BYU star broke the team’s rookie rushing record and appears to be the future at the running back position. This is even more impressive when you consider Allgeier was a healthy scratch for Week 1.

While the jury is still out on the team’s 2022 NFL draft class, Allgeier has proven to be an absolute steal as a fifth-round draft pick.

Drake London, Tyler Allgeier named to PFF’s All-Rookie Team

#Falcons WR Drake London, RB Tyler Allgeier named to Pro Football Focus’ 2022 All-Rookie Team

It takes more than a year to accurately judge an NFL draft class, but the early returns on the Atlanta Falcons’ latest crop of rookies have been encouraging to say the least.

First-round pick Drake London and fifth-round pick Tyler Allgeier each broke rookie records this season. London set a new record for catches in a season (72), while Allgeier set a new rookie rushing record (1,035 yards) in 2022.

Pro Football Focus released its 2022 NFL All-Rookie Team and both London and Allgeier made the cut. Check out what PFF’s Michael Renner had to say about London’s rookie campaign.

“London looks like another perfect fit for Arthur Smith’s offense,” writes Renner. “He made a ton of tough catches, going 14-of-26 (53.3%) in contested situations this season. He finished with 72 catches for 866 yards and showed a rapport with QB Desmond Ridder late in the season, posting a career-high 120 yards in Week 18.”

The success of this year’s class of wide receivers makes London’s inclusion all the more impressive. As for Allgeier, his strong finish to the season earned him the nod over Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III.

“Kenneth Walker III ran for more yards and Dameon Pierce broke more tackles, but Allgeier ran away with it from a grading perspective,” writes Renner. “He was efficient when called upon, averaging 4.9 yards per carry, while his 3.58 yards after contact per carry ranked seventh among 60 qualifying running backs over the regular season. He’s a perfect fit for Arthur Smith’s run game.”

The Falcons have some other talented rookies, but aside from quarterback Desmond Ridder, none of them earned starting roles this season.

Outside linebacker Arnold Ebiketie flashed his immense talent at times, and he would likely replace Ade Ogundeji or Lorenzo Carter next year, depending on what happens over the offseason.

Make sure to cast your vote in our Falcons end-of-the-season fan poll and hand out grades to Arthur Smith, Terry Fontenot and each position group.

Falcons RB Tyler Allgeier goes over 1,000 rushing yards for season

#Falcons rookie RB Tyler Allgeier has now rushed for over 1,000 yards this season

Coming into Week 18, Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier needed 100 yards to surpass the 1,000-yard rushing milestone, and the rookie came through.

Allgeier went over the 100-yard mark in the third quarter and is now the second rookie in franchise history to go over 1,000 rushing yards. The first player to hit this milestone was William Andrews, who set the record (1,023 rushing yards) during his rookie season in 1979.

The fifth-round pick out of BYU has a powerful running style that fits head coach Arthur Smith’s system. Allgeier is clearly the Falcons’ running back of the future, and is worthy of Rookie of the Year consideration in the NFC.

Falcons RB Tyler Allgeier needs 100 rushing yards vs. Bucs to hit 1K

#Falcons rookie RB Tyler Allgeier needs 100 rushing yards vs. the Bucs to top 1,000 for the season

In Week 17, Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier went over 1,000 all-purpose yards for the season, and the rookie has a chance to hit another milestone during Sunday’s finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Allgeier, a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, has exactly 900 rushing yards heading into Week 18. With a 100-yard game on Sunday, Allgeier would be the second rookie in Falcons history to top the 1,000-yard rushing mark.

William Andrews set the franchise record of 1,023 rushing yards during his rookie season in 1979. In order to surpass Andrews, Allgeier needs 124 rushing yards against a Buccaneers defense that allows 117.4 per game.

While the former BYU star certainly deserves credit for his breakout season, Atlanta’s offensive line has been the heart of the team in 2022. Left tackle Jake Matthews, right guard Chris Lindstrom and right tackle Kaleb McGary have led the way.

McGary will be a free agent this offseason after the team declined his fifth-year option in 2022.

It takes a few years to accurately judge a team’s draft class, but the Atlanta Falcons nailed their fifth-round pick in 2022. Former BYU running back Tyler Allgeier has been everything fans hoped he would be, and more this season.

The rookie added another notch to his belt during Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. After rushing for a touchdown to give the Falcons an early lead, Allgeier topped 1,000 all-purpose yards for the season in the third quarter against the Cardinals.

Currently, Allgeier has 862 rushing yards and and 139 receiving yards (1,001 total) this season.

It’s now the second year in a row that a Falcons rookie has topped the 1,000-yard mark. Tight end Kyle Pitts went over 1,000 receiving yards in 2021.

The Falcons currently trail 16-14 to the Cardinals in the third quarter.
