Ravens playoff scenario: How Baltimore can clinch in Week 15

Baltimore Ravens can clinch a playoff berth 9 different ways in Week 15 of NFL action

The Ravens are 10-3, looking like a Super Bowl hopeful and among the four teams that can clinch postseason berths in Week 15.

Baltimore visits the Jacksonville Jaguars (8-5) on Sunday night in what could be a potential playoff preview.

Jacksonville will look to rebound after suffering their second loss in six days, as quarterback Trevor Lawrence finished 28 of 50 for 257 yards and three interceptions.

The Jaguars are trying to hold off Houston and Indianapolis in the AFC South.

With preparation for the matchup underway, here are nine scenarios in which the Ravens can clinch.

Ravens’ WR Tylan Wallace wins AFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Baltimore Ravens’ wide receiver Tylan Wallace wins AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his walkoff punt return in win over the Rams

A Tylan Wallace penalty in regulation nearly cost Baltimore a win over the Rams, but the wide receiver repaid his team with a thrilling 76-yard punt return for the win in Overtime.

After the Rams were forced to punt, Wallace put things away, sprinting up the left sideline to give the Ravens their tenth win.

That heroic play has earned Wallace AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for Week 14.

It was just the fourth overtime punt return touchdown in NFL history and kept the 10-3 Ravens atop the AFC playoff standings.

Mics caught just how floored Ravens LB Patrick Queen was over Tylan Wallace’s game-winning punt return TD

Patrick Queen was all of us watching that magical Ravens’ punt return TD.

The more this NFL season wears on, the more it becomes abundantly clear that the Baltimore Ravens might be a team of destiny. After all their injuries — including but not limited to Mark Andrews, J.K. Dobbins, and Devin Duvernay — this Baltimore squad continues to find ways to win anyway. As a result, the Ravens could soon clinch the AFC’s top playoff seed.

Sunday was a perfect example of the Ravens somehow finding another hero despite the most unlikely circumstances.

While deadlocked in an epic battle with the Los Angeles Rams in overtime, Tylan Wallace took back a monster punt return for a touchdown in the walk-off 37-31 win. And when mic’d-up Ravens linebacker Patrick Queen saw Wallace breaking a few tackles and finding open space, he was positively stunned.

All Queen could say was, “Oh my god.” He’s just like us!

There’s still a long way to go before the Ravens can put themselves in the best possible position for a Super Bowl push. But magical moments like this Wallace touchdown make that reality seem inevitable — even if his own teammates like Queen probably won’t see them coming.

Sean McVay more concerned with 6 missed tackles than missed penalty on Ravens’ punt return

Sean McVay isn’t wasting energy on a potential missed penalty during the Ravens’ game-winning TD. He’s focused on the 6 missed tackles.

The Los Angeles Rams lost to the Baltimore Ravens in stunning fashion on Sunday, allowing a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown in overtime. It was the latest example of the Rams’ special teams struggles, failing to get Tylan Wallace on the ground despite having multiple opportunities to tackle the speedy return man.

While the Rams have no one to blame but themselves, some fans are pointing their fingers at the officials for missing an apparent block in the back by the Ravens. It happened early in the return and while it very easily could’ve been a penalty to negate the touchdown, Sean McVay isn’t wasting any of his energy on any potential fouls by Baltimore on the play.

“No,” McVay told J.B. Long on the “Coach McVay Show” when asked if it’s worth his time to look for a flag on the play. “I mean, I think you look to be able to create clarity in terms of, what are the things these guys are looking at how it’s being officiated? It’d drive you crazy because you think you understand exactly what should be called, and it wasn’t. There’s going to be things like that that sometimes benefit us and sometimes don’t. Our job is to try to take out the margin for error for imperfect situations.”

Instead of focusing on what could have been with regards to any potential penalties on the play, McVay is more worried about the Rams’ six missed tackles and a poor directional punt by Ethan Evans.

“There was a lot of opportunities to be able to make the play on that given punt return that wasn’t just exclusive to the block in the back,” he continued. “We had six missed tackles on that play, we didn’t get the location where we wanted. We’ll learn from it, we’ll move on. I could sit here and be upset about it but it is wasted energy.”

Special teams has been a problem for the Rams all season and the poor coverage on Baltimore’s game-winning touchdown was just another example of that. It’s something the Rams must improve, from the kicking operation to punt coverage to their own return game.

Look: Officials appeared to miss a block in the back on Ravens’ game-winning TD

The Ravens appeared to commit a block in the back penalty on their game-winning touchdown, but officials missed it

The Los Angeles Rams only have themselves to blame for their heartbreaking overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens after missing multiple tackles on Tylan Wallace’s game-winning touchdown, but the officials also had a bad miss on that play.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports shared a video of Wallace’s return and there appears to be a clear block in the back committed by the Ravens. There’s no way to know for sure if the Rams player would’ve made the tackle, had he not been shoved in the back, but the penalty would’ve negated the Ravens’ touchdown.

Again, the Rams had opportunities to make the tackle on Wallace, but the officials missed a crucial penalty in the biggest moment.

This isn’t the only play Rams fans will have a gripe with. Aaron Donald seemed to be getting held throughout the game, yet Baltimore wasn’t flagged for holding once. Again, the officials aren’t to blame for the Rams’ loss, but they certainly didn’t help Los Angeles’ cause.

Lamar Jackson compared Tylan Wallace’s walk-off punt-return TD to an epic film

If the Ravens’ game-winning TD was a movie, then the Rams HATED the ending.

Sunday’s clash between the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Rams will almost certainly be a prime Game of the Year candidate.

In a topsy-turvy affair showcasing one of the NFC’s hottest teams (L.A.) and the AFC’s current No. 1 seed (Baltimore), we were rewarded with an epic battle that featured nine different lead changes, including four in the fourth quarter and overtime. In the end, though, the Ravens prevailed 37-31.

And not on the strength of Lamar Jackson pulling off some absurd wizardry or the team’s dynamite defense. No, no. Baltimore became the first AFC team to reach the 10-win plateau thanks to an electric walk-off punt return touchdown from Tylan Wallace.

Hoo, buddy. What more do I need to say?

After the win, Jackson was asked to talk up his young teammate’s game-winning play. He ended up comparing Wallace’s moves to find the open field and create a crease to the highest form of cinema. For what it’s worth after learning this was one of the rare walk-off punt return touchdowns in NFL history, I find it hard to disagree:

The Ravens are now 10-3. They are firmly in the driver’s seat for the AFC’s top seed and the only bye week in the conference’s playoff picture. That is only possible thanks to role players like Wallace finding a way to change the game at the best possible times.

Tylan Wallace’s spectacular punt return for TD lifts Ravens over Rams in OT

Tylan Wallace gives the Ravens an OT victory with a great punt return for a TD

Tylan Wallace was the Baltimore Ravens’ backup punt returner. Pressed into action because Devin Duvernay is injured, he made a case for the job.

Wallace took an Ethan Evans punt in overtime Sunday and didn’t stop until he dove into the end zone, giving the Ravens a 37-31 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

The return covered 76 yards and came with 7:42 left in the extra session.

Numerous Rams players had a chance to take down Wallace but everyone failed.

The former wideout from Oklahoma State had three returns for 95 yards after Duvernay was injured.

The touchdown concluded a wild game in the rain that saw both teams score late with the Rams getting a field goal with 7 seconds left to force overtime.
