In absence of Zay Flowers, Isaiah Likely and Rashod Bateman step up

When your top receiver (Zay Flowers) is sidelined, you need role players (like Isaiah Likely, Rashod Bateman etc.) to step up

Once in a while, a new popular expression seems to come out of nowhere, and then, almost overnight, it’s excessively overused. Right now, we’re in that stage with “deserves his flowers” or “should get his flowers.”

And given how well the Baltimore Ravens offense performed tonight in a dominant Wild Card round victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, they deserve their flowers without their top wide receiver (you know his name).

They may get WR1 Zay Flowers back from injury next week in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs. We’ll have to wait and see what develops regarding his knee sprain recovery during the week.

However, the Ravens offense performed just fine without Flowers on Saturday, racking up over 300 yards of total offense and a 21-0 lead by halftime.

They ended up winning 28-14, although the final score does not tell the game’s true story as much as the 464-280 yardage disparity did.

With Flowers out, seven players caught a pass, with quarterback Lamar Jackson spreading the love around.

At least for the night, Rashod Bateman was the new WR1, and he opened the game’s scoring with a 19-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Counting this game, the Ravens are now 9-0 this season in games where Bateman scores.

Isaiah Likely, who started his season on the right foot with a big game in the season opener at Kansas City, also positively began the postseason.

Tonight, he led the Ravens in receiving yards with 53.

Justice Hill, who had been regarded by some as an injury doubt for this game, caught Jackson’s other touchdown pass. With six carries and four receptions, he had 10 total touches.

And the seldomly used Nelson Agholor and Tylan Wallace each played 20+ yards tonight.

Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry get the headlines, and very much deservedly so, but it takes a whole team to win decisively like this. And when your top receiver is sidelined, you need role players to fill the void.

The journey isn’t complete, but the Ravens avoided embarrassment and moved onto the AFC Divisional Round of the playoffs with a convincing 28-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers at M&T Bank Stadium on Saturday night.

TV broadcast calls out Donte Jackson for lack of effort

Donte Jackson showed some real lack of effort and got caught by the TV broadcast team.

When you are getting blown out, the television broadcast has to do something to keep things moving. For Al Michaels and Kirk Hirbstreit, they are being forced to watch the Baltimore Ravens blow out the Pittsburgh Steelers and Herbstreit isn’t holding back on the lack of effort by the Steelers defense.

In the first half, Herbstreit wondered where the Steelers fire was and then in the second half, called out cornerback Donte Jackson for his lack of effort helping to make a tackle.

Ravens receiver Tylan Wallace made a catch near the sidelines and on the replay, it is easy to see Jackson just stand and watch while safety Minkah Fitzpatrick works by himself to wrestle Wallace down. Herbstreit saw it as well and pointed out the lack of effort this group has been seeing for a long time.

Sights and sounds from first half as Ravens hold a 21-0 lead over Steelers in AFC Wild Card game

Like a Samantha Pollino Broadway Performance, the Ravens were flawless in the first half and looked like a Super Bowl favorite, jumping out to an early 14-0 lead.

After holding Pittsburgh to a three and out, Baltimore navigated a 13-play, 95-yard drive that ate almost 8 minutes of clock to put the Ravens on the board, 7-0. The Ravens dominated offensively and ended the first half with a 21-0 lead.

Here are sights and sounds from the first half.

Ravens WR Diontae Johnson wants to complain so let Tylan Wallace work

While Baltimore Ravens WR Diontae Johnson act unseemly, WR Tylan Wallace has already proven himself to be an asset on offense.

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Diontae Johnson might think he’s cooler than the other side of the pillow, but the team won’t lose sleep in his absence.

Instead, the Ravens should be focused on developing rookie wide receiver Devontez Walker and playing reserve Tylan Wallace more frequently.

Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken has had both Walker and Wallace operating in reps with the starters, yet Walker hasn’t played much throughout the season. Could that change in the upcoming weeks?

Wallace had a big play against the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 7 and may be an adequate target for quarterback Lamar Jackson on underneath throws. Walker, on the other hand, is more sizable and may work to take the top of the defense off on vertical route concepts.

Johnson was never needed, yet the Ravens have become too idealistic in their approach, assuming that Johnson was humble enough to be moderately used. Instead, Johnson’s gesture indicates that he might not have been the player the Ravens needed when they acquired him.

Hopefully, the Ravens will return to using 12 and 21 personnel packages more frequently on offense. Instead of saturating the field with three wide receiver sets, Monken should focus on using tight-ends Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely, coupling them with two wide receiver sets that will force defenses to play more man coverage.

Ultimately, Walker and Wallace have just as much talent as Johnson, and it’s time for the Ravens’ coaching staff to get out of their way.

Ravens fall to 7-4 as offense sputters in 18-16 loss to Steelers in Week 11

Lamar Jackson will have to wait a few weeks to get that much-needed win over the Steelers after the Ravens sputtered in neutral for most of the afternoon in an 18-16 loss to Pittsburgh at Acrisure Stadium.

The NFL’s No. 1 ranked quarterback in QBR, Jackson was 16-33 passing for 207 yards (6.3 avg), one touchdown, one interception, and a 66.1 rating, the lowest of this season.

Jackson had four carries for 46 yards, while Derrick Henry was held to 65 yards (5.0 avg) on 13 carries and one rushing touchdown, tying the single-season franchise record for touchdowns.

Zach Orr’s maligned defense held Pittsburgh to 4-16 on third downs and 303 total yards, but Pittsburgh held the football for 36:22, compared to Baltimore’s 23:38.

The Steelers held the Ravens ‘ top-ranked offense to 329 yards and just 124 yards rushing. Justin Tucker’s two missed field goals will further magnify the two-point loss. On the day, Tucker was 1-3 on field goal attempts, while Steelers kicker Chris Boswell was a perfect 6-6, including a 57-yard field goal.

Baltimore will quickly regroup before a massive Monday night matchup against Jim Harbaugh and the 6-3 Los Angeles Chargers.
